Cultural and Literary study of Āmra (Mango) as Depicted in Sanskrit Literature

Abstract

Āmra is one of the most admired trees of India. Known as evergreen tree it has divine origin according to Sanskrit Literature. Hence, it is extremely venerated in Indian tradition. Though Ṛgveda has no reference of this tree, later Vedic Literature and Classical Sanskrit Literature find mention of this tree. Though this tree is well known for its cultural and medicinal importance, prime focus here shall be on its cultural significance. The article comes forth with mention of Āmra in various Sanskrit texts, its origin, religious and ritualistic importance. How this tree and its various parts has enriched Sanskrit Literature has also been described in this article.
