Abstract

Zack Snyder is a popular and well-known film director, having most recently worked on the "Justice League" film for DC. The announcement of his new project - which he has termed as "faithful retelling" of the Arthurian myth - has already garnered interest from comic, movie, and game websites and is developing buzz on Twitter and other social media outlets. I propose to use Snyder's announcement to examine the difficulties that arise when we attempt to "faithfully" retell a mythos that has developed over several centuries (and several cultures). The Arthurian story has, from its origins, been a malleable mythos and part of its enduring appeal is the way it can be re-envisioned to suit political, national and cultural purposes. Thus Snyder's attempt to create a "faithful retelling" is, at its heart, an impossible task given that Arthurian scholars recognise that no such thing really exists.
