The Conversation UK: There's no such thing as a 'faithful retelling' of Arthurian legend.

Zack Snyder is a popular and well-known film director, having most recently worked on the "Justice League" film for DC. The announcement of his new project - which he has termed as "faithful retelling" of the Arthurian myth - has already garnered interest from comic, movie, and game websites and is developing buzz on Twitter and other social media outlets. I propose to use Snyder's announcement to examine the difficulties that arise when we attempt to "faithfully" retell a mythos that has developed over several centuries (and several cultures). The Arthurian story has, from its origins, been a malleable mythos and part of its enduring appeal is the way it can be re-envisioned to suit political, national and cultural purposes. Thus Snyder's attempt to create a "faithful retelling" is, at its heart, an impossible task given that Arthurian scholars recognise that no such thing really exists. [Show full abstract] colonization, it becomes clear that earlier Orientalist attitudes are still potent in representing certain populations as inferior to and of lesser value than their Western counterparts. This essay will examine Arundahati Roy’s portrayal of media discourse in The Ministry of Utmost Happiness (2017) in the light of Edward Said’s ideas of Orientalism and Judith Butler’s notions of the frames of recognition used in media discourse to show that certain lives are considered more valuable and grievable than others. This essay will also demonstrate how media representation can be placed within the framework of global capitalism with images and stories being circulated according to market demands of global media consumption. Maintaining that Roy’s attitude to media narratives in her novel is ambivalent and complex, this essay will argue that her representation of these media narratives within the larger frame of the novel is a subversive act that makes transparent the assumptions underlying media discourse and power. This research expanded on prior work exploring the relationship between social media use, social support, and mental health by including the usage of social virtual reality (VR). In Study 1 (undergraduate students; n = 448) we examined divergent relationships between problematic social media use (e.g., Facebook, TikTok), total use, and users’ mental health indicators (e.g., depression, anxiety, ... To determine whether problematic social media use patterns extended to immersive 3-D environments, we sampled active social VR users (e.g., Rec Room) in Study 2 (n = 464). Problematic social VR use was related to decreased real-life social support (β = -.62, 95%CI [-.80, -.44]), but not to VR social support (β = -.06, 95%CI [-.25, .14]). Conversely, the amount of social VR use was only related to increased social VR (β = .06, 95%CI [.04, .15]) but not to real-life social support (β = -.02, 95%CI [-.05, .04]). Study 2 also revealed a finding that may be unique to the 3-D immersive environment: the amount of social VR use facilitated better mental health for VR users, but only through stronger perceived social support on social VR but not in real life. This result highlights the potential of immersive media to promote mental well-being by facilitating engaging and meaningful social interactions.

Social Media Use and Critical Thinking Skills among Senior High School Learners: A Quantitative Corr...

This study explored the relationship between social media use and critical thinking skills among Senior High School (SHS) learners in the Davao region. A quantitative correlational research design utilized survey data from a sample of SHS students. First, this study assessed the level of social media use among students, with the majority engaged with social media for more than two hours daily, ... [Show full abstract] mainly for social interaction and entertainment, with limited use for educational purposes. The study then measured students’ critical thinking abilities, which revealed a moderate level of critical thinking across the sample, with some students performing better on higher-order thinking tasks. A significant positive correlation (r = 0.45, p < 0.01) was found between social media use for academic purposes and critical thinking. It suggests that educationally focused social media activities may enhance critical thinking skills. Further analysis identified that the frequency of participation in academic discussions on social media (β = 0.35, p < 0.01) was a significant predictor of critical thinking abilities. However, passive social media use showed no significant impact. These findings imply that while social media can foster critical thinking, its impact largely depends on how it is used. The study emphasizes the importance of promoting purposeful academic engagement with social media to improve cognitive skills among SHS learners.
