Abstract and Figures

The objective of this article is to know and evaluate the impacts that can improve or affect the host community, as well as identify areas of opportunity in terms of managing the tourist destination. To achieve the above, the methodology proposed by Doxey was applied, specifically by measuring it through the Irridex index, seeking to avoid residents having friction towards tourists in the future. It is concluded that by assessing the perception of residents, it can generate knowledge, as in the insular destination of Cozumel, locating the stage in which the population is located, which could help in the generation of public policies.

Objective: The purpose of this study is to analyze the extent to which residents' perceptions of the impacts of tourism —economic, cultural, social, political-administrative and environmental— significantly influence their support for tourism development, either directly or mediated by perceived quality of life, taking the case of Puerto Peñasco, Sonora, as a reference. Theoretical framework: The research is based on Social Exchange Theory (SET), Self-Perception Theory (SPT) and the concept of social carrying capacity, which explain how the effects of tourism shape community attitudes towards this activity. Method: A cross-sectional quantitative study was carried out with a sample of 331 residents, applying a structured survey of 35 items on a 5-point Likert scale, adapted by the authors to local circumstances. The data was analyzed using Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) and Confirmatory Factor Analysis (CFA). Results and discussion: The findings reveal strong support for tourism development, with a preference for sports and gastronomic tourism. However, only political-administrative impacts significantly predict such support (β = 0.78), while the other dimensions have marginal or no effects. The perceived quality of life did not show a mediating role between impacts and support. Implications of the research: The results emphasize the importance of governance, trust in institutions and participatory planning as key factors in fostering a positive attitude towards tourism. Originality/value: This study contributes to empirical knowledge about little-explored tourist destinations, showing that institutional aspects have a greater weight than perceived well-being in the configuration of citizen support for tourism.

Purpose Specifically, this study aims to examine residents’ perceptions regarding the following: the sociocultural, environmental and economic impacts generated by the presence of Airbnb and the irritability caused by the presence of Airbnb based on Doxey’s Doxey (1975) irritation index (i.e. index). Design/methodology/approach Twenty-one semistructured in-depth interviews were conducted between February and March 2021 with residents of three condominiums in the Huancaro residential complex. Data were analyzed using the qualitative data analysis software ATLAS.ti 8. Findings Results showed that participants perceived negative economic impacts regarding investments, jobs, real estate prices and overall cost of living; negative sociocultural impacts regarding criminality, social conflicts and cultural exchange; and negative environmental impacts regarding sanitation in the context of the pandemic and the state of the Airbnb apartments. Further, it was found that participants related to the following three of the four stages of irritability: euphoria, apathy and annoyance. Research limitations/implications It is necessary to complement the information with the perceptions of the residents about the city’s authorities and managers in the hotel business before the stage of the COVID-19 pandemic and the current stage. Practical implications The study identifies improve Airbnb operations like establishing health paraments and defining cohabitation rules at the condominiums. Social implications The residents consider that visitors’ returns produce positive and negative impacts on the quality of life being important for understanding their perceptions. Originality/value Short-term rental companies, such as Airbnb, generate a range of impacts on urban residents, particularly when travelers encroach on areas of the city beyond the traditional “tourist bubbles.” This study explored the perceptions of Airbnb’s impacts on activities among residents of Huancaro, a residential section of Cusco-Peru, in the context of tourism reopening after a year of an almost complete halt in tourism activities because of the COVID-19 pandemic. The study also highlighted the heterogenetic responses to Airbnb within the community.

This paper presents findings from a study that was undertaken to investigate residents’ attitudes toward the impacts of tourism in Langkawi Island, Malaysia. In order to gain reliable results for the use of Langkawi policy makers and tourism planners, a standardized instrument for measuring residents’ attitude was developed and used in the study. The findings revealed that residents tend to perceive impacts that benefit them as positive impacts of tourism. The findings also indicated that residents tend to perceive impacts of tourism, either positively or negatively depending on how much they would affect their personal lives. The more dependent they were on the positive impacts of tourism, the more supportive they were toward tourism development. Thus, the findings do not support Doxey’s Irridex Model. Finally, the study suggested that for a long-term purpose of achieving sustainable tourism development, Langkawi tourism planners and policy makers should conduct several campaigns and tourism workshops for the residents. Accordingly, this would gain residents support for tourism development on the island.

The rapid development of tourism worldwide is giving rise to many anxieties about the actual as well as potentially negative consequences of tourism on host societies. However, despite such concerns, much of the academic research on tourism remains grounded in economic analysis with far less attention being paid to assessing the socio-cultural impacts of tourism, whether real or perceived. The neglect in this regard is particularly acute when it comes to research on the rapidly expanding tourism industry in the United Arab Emirates. This paper addresses this research gap by way of examining resident perceptions of tourism in the City of Dubai. In particular, this study, which was based on responses gathered from over 400 Emirati citizens, explores local attitudes to further tourism growth as well as resident perceptions of the cultural, economic, and behavioural similarities and differences of tourists and themselves. The general findings are then situated within a conceptual framework (Irridex model) designed to show the varying levels of tolerance of a host population to changes in tourist numbers.

A survey of Rhode Island households, businesses and town officials was conducted in 1982 in order to pravide background information for the first Governor's Conference on Tourism held in the state. The three objectives of the survey were to identify specific benefits and problems associated with tourism growth, to measure differences in attitudes held by the three groups sampled, and to identify regional differences in attitudes within the state. In order to accomplish the second and third objectives, a tourism attitude scale was developed.

The authors of this article give an explanation of how Cozumel became a touristic cruisers place from the reconstruction of the modern economy history in the island. It was necessary more than a century and a half to transform the town founded in that island, San Miguel de Cozumel (1848), into a cosmopolitan city and the most important touristic cruisers place in the country. Cozumel was an insignificant national property, almost abandoned. Their settlers from XIX century saw how the progress passed them by because the merchant ships and the passenger ships never stopped in the island, unless a hurricane, a mechanic problem or the need of fresh water forced them. During the Vireinal time until the beginning of XX century, Cozumel was only the interest of the maritime cartography, Its 45 klometres of extension were a very good reference to the ships that sailed the Caribbean sea route, but that very same condition transformed it into a cruisers port.

It has long been recognised that it is incumbent on those responsible for the planning of tourism to seek to optimise the well-being of local residents whilst minimising the costs of tourism development. It is not surprising, therefore, that academic attention has long been paid to the social impacts of tourism in general and to the understanding of host communities' perceptions of tourism and its impacts in particular. Nevertheless, despite the significant volume and increasing scope of the research, the extent to which understanding of residents' perceptions of tourism has been enhanced remains uncertain. Thus, the purpose of this Progress Review is to explore critically the development of the research into residents' perceptions of tourism. Highlighting key themes and trends in the literature, it identifies a number of limitations in the research, including a narrow case study base, a dependence on quantitative methods, a focus on perceptions as opposed to responses, and the exclusion of the tourist from the majority of the research. Consequently, it argues for a multidimensional approach to the research.

This research note suggests a method of measuring residents' attachment levels to distinguish between recent and long-established "native"residents'perceptionsoftourism impacts on the community. Guttman scaling is used to determine whether birthplace, years of residence, and heritage measure residents' attachment levels in a community.
