Gaming in Portugal 2020: Women in Digital Games and the Impact of COVID-19

Abstract

This chapter shows some results of an arts-based qualitative research. It aims to identify the immediate effects of COVID-19 for women employed in the Portuguese digital games industry. We identify changes in their routines during and after the lockdown in Portugal. Between September and October 2020, nine Portuguese women who had employment contracts with companies in the digital games industry were interviewed. The three main changes reported by them were: i. replacement of travel time by work/leisure-related activities (playing games and volunteering activities); ii. saving time and money by no longer having to travel from home to work; iii. changes in spatial reorganization of the household, as all family members were also forced to stay at home. Further research is needed to explore the advantages of gender equity in a context where the digital transition, accelerated by the COVID-19 pandemic, affects society in a complex way. https://www.cambridgescholars.com/product/978-1-5275-9108-0/

This chapter presents experiences in using gaming and interactive media in higher education environments since 2017 culminating in the 2020/21 years when the COVID-19 pandemic forced teachers and students to adopt different work methodologies. Participatory design strategies merged with a tradition of critical and interdisciplinary studies in humanities mediated by online technologies helped shape these strategies enhanced by the cooperation from three different faculties from Lisbon University in Portugal (Universidade de Lisboa, UL), namely FBAUL, IST, and IGOT. The aim of these experiments was to augment the potential for innovation and research taking advantage of gaming research methodologies to involve teachers and students in a common context. This chapter also shows research done in interactive media, augmented and virtual reality, game art, and gender equity. The year 2020 showed how institutional collaboration can open learning spaces to a more focused approach on the interests of young people and to promote a more sustainable and dynamic future.

/ The lack of clear crediting standards is a constant concern in the computer and video game industry. On an academic level, this concern has a regrettable parallel: of all the hundreds of thousands of professional culture creators in the media world, the ones whose lives are studied the least are game developers. Our paper maps the key issues which inform and influence the working lives and professional identities of professionals in the global computer and videogame industry. In our analysis of gamework as an example of the production of culture, we synthesize interviews with game developers, scholarly and trade publications, game developers' weblogs and online forum postings, as well as informal discussions and exchanges with people inside the industry.

This chapter will provide an overview and analysis of the literature on gender and computer/video game participation and experience. Research on gender and game play will be explored as studied from the early 1980s to the present time, when concepts of intersectionality (or the study of gender with intersecting constructs like ethnicity and sexuality) have started to be explored. Gender research in video and computer game participation have spanned topic areas including spatial performance, violence, representation, design, education, career development and psychological adjustment. The chapter discusses the dominant research areas, epistemological stances and methodologies employed, as well as explores considerations from similar research areas, like sports and gender. The chapter further discusses how gender has been studied in general in the social sciences over time. Finally, the researcher will cite future directions for research on gender and computer game participation and experience, particularly in the pursuit of gender-equitable experiences and games.

This chapter uses an arts- and design-based research methodology to explore emergent possibilities in contemporary transmedia arts and design practices. Focusing in narrative and fiction creation for the development of participatory and performative events with emphasis in audience or community engagement and conveying inspiration from modernist and postmodernist movements, it reveals the role of participation design in connected and smart experiences for urban cooperative gaming and play. Mobile gaming and play technologies taking advantage of sensors and data tracking devices immerse us in a persistent and pervasive game of life which blur the boundaries between the real and the fictional world.

This chapter explores the legacy of both modernism and postmodernism in contemporary arts and how it helped shape our current environments and practices in transmedia contemporary arts. It also explores popular modernism aesthetics based simultaneously in cathartic narrative and flow participatory interaction to explore new media discourse about the role of digital arts and artists. The aim is to promote an understanding of the current arts practices that no longer promotes the artificial divide between new media or media arts and contemporary arts. Changes in the intercultural museum and in higher education can no longer sustain this segregation, which is a product of old and new media specificity and narrow notions of specialization.

Video games have long been seen as the exclusive territory of young, heterosexual white males. In a media landscape dominated by such gamers, players who do not fit this mold, including women, people of color, and LGBT people, are often brutalized in forums and in public channels in online play. Discussion of representation of such groups in games has frequently been limited and cursory. In contrast, Gaming at the Edge builds on feminist, queer, and postcolonial theories of identity and draws on qualitative audience research methods to make sense of how representation comes to matter. In Gaming at the Edge, Adrienne Shaw argues that video game players experience race, gender, and sexuality concurrently. She asks: How do players identify with characters? How do they separate identification and interactivity? What is the role of fantasy in representation? What is the importance of understanding market logic? In addressing these questions Shaw reveals how representation comes to matter to participants and offers a perceptive consideration of the high stakes in politics of representation debates. Putting forth a framework for talking about representation, difference, and diversity in an era in which user-generated content, individualized media consumption, and the blurring of producer/consumer roles has lessened the utility of traditional models of media representation analysis, Shaw finds new insight on the edge of media consumption with the invisible, marginalized gamers who are surprising in both their numbers and their influence in mainstream gamer culture. © 2015 by the Regents of the University of Minnesota. Do the institutions of labour regulation hamper the development of `new economy' industries in coordinated market economies? The article discusses the specific situation of the video games industry as a `creative industry' and its work and employment model. It examines the development of the value chain structure and its consequences for risk distribution among companies. The results show a very high employment flexibility of video game development companies in Germany, Sweden and Poland. Regulative or institutional constraints on flexibility do not play an important role. The example of Sweden demonstrates that even union representatives are no obstacle to flexibility.
