Home and the extended-self: Exploring associations between clutter and wellbeing

Authors:

Abstract and Figures

Research on clutter in non-clinical populations is scarce. Existing research typically examines clutter’s negative effect on quality of life. Assertions from self-help books and lifestyle media that living with less clutter has beneficial health and psychological outcomes have received limited scientific attention. This study aimed to address a significant gap in the literature by exploring the associations between home self-extension variables (subjective clutter, objective clutter, home self-expression and declutter habit) and wellbeing (measured through the PERMA model). A general population sample of 1,111 adults (mostly women) participated in this cross-sectional correlational study. Correlation and regression results revealed that home self-extension variables, particularly subjective clutter and psychological home, account for substantial variance of wellbeing. The subjective-objective nature of clutter is discussed and a refined definition of clutter embracing its subjective nature is proposed. We conclude that home self-extension, and clutter in particular, are significant predictors of wellbeing.

... Past research examined clutter's effects on decision-making, life satisfaction, and well-being, uncovering more indecision, reduced life satisfaction, and worse overall well-being because of clutter [2][3][4][5]. Several studies discussed the impacts of clutter on specific measurements of well-being, showing positive relationships between clutter and lower quality of life, stress, binge eating, and increased work-related tension [6][7][8][9]). Negative impacts of clutter appear to affect people across the lifespan, reducing subjective well-being in university students, adults, and older adults [5,10,11]. ...
... The causes of hoarding disorder are unclear; however, deficits in social and occupational functioning are known to contribute to hoarding disorder [18]. The diagnosis of hoarding disorder includes a specification for excessive acquisition, which is defined as the accumulation of items that are not needed for which there is no available space [6]. More than eighty percent of individuals with hoarding disorder display excessive acquisition [14]. ...
... The proposed research will study decluttering behavior in a community-based sample, yielding insights on how and why decluttering outcomes vary in people who know they are struggling with managing their personal possessions but are not diagnosed with hoarding disorder. Research on clutter in non-clinical samples is sparse; however, there is a consensus that decluttering is a skill and can be learned [6]. Exploratory analyses, though limited in their generalizability, open avenues of future experimental research. ...

During the 2019–2020 global pandemic, mandated time at home suggested engagement in personal projects, such as home decluttering. Clutter (an overabundance of possessions) may impede one’s quality of life by interfering with space livability and social connections and prompting negative affect and financial problems. The present study explored action–state orientation, psychological reactance, and decisional procrastination with 227 American adults (M age = 49.9 years old). A latent class analysis tested for differences in cognition across groups. Results supported that persons who struggle with clutter reflect clusters or “classes” given their self-reported cognitive processes, with hesitant and indecisive participants experiencing greater negative impacts of clutter than action-oriented and decisive participants. Our findings suggested improving the decision-making and goal-directed capacities of those struggling with clutter may be effective as preventive and/or interventive strategies. Future research might consider when hesitation to initiate challenging tasks and indecision emerge in the decluttering timeline and how those who are prone to these cognitions may be supported in managing their personal possessions.
... [8][9][10][11] Clutter is defined as 'a subjective experience of possessions (material or other) that inhibit the curation of self-identity at home'. 12 However, clutter extends beyond the home environment and can also manifest in crowded public places (e.g., a shopping mall), at school or through visually overwhelming displays in retail stores. 10,[13][14][15] More broadly, clutter can refer to a collection of items or sounds that create disorganisation. ...
... 96 However, these scales were related, with higher scores on one corresponding to higher scores on the other (e.g., 'many' on the researchers' four-level rating scale aligns with 'very cluttered' on the Qualtrics participants' five-level rating scale). Additionally, although terms such as 'a lot' or 'a little' can be vague, 12 participant responses, using a rating scale with a different number of response categories and researchers' ratings, were correlated significantly. Moreover, exploratory analyses, especially those focused on specific clutter categories (i.e., visual, additional, and auditory) and the subitem level of clutter, require careful interpretation. ...

Purpose Cerebral visual impairment (CVI) is a brain‐based condition which can be exacerbated by clutter. This study aimed to explore the relation between clutter and visual fatigue in children with CVI and evaluate the effectiveness of clutter algorithm metrics in assessing visual clutter in photographs of children's play areas and the relation to visual fatigue. Methods Visual clutter was measured using algorithmic metrics, subjective observations by a clinical researcher (who also observed visual fatigue) and a Qualtrics survey. Results Seventy‐two children (mean performance age = 7 years 4 months) were included. Visual fatigue was present in over 90% of children. Results revealed a relation between clutter and visual fatigue observations ( r s = 0.29; p = 0.01) and between visual clutter observations from researchers and Qualtrics participants ( r s = 0.32; p = 0.02). Certain metrics were correlated with visual clutter observations ( r s ranging from −0.30 to 0.51, p ‐values ranging from <0.001 to 0.03), but not with visual fatigue. Conclusions Children with CVI presented with visual fatigue, particularly in cluttered environments. Therefore, parents, caregivers, teachers and clinicians should be attentive to visual fatigue signs, as early recognition and intervention can help address the child's needs more effectively. Algorithms that effectively quantify visual clutter are valuable tools that can be integrated to enhance the assessment of clutter and its relation with visual fatigue to advance CVI research methodology. However, a clinician is required to assess visual fatigue and to obtain detailed information on environmental clutter, which algorithms alone may not fully capture. Finally, we recognise that visual fatigue and the impact of clutter should be integrated into psychoeducation and the comprehensive assessment of individuals with CVI.
... In the first category, when the interviewee declares "what my consumption represents and reveals about me to other people", I believe that the symbolism behind this comment is also linked to the use of possession as a form of social positioning through the extension of the individual's self (Belk 1988;Rogers and Hart 2021). Thus, it can also be argued that the construction of an identity based on brands and products is also linked to the impact that such a factor can have on self-esteem (Oh 2021) and self-concept (Yoon, Skurnik and Carpenter 2013) of the individual, which may have consequences for their well-being (Rogers and Hart 2021). ...

The psychological connection between mobile media (e.g., smartphones) and the self is a central consideration of mobile communication scholarship. Using a two-wave panel design (N = 227), we tested potential antecedents and consequences of a key construct that indexes this connection – smartphone self-extension. Both functionality and identity self-extension predicted perceiving smartphone use as more enjoyable. Moreover, functionality self-extension was predicted by frequent and habitual smartphone use, whereas identity self-extension was predicted by smartphone use to pass time while bored, problematic smartphone use, and viewing the smartphone as a reflection of self (and predicted less autonomy). These findings pave the way for future research and theory on smartphone self-extension.

... Usually, rooms with too many unordered objects can disturb our concentration and make us feel tired psychologically to the point where we are no longer productive if we need to work there. Well-being is generally associated with less cluttered homes, although it is all, eventually, a matter of subjectivity (Rogers & Hart, 2021). ...

The purpose of the present paper is to analyze the elements that can bring a state of well-being to the client in the setting of psychotherapy sessions. Every element has its own effect on the client; according to Davies (2018), for example, windows that allow the passage of sunlight could bring about a state of calm and relaxation; plants, as they are a part of nature, can also contribute to mental well-being; the way therapist and client sit is also meant to improve their relationship, and establish it on equal and friendly terms; colors should also be chosen to suggest a soothing atmosphere, and, to this purpose, greens and blues are recommended. Psychological and cultural perceptions of the psychotherapy space design will be considered, together with the recommendations of psychoanalysts such as Sigmund Freud. By examining past and present trends and recommendations, we could draw general conclusions about the psychotherapeutic relationship and the way it can be facilitated by space design.
... This struggle with managing enormous volumes of possessions is illustrated in an ethnography of 32 middle-class American families (Arnold et al., 2012), which contains photographs of cars in driveways because garages are stuffed with possessions, a shower cubicle filled with clothes, and a display of 248 dolls in a child's bedroom. Clutter might seem unimportant, but it can result in procrastination, higher cortisol levels, lower wellbeing, and reduced attention in children (Ferrari et al., 2017;Fisher et al., 2014;Rogers & Hart, 2021;Roster et al., 2016;Saxbe & Repetti, 2010). A minimalist lifestyle may help to reduce clutter levels, potentially reducing procrastination, and lowering cortisol levels, thus improving wellbeing. ...

Everyone must consume, but the wealthy consume more than most. Half of global household emissions come from the world's top 10% of income earners. In this review, we investigate the minimalist lifestyle to find out if minimalism could deliver the dual benefit of reduced carbon emissions and increased wellbeing. Minimalists have voluntarily chosen to have few possessions, despite economic and social structures that encourage consumption. Having fewer possessions suggests they might have a lower carbon emissions. A review of three other low‐consumption lifestyles: frugalism, tightwadism and voluntary simplicity, offers some support for this hypothesis, but the empirical evidence regarding minimalism is scant. We also review minimalist motivations, finding some support for a positive association between wellbeing and minimalism. We conclude that while minimalism might offer wellbeing benefits, research on carbon emissions is inconclusive. Furthermore, even if minimalism did result in reduced emissions, the minimalist lifestyle maybe too individualistic to create social change. The creation of comfortable living space represents scientific interests for specialists of many fields, in particular architects and environmental psychologists. The current study is devoted to the analysis of the comfortable living space properties by an empirical method with the use of figurative and verbal representation. On the one hand, it considers architectural requirements for the organization of human habitat. On the other hand, it focuses on the psychological tools to identify the characteristics of the living environment, inherent in a comfortable space. We assume that there are differences between these two types of human perception of the living space. These differences can be determined, theoretically substantiated, and empirically validated. In addition, these differences may indicate the existence of a particular level of spatial literacy measured by such criteria as “the degree of spatial organization” and “the level of spatial familiarization”. To test the formulated hypothesis, we have used several methodological tools. First, the projective drawing technique “My dream house and I”, which makes it possible to obtain figurative information about the “stereotypical”, more imposed image of the living space or an ideal desirable architecture, which is determined by the institutional influence. Second, the projective drawing technique "I'm in a comfortable space", which allows us to get figurative information about the peculiarities of a person's own ideas about a comfortable space or desirable medium. Third, the "spatial semantic differential” (a verbal, linguistic matrix), which allows us to determine the representation of living space by such indicators as size, structure, dynamics, strength, as well as pragmatic, aesthetic, and ethical indicators. This methodological tool was used to assess the drawings made by the respondents according to the scales presented in the spatial semantic differential. The research was conducted by an interdisciplinary team of specialists from the field of environmental psychology and architectural design practice. A qualitative analysis of the data done by the method of descriptive statistics lets us identify indicators that allow architects and psychologists to describe two types of drawings. The quantitative analysis of the data was done with the use of descriptive and mathematical statistical methods, in particular the analysis of significant differences. It lets us obtain information about those indicators of space representation that are significant for the image of the “dream house”, and those relevant for the image of the “comfortable space”. The current article presents intermediate results of a pilot study conducted among respondents with a diverse background: the first and second-year students from different faculties and regions.

PERMA-Profiler is a well-being scale to measure multi-component well-being regarding Seligman’s approach. The validity and reliability results have demonstrated that its score is valid and reliable in the original study, but it is important to indicate and generalize the results of it. To this end, we performed a reliability generalization meta-analysis using 71 Cronbach alpha coefficients from empirical studies that met the inclusion criteria. We used the random-effects model using Bonett’s transformation method. The pooled alpha was 0.914, 95% CI [0.902–0.925] for the overall PERMA-Profiler, 0.857, 95% CI [0.842–0.871] for Positive emotions, 0.657, 95% CI [0.623–0.690] for Engagement, 0.804, 95% CI [0.780–0.829] for Relationship, 0.855, 95% CI [0.838–0.871] for Meaning, 0.783, 95% CI [0.760–0.805] for Accomplishment. Meta-regression and analog to the ANOVA analysis indicated that continuous and categorical variables did not significantly affect reliability estimates except for the Likert type. As a result, we proposed suggestions for substantive research using the PERMA-Profiler and future psychometric research on it.

One important problem in the measurement of non-cognitive characteristics such as personality traits and attitudes is that it has traditionally been made through Likert scales, which are susceptible to response biases such as social desirability (SDR) and acquiescent (ACQ) responding. Given the variability of these response styles in the population, ignoring their possible effects on the scores may compromise the fairness and the validity of the assessments. Also, response-style-induced errors of measurement can affect the reliability estimates and overestimate convergent validity by correlating higher with other Likert-scale-based measures. Conversely, it can attenuate the predictive power over non-Likert-based indicators, given that the scores contain more errors. This study compares the validity of the Big Five personality scores obtained: (1) ignoring the SDR and ACQ in graded-scale items (GSQ), (2) accounting for SDR and ACQ with a compensatory IRT model, and (3) using forced-choice blocks with a multi-unidimensional pairwise preference model (MUPP) variant for dominance items. The overall results suggest that ignoring SDR and ACQ offered the worst validity evidence, with a higher correlation between personality and SDR scores. The two remaining strategies have their own advantages and disadvantages. The results from the empirical reliability and the convergent validity analysis indicate that when modeling social desirability with graded-scale items, the SDR factor apparently captures part of the variance of the Agreeableness factor. On the other hand, the correlation between the corrected GSQ-based Openness to Experience scores, and the University Access Examination grades was higher than the one with the uncorrected GSQ-based scores, and considerably higher than that using the estimates from the forced-choice data. Conversely, the criterion-related validity of the Forced Choice Questionnaire (FCQ) scores was similar to the results found in meta-analytic studies, correlating higher with Conscientiousness. Nonetheless, the FCQ-scores had considerably lower reliabilities and would demand administering more blocks. Finally, the results are discussed, and some notes are provided for the treatment of SDR and ACQ in future studies.

We examined psychological home, place attachment, clutter, and life satisfaction with adult women of color (n = 99; M age = 50.33 years old) drawn from a larger national sample of women who self-identified with clutter tendencies. We assessed resource (i.e., annual household income, homeownership status, and relationship status) and contextual (i.e., type of dwelling, number of people in household, and years in residence) variables, plus measures of psychological home, place attachment, and clutter, as predictors of life satisfaction among women of color. Hierarchical regression analyses revealed that psychological home was a significant predictor of life satisfaction over and above resource and contextual variables. Place attachment and clutter did not moderate the relationship between home and life satisfaction. However, clutter mediated the relationship between home and life satisfaction. Implications for women of color, study limitations, and future directions are discussed.

Hoarding disorder can be defined as a persistent difficulty in discarding items, due to distress associated with such disposal or a perceived need to save items regardless of their actual value. Such behavior must result in the accumulation of clutter, which significantly compromises living conditions, causing distress and/or functional impairment. The most frequently hoarded items are objects and animals. The point prevalence of clinically significant hoarding was estimated to be 1.5 to 2.1% in the general population, and may exceed 6% in the elderly. HD poses a range of health and safety hazards to individuals, especially older adults, generating significant costs to society. The diagnosis of HD is clinical, and should only be established after general medical conditions and other mental disorders that can lead to accumulating behavior have been ruled out. HD appears to follow a chronic, progressive course, and is commonly associated with psychiatric comorbidities. Studies indicate that genetic, familial, cognitive, and traumatic factors are implicated in the etiology of HD. To date, psychotherapies have been the most widely studied therapeutic approaches, but the results of these studies show small effects. Research into pharmacological approaches to HD is still incipient, precluding any conclusions of efficacy. KEYWORDS: hoarding disorder; collecting; psychopathology.

The authors articulate a model specifying links between (a) individuals and the physical environments they occupy and (b) the environments and observers' impressions of the occupants. Two studies examined the basic phenomena underlying this model: Interobserver consensus, observer accuracy, cue utilization, and cue validity. Observer ratings based purely on offices or bedrooms were compared with self-and peer ratings of occupants and with physical features of the environments. Findings, which varied slightly across contexts and traits, suggest that (a) personal environments elicit similar impressions from independent observers, (b) observer impressions show some accuracy, (c) observers rely on valid cues in the rooms to form impressions of occupants, and (d) sex and race stereotypes partially mediate observer consensus and accuracy. Consensus and accuracy correlations were generally stronger than those found in zero-acquaintance research.

In recent years there has been a proliferation of writing on the meaning of home within the disciplines of sociology, anthropology, psychology, human geography, history, architecture and philosophy. Although many researchers now understand home as a multidimensional concept and acknowledge the presence of and need for multidisciplinary research in the field, there has been little sustained reflection and critique of the multidisciplinary field of home research and the diverse, even contradictory meanings of this term. This paper brings together and examines the dominant and recurring ideas about home represented in the relevant theoretical and empirical literature. It raises the question whether or not home is (a) place(s), (a) space(s), feeling(s), practices, and/or an active state of state of being in the world? Home is variously described in the literature as conflated with or related to house, family, haven, self, gender, and journeying. Many authors also consider notions of being-at-home, creating or making home and the ideal home. In an effort to facilitate interdisciplinary conversations about the meaning and experience of home each of these themes are briefly considered in this critical literature review.

Biologically embedded experiences alter developmental trajectories in ways that can influence health, learning, and/or behavior. These systematic differences in experiences may contribute to different biological outcomes as individuals grow and develop, including at the neural level. Previous studies of biologically embedded experiences on neurodevelopment have focused on large‐scale institutional or economic factors (e.g., socioeconomic status (SES)) and psychosocial factors (e.g., caregiving behavior). Less attention has focused on how the quality of the immediate home settings, such as the physical home environment (PHYS), influences neurodevelopment. Moreover, no study has investigated these effects in adolescents, who undergo significant physical maturation and neurodevelopment that may influence how they respond to their physical environments. The goal of the current study was to examine whether PHYS quality is biologically embedded in the developing adolescent brain as evidenced by cognitive achievement and cortical development in 56 (48% female) healthy adolescents (14 to 18 years (M = 16.83 years, SD = 1.17). Using in‐home assessments of the physical home environment, anatomical brain scans, and indices of academic achievement, we found that adolescents who have more physical problems in the home (e.g., structural hazards, crowding, excessive noise, poorly lit) have thinner prefrontal cortices, which was associated with lower levels of reading achievement, independent of SES and psychosocial factors. By conducting home visits to assess physical characteristics of adolescents’ home, we highlight a typically overlooked aspect of the home environment that has relevance for adolescents’ cognitive and brain development.
