Bloxxgame A Simulation Game for Teaching Blockchain

Authors:

Abstract

Bloxxgame has been designed for experience-based instruction of blockchain concepts and can be used in the classroom or for online teaching. In this presentation the idea and concept of bloxxgame is explained. Bloxxgame has now developed into a professional teaching tool that provides a platform for teaching and self-study of all basic blockchain principles. You can see how it works with the free demo version: https://bloxxgame.io

With bloxxgame we
want students to get
in touch with the
fundamentals of
public blockchains
and crypto-assets.

Why is
understanding
the basics about
blockchain
relevant for all
students?
Because blockchain
technology will
fundamentally transform
the way how we live
and work just like the
internet has
done it.

Blockchain
technology was
first designed to
support an
alternative way of
storing and
transmitting
value.
It started 2008/09 during
the last financial crisis
when Bitcoin was
launched.
Today Bitcoin is worth
over $ 350 billion
and has a daily
trade volume of
more than $ 35 billion.

After Bitcoin
an avalanche of
other blockchain
applications have
been launched.
They all want to
change the same:
Develop an alternative
way to store and
transmit value
and information.
Remove the need for
trusted third
parties like banks
or governments.

But wait! How should this work?

Bloxxgame is
an instrument
for teachers.
Bloxxgame is
designed as a
teaching tool for
higher education
and professional
training.
Bloxxgame is a virtual
playground where
students create
together a public
blockchain.

Before using bloxxgame
students need to know
some basics:
What is a cryptographic hash?
How works asymmetric encryption?
How do you create a digital
signature?

In bloxxgame each student
acts a node which is
connected to a shared
public bloxxchain

The game
starts with
some basic
operations like
creating
transactions in
the wallet.

Students build together a blockchain
They experience the mechanism and relevance of
shared consensus without a central control.

What you can find in our conference-paper:
A detailed description how bloxxgame was
developed from a white-board classroom
method to a web-based serious game.
Literature review, analysis and reflection about
gamification, teaching approach and
experience with bloxxgame.
Description of possible teaching scenarios.

Outlook
Bloxxgame is going to be open source.
We can offer bloxxgame as freemium service, it
is sponsored with by IBM:
Teachers can test it for free.
With subscription it can be used for teaching.
Subscription fee will be low, it must cover
hosting, maintenance and development of
bloxxgame.
