O presente trabalho teve como objetivo o estudo dos impactos causados pela saída da Ford do Brasil com o foco no emprego da cidade de Camaçari - Bahia (BA). Utilizou-se o método de análise regional diferencial-estrutural, mais conhecido como shift-share. Os resultados demonstraram forte dependência do mercado de trabalho da cidade em relação à montadora. Constatou-se que os trabalhadores estão especializados e concentrados na indústria de transformação, o que sugere dificuldades para se realocarem no mercado de trabalho da região. Tais constatações deram origem a uma discussão relacionada aos incentivos fiscais concedidos pelo governo e a possíveis políticas públicas para redução dos impactos da saída da montadora.

This study of coping with unemployment traces the distress levels of workers in 4 closing and 12 nonclosing General Motors (GM) plants. Workers were interviewed 3 months before plants closed, 1 year after, and 2 years after (final N = 1,136). Tested were (a) effects of unemployment on symptoms of depression, anxiety, and somatization; (b) linkages between depression and subsequent unemployment, controlling for workers' gender, race, marital status, age, education, prior income, and seniority; and (c) the relationship between workers' coping decisions and subsequent depression. Results showed that unemployment at Waves 2 and 3 was related to prior frequency of symptoms of depression. Depression, in turn, was alleviated for workers whose coping decisions at Wave 2 fit with their Wave 3 outcomes: those who both wanted and found a job, lost a job they disliked, or remained unemployed as planned.

Sekä Suomessa että ulkomailla kvalifikaatiovaatimusten kehä on umpeutumassa, koska nykyisin edellytetään työntekijöiltä samanaikaisesti yleissivistäviä, ammatillisia ja sosiaalisia kvalifikaatioita. 1990-luvun työmarkkinakansalaisen meriitiksi muodostuu laaja-alainen opiskelu- ja työhistoria. Työuralla eteneminen aletaan vähitellen mieltää etenemisvalmiutena työtehtävästä toiseen – ei enää välttämättä työpaikan alemmalta hierarkiatasolta ylemmälle.

Social issues in the workplace are of increasing concern to social services agencies, Corporate America, and organized labor. Increasing numbers of social workers are practicing in occupational and industrial settings, but the profession is still struggling with conceptualizing and implementing a curriculum that will prepare students for these careers and, at the same time, will be consistent with social work values and ethics. Few U.S. schools of social work, however, offer courses in the area, and even fewer offer a concentration or a specialization in occupational social work. The University of Southern California School of Social Work was one of the pioneers; it has offered a concentration in industrial/ occupational social work since 1982. During the decade of its existence, the faculty teaching in the concentration have developed a comprehensive model for teaching social work in work-related settings. The authors present a model curriculum for teaching occupational social work in a master’s program from an ecosystems perspective with an integrated and coordinated approach. They provide a detailed description of the rationale for the program, its themes and objectives, and its application across six courses and the field practicum in occupational/industrial social work and then explore the program’s utility for second-year master’s students.

It is axiomatic among Marxist scholars that class consciousness increases with rising levels of job insecurity and economic uncertainty. This paper examines the main factors affecting the development of class consciousness in the era of the new economy which is punctuated by downsizing, contingent work, and a general decline in employment security for many workers. We use data from the 1998 Indiana Survey of Work in Polarized Economy (ISWIPE) to examine factors affecting class consciousness. Results of the study suggest that the recent economic transformation has had considerable consequences for workers’ class consciousness and that many of these effects vary in their impact by class.
