Automated Ultrasonic Crack Follower for Fatigue Studies

An ultrasonic system for monitoring the extension of fatigue cracks in heavy metal sections was developed which automatically records growth increments of 0.010 inch. A minor modification is discussed which allows resolution to be improved to 0.001 inch if required. (Author)

However, the process planning mainly depends on human experiences which result in low level degree of automation and intelligence for a long period. [Show full abstract] intelligent process planning method based on feature-based history machining data is proposed for aircraft structural parts. The history machining data model is built firstly according to the characteristic of aircraft structural parts. Then the intelligent process planning is realized based on the history machining data model by considering the resource constraint, process constraint and result constraint. An application example shows that the proposed approach can accumulate machining experience effectively and improve the efficiency and quality of process planning, as well as the degree of automation and intelligence.

This research explores to automatically predict new terms based on linguistic features and statistical behaviors of noun phrases during a special period. It integrates both syntactic function value and TF-IDF value into an automatic term extraction system to weight new term candidates. Research questions include: what are the linguistic and statistic properties of new terms during a special ... [Show full abstract] period? Will linguistic features contribute to prediction of new terms? And will statistic features like, TFIDF Value contribute to prediction of new terms? Correspondingly, a series of experiments are conducted on medical corpus to examine a group of new terms' distribution properties and syntactic features across two years in comparison. The results show there does exist significant difference between two groups of values. Regardless of this limitation, this research is meaningful as it attempts to realize automation of selection process of new medical terms, which will greatly avoid subjective decisions and reduce experts' workloads.

In this study we observe the daily work of nineteen software developers of a large Italian manufacturing company for a period of ten months to determine the effects of pair programming on the use of tools. Fifteen developers are existing team members and four have recently joined the team. They practice Pair Programming spontaneously, that is, when they feel it is needed. We identify the tools ... The data have been extracted non-invasively by means of PROM – tool for automated data collection and analysis. The preliminary results indicate that developers working in pairs devote significantly more time to programming activities than developers working alone.
