The manuscript tradition of Proba's "Cento" was investigated by K. Schenkl, whose edition (CSEL 1888) remains the basis of every further inquiry. He knew some 25 manuscripts, only eleven of which are reported in his apparatus. Going through catalogues I have discovered about 40 new manuscripts, most of which belong to the humanistic age. Although I consider restricted evidence (I have collated systematically about 100 verses), some facts seem to be plain. The humanistic tradition originates from three old manuscripts (Cantabrig. Sanctae Trinitatis O.7.7; Parisinus Lat. 13048; Vaticanus Pal. Lat. 1753), while another very important old manuscript (Parisinus Lat. 7701) has no progeny. I try to place all the manuscripts in a stemma.

Ne-Kašićevi dijelovi u Kašićevu prijevodu Svetoga pisma

Kašić's translation, as the first complete translation of the Holy Bible into Croatian deserves a unique place amongst Croatian Bible translations. Of the manuscripts that have been preserved only a small portion carry Kašić's signature while the major part consists of transcripts. The Wang Bi Recension of the Laozi

There are seventy-nine places in Wang Bi's Laozi zhu where the text of the Laozi transmitted over this commentary differs from quotations of it contained within the commentary. Building on the textual studies of Professor Shima Kunio, this essay demonstrates that the readings given in the commentary are supported in practically every case by a series of early quotations and texts of the Laozi, ... [Show full abstract] such as the Mawangdui manuscripts and the “Old Manuscripts” that form the basis of Fu Yi and Fan Yingyuan's editions. A comparison of all of these differences shows that Wang Bi's original text must have belonged to the same broad textual family as these early manuscripts, being most closely linked to the two “Old Manuscripts” and less directly related to the Mawangdui manuscripts. In most of the these cases, the textus receptus has been supplanted by the reading transmitted through the Heshang Gong commentary. Consequently, it is now necessary to replace the textus receptus of Wang Bi's Laozi with a conflated version of the two “Old Manuscripts” and, in some cases, the Mawangdui manuscripts.

An analysis of pen flourishing surrounding initials in a manuscript can provide useful evidence about the manuscript's place of origin and date. The reason for this lies in the technique of the flourisher: it is pen work that appears to have been no more skilled than that of the scribe. Indeed, it could on occasion have been the work of the copyist himself, or at least one of the same calibre ... [Show full abstract] working by his side. Because flourishing appears no more skilled as a technique than is writing, it would seem to require a training that is no more specialized. This is important when a comparison is made with the training, skill and payment of the artist-illuminator also employed in book production: in these respects the scribe and flourisher would be in the same category, but not in that of the artist. The writing and the flourishing could have been carried out at the same time, or with very little time lag between the two; there would have been no necessity to hold up production at this stage for the arrival of the artist-illuminator, who was presumably a more rare and highly paid workman.
