"On my word, we'll not carry coals": "Romeo and Juliet" is climate fiction

Abstract

The first line of "Romeo and Juliet" is "Gregory, on my word, we'll not carry coals". Later, another sort of energy is mentioned when Romeo sees Juliet on the balcony and says "Juliet is the sun". Elizabethan England was quickly undergoing an energy transition from the sun (wood) to coal even as Shakespeare was writing his plays. Shakespeare wrote "Romeo and Juliet" as an allegory against coal, as Shakespeare could have been aware of the noxious and damaging effects of fossil fuels even then.
