Organizational Effectiveness and Career Support: an integrated model for Indian Millennials

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to examine the impact of organisational support for career development (OSCD) on organisational effectiveness (OE). The research is limited to the IT companies in Bangalore city in India. It is a cross-sectional study based on responses collected from 252 millennial employees. The hypotheses on collected data were tested with the help of SEM. The results indicated a significant impact of organisational support for career development on organisational citizenship behaviour and organisational effectiveness. The study bridges the gap in the literature on the impact of organisational support for career development and organisational outcomes. The research perspective of this article is that when employees perceive the organization's support in their career development, they reciprocate it with positive behaviour subsequently contributing to the overall effectiveness of the organization.

Purpose The purpose of this study is to provide human resource (HR) practitioners of multinational companies aspiring to invest in these two countries with guidelines for attaining organizational effectiveness through people. Design/methodology/approach This study develops and tests a multiple criteria decision-making model with data collected in the banking sectors of India and Mozambique. It compares the job engagement, team building and innovation strategy preferences of Indian personnel with those of Mozambican employees. Findings The findings of the study reveal the differences in the perceptions of the respondents of both countries regarding the importance of the strategies for organizational effectiveness. Research limitations/implications Despite several contributions, the study has certain limitations too. Although utmost care was taken to avoid the issue of common method variance, the cross-sectional self-reported design of the study might be adversely affected by common method bias (MacKenzie and Podsakoff, 2012). Hence, future research might be conducted using different designs, such as diary studies or longitudinal studies. Future research might also be conducted making use of organizational productivity case studies to demonstrate the practicability of customizing the HR strategies using the multi-attribute decision-making approach. Practical implications This body of work is an addition to the existing literature on cross-national studies in the field of HR management (HRM) and adds to the limited literature on HRM in the least developed countries. The study is designed to provide guidelines for the HR practitioners of multi-national companies in these two countries to help them achieve enhanced organizational effectiveness. This should be of particular interest to the HR managers of the Indian companies aspiring to invest in Mozambique. Originality/value Research in the area of HRM is mainly limited to the developed and developing nations, with very few studies centering on emerging economies. While most cross-national studies on organizational effectiveness are also largely focused on developed and developing nations, this study is unusual, in that its focus is on a fast-developing nation (India) and an emerging economy (Mozambique).

This research aims to evaluate the ideal culture that determines the satisfaction of employees. The level of satisfaction at the job should be based on recruiting more professionals because it is vital to attract and retain professionals. Nevertheless, the organizational culture was addressed as a significant factor affecting qualified professionals' job satisfaction. Thirty empirical papers from the period from 2014 to 2019 were chosen for this research. There are many types of research being conducted about job satisfaction, but there is limited research being conducted to explore professionals' job satisfaction. It reviews competing value frameworks studies and theories on organizational culture toward job satisfaction and also the concepts of clan, market, clan, adhocracy, market, hierarchy, and knowledge sharing cultures. The result of this literature study found that the impact of the clan, adhocracy, and knowledge sharing culture significantly influences the professional’s job satisfaction.

This research aimed to examine the impact of transformational leadership on organisational performance at the University of Jordan. A questionnaire was distributed to a sample of (280) administrative employees at the University of Jordan. Data were analysed using SPSS software. Information about respondents was analysed using descriptive analysis. While multiple regression was used to determine whether the four dimensions of transformational leadership; idealised influence, inspirational motivation, intellectual stimulation and individualised consideration have a significant impact on organisational performance. The findings revealed that the transformational leadership had a significant impact on organisational performance along with idealised influence and intellectual stimulation. However, individualised consideration and inspirational motivation did not have a significant impact on organisational performance according to the respondents’ ratings.

In this paper we report a time-lagged study over six months analyzing the indirect effect of protean career orientation on changes in turnover intentions via personal work goal progress in a sample of millennial employees. Consistent with protean career theory and social exchange theory, we found that protean career orientation indirectly leads to decreases in turnover intentions over time and this effect was moderated by organizational career management practices. This effect was observed because the relationship between goal progress and decreases in turnover intentions became less salient when organizations were perceived to offer high levels of formal career practices. We discuss the implications for research and practice.

This article aims to develop and test a research model that explores and investigates the role of core-self evaluations, pro-active personality and leader-member exchange as the influencers of work engagement and its impact on task performance. The relationships were tested via structural equation modelling using data collected from a sample of program analysts from IT sector with special reference to TIDEL Park, Coimbatore. The findings indicate that all the identified influencers namely core-self evaluations, pro-active personality and leader-member exchange have emerged as significant influencers of work engagement (R2 = 0.69). Furthermore, work engagement had a significant impact on task performance (R2 = 0.50). Special focus and initiatives have to be harnessed on having good leader member-exchange and recruiting employees who are proactive and who have core-self evaluations as they have shown significant impact on work engagement and hence task performance. Organisations must focus on creating and establishing these influencers in the workplace since it leads to employees being engaged and consequently task performance. Implications for theory and practice are discussed.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is twofold: first, to examine relevant organizational “human” aspects that support circular economy (CE); and second, to investigate the influence of perception of organizational justice (OJ), psychological empowerment on job satisfaction (JS) through mediating role of organizational citizenship behavior (OCB). Design/methodology/approach The study used survey questionnaire. The data were statistically analyzed using structural equation modeling (SEM) to test hypotheses of the study. Findings OJ positively and significantly influences psychological empowerment. Also, it was found that OCB and psychological empowerment to positively and significantly influence JS. Furthermore, OCB positively and significantly mediates the influence of OJ and psychological empowerment on JS. Practical implications Employees should be provided with fair and empowering environment to derive positive outcomes in terms of organizational citizenship behavior and JS. The study also suggests recognizing the importance of OCB in an organization to enhance JS and support CE. Originality/value The study presents empirical evidence in Indian context on how to encourage employees to display voluntary job behaviors and keep them job satisfied.

The purpose of the study was to examine the factors influencing commitment among employees in the IT industry. This study is limited to the top companies in the IT sector in Chennai. The respondents surveyed were active IT employees. The study provides significant current information on HR practices in the IT industry. The researcher proposed a set of research questions to understand the level of HR practices on the commitment level of the employees. The hypotheses are tested on the data collected from the IT employees. Statistical tools like factor analysis and step wise regression was applied to understand the level of importance each factor namely career development, decision-making, brand value, and performance appraisal has on the commitment of the employees. The findings reveal that the best form of HR practices shall impact the organisational commitment of the employee in a positive manner. The results showed that variables like career development, decision-making, brand value, and performance appraisal have a positive impact on the affective component dimensions of commitment. Current HRM research has a strong focus how organisation can improve employee’s commitment to the organisation. Also, the insight gained from this study contributes to the future development of this line of research in other industries also.

Purpose This paper aims to study the effects of perceived organizational support (POS) on employees’ knowledge sharing intention (KSI). More specifically, this study examined whether these effects are moderated by job characteristics (JCs) and are mediated by organizational citizenship behavior (OCB). Design/methodology/approach Data for 426 employees were collected via an online questionnaire from four IT companies in South Korea. Combined effects in the variable set were analyzed using conditional process analyses (Hayes, 2013). Findings The results indicate that POS positively affects OCB and KSI, and that JCs moderate the relationship between POS and OCB. Also, the relationship between POS and KSI is mediated by OCB, and the hypothesized moderated mediation model is confirmed. Originality/value This study is novel in empirically establishing how employees’ KSI is affected by POS as an integrative construct bringing together JCs and OCB. This paper intends to fill a methodological gap and nurture future research by adopting conditional process analyses assessing whether JCs moderate the relationship between POS and OCB and mediate the effects of OCB on KSI.
