Measuring Impact in Media Development: Key Trends

Abstract

As donors increasingly seek impact for their dollars, monitoring and evaluation has become an important part of the work carried out by media organizations, both news outlets and freedom of expression NGOs. However, their approach to evaluation needs improvement. This study is based on a total of 77 evaluation projects documented by the author during the period 2009-2019. They included evaluations carried out or commissioned by partner organizations and grantees the author worked closely with as well as evaluations done or supervised by the author. All these evaluations were used for internal purposes.
