New data on the morphology and distribution of the cryptic species Dasypoda morawitzi Radchenko, 2016 (Hymenoptera: Melittidae) with corrections to the diagnosis of Dasypoda s. str.

Abstract

Dasypoda morawitzi Radchenko, 2016, a cryptic bee species separated from D. hirtipes (Fabricius, 1793) and recently described from Eastern Europe, Western Kazakhstan, Caucasus and Turkey, is for the first time recorded from Czech Republic, Romania and Spain. We also provide additional new records for several other countries. An additional comparative morphological analysis of D. morawitzi with D. hirtipes using light and electron microscopy is provided. New morphological differences between these two species are highlighted. Significant variation in hair morphology on some parts of the female body of these two species are shown. Differences and similarities between D. morawitzi and D. hirtipes are discussed and the impossibility of a synonymy of D. graeca Lepeletier & Serville, 1828 with D. morawitzi is discussed. Corrected and new diagnostic features of the subgenus Dasypoda s. str. are given.

Silvery pantaloon bee Dasypoda argentata is a species of solitary bee. It has been recorded only in over a dozen localities in Poland. In this note the presence of this species in Warsaw is described. In June 2021 males and females were recorded in Las Bemowski on the city’s outskirts.

Wild bees represent a global group of highly diversified insect pollinators, nowadays concerningly well known for their widespread observed patterns of decline. Amongst them is the genus Dasypoda, a widespread Palearctic clade of solitary bees generally poorly represented in entomological collections. Among the 39 accepted species of the genus, 35 are known by both sexes, and a large number of taxa are still known by a low number of specimens. The recently described taxon Dasypoda (Heterodasypoda) michezi Radchenko, 2017 endemic to southern Portugal is just such a case. The species was described from two male specimens, but no female material has been known to date. Here, we provide the first description of the female of D. michezi, collected close to the locus typicus in southern Portugal along with a series of conspecific males. Sex pairing is proposed based on the sympatry of the male and female specimens and on the similar morphology of non-sexual dimorphic traits and on the barcode of a fragment of Cytochrome Oxidase I. We provide high quality imaging of both sexes of D. michezi to help future identification of the species and present a key for all known species of the subgenus Heterodasypoda. We finally propose an IUCN status for D. michezi and discuss the conservation of such geographically restricted species in the current context of global change.

The first records of Dasypoda crassicornis (FRIESE, 1896) for Italy are reported. The species was found in three sites in western Liguria and the Piedmont Cottian Alps, thus extending its eastern range limit, previously known in France. The collecting site habitats and wildflowers visited by the species are also described.

Dasypoda bees are host-specialized solitary species distributed in the Palaearctic Region. In the framework of a global revision of this genus, comprehensive descriptions of three rare species (D. tibialis Morawitz, D. vulpecula Lebedev and D. iberica Warncke) are presented. The detailed morphology of the D. tibialis male and both sexes of D. vulpecula are given for the first time after a very partial original description. The females of D. tibialis and D. iberica are described for the first time and additional morphological characters of the male of D. iberica are provided. The lectotype of Dasypoda tibialis is designated. Host-plants and new localities are also presented.

A new bee species of the genus Dasypoda Latreille (Hymenoptera, Apoidea, Melittidae), D. michezi Radchenko sp. nov., is described from south-western Portugal. This species belongs to the subgenus Heterodasypoda and appears very similar to D. albimana Pérez 1905, which occurs in the west Mediterranean Basin. A detailed comparative diagnosis of D. michezi with the other 3 species of the subgenus Heterodasypoda, is provided. The new species is most easily distinguishable by the widened protrusion at the apex of the 6th sternum, which is deeply emarginated apically in the form of a wide triangle. In addition, the new species differs from other described species of the subgenus by the structure of the 7th and 8th sterna, male genitalia, and relative dimensions of antennal flagellomeres.

The present study is an update to the first Red List of European Bees published in 2014. The additional records are based on (i) comprehensive review of literature; (ii) new data provided by bee specialists in response to the publication of the first Red List; (iii) new developments in taxonomy of European bees including description of new cryptic species; (iv) new specimens from recent field collections. While the first Red List included a list of 1965 wild bee species with 75 genera, we found 86 additional species, while two more genera have been erected (Seladonia and Vestitohalictus), giving an updated total of 2051 species and 77 genera. The authors discuss the artificial framework of the study considered by International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) to produce the first Red List and they propose the more meaningful West Palaearctic biogeographical region. For this whole region, a first estimation gives 3408 wild bee species in 105 genera. The next taxa have been erected from subspecies to species status: Andrena (Euandrena) limosa Warncke, 1969, stat. n., Andrena (Plastandrena) oligotricha Mavromoustakis, 1952, stat. n.

A new bee species of the genus Dasypoda Latreille (Hymenoptera, Apoidea, Melittidae), D. morawitzi Radchenko sp. nov., is described. This species is closely related to, and easily confusable with, D. hirtipes (Fabricius), and its specimens have been previously attributed to the latter species. A comparative morphological analysis of D. morawitzi with other species of the D. hirtipes group is provided. The distribution and trophic links of this new species are discussed.

Checklist of bees (Apiformes) of the Czech Republic and Slovakia is given: altogether 681 species are known from both republics: 584 from the Czech Republic (469 from Bohemia and 570 from Moravia) and 643 from Slovakia. Ten species of the family Melittidae occur in the Czech Republic (9 in Bohemia, 10 in Moravia), 12 in Slovakia. Family Megachilidae is represented by 105 species in the Czech Republic (85 in Bohemia, 104 in Moravia) and 123 species in Slovakia. Stelis franconica Bluethgen, 1930 and Chelostoma emarginatum (Nylander, 1856) are new for Bohemia, Megachile nigriventris Schenck, 1868 for Moravia, and M. pyrenaea Pérez, 1903 for Slovakia. Stelis nasuta (Latreille, 1809), Hoplitis loti (F. Morawitz, 1867), and Osmia andrenoides Spinola, 1808 are removed from the fauna of Bohemia, Anthidium montanum F. Morawitz, 1864 from the fauna of the Czech Republic (both Bohemia and Moravia). Altogether 161 species of the family Apidae are known from the Czech Republic (124 from Bohemia, 157 from Moravia) and 185 species from Slovakia. Nomada atroscutellaris Strand, 1921 and N. trispinosa Schmiedeknecht, 1882 are new for Bohemia, Ceratina nigrolabiata Friese, 1896, Nomada melanopyga Schmiedeknecht, 1882, and N. tridentirostris Dours, 1873 are new for the Czech Republic (Moravia), Epeolus tarsalis F. Morawitz, 1874 is new for Slovakia. The following species are removed from the faunas because no reliable data are known: Pasites maculatus Jurine, 1807, Ceratina acuta Friese, 1896 and Nomada sybarita Schmiedeknecht, 1882 from Moravia, Biastes truncatus (Nylander, 1848), Nomada connectens Pérez, 1884, N. corcyraea Schmiedeknecht, 1882, N. imperialis Schmiedeknecht, 1882, N. incisa Schmiedeknecht, 1882, N. insignipes Schmiedeknecht, 1882, N. opaca Alfken, 1913, N. pectoralis F. Morawitz, 1877, N. pygidialis Schmiedeknecht, 1881, N. tenella Mocsáry, 1883, Tetraloniella graja (Eversmann, 1852), T. lyncea (Mocsáry, 1879), Synhalonia berlandi Dusmet, 1926, and Eucera taurica F. Morawitz, 1871 from Slovakia. Family Andrenidae is represented with 138 species in the Czech Republic (116 in Bohemia, 133 in Moravia) and 150 species in Slovakia. Andrena lagopus Latreille, 1809 is new for the Czech Republic (Moravia). Occurrences of A. chrysopus Pérez, 1903 and A. morio Brullé, 1832 in Bohemia, A. distinguenda Schenck, 1871 in Moravia, A. rugulosa E. Stoeckhert, 1935, A. sericata Imhoff, 1868, A. susterai Alfken, 1914, and A. trimmerana (Kirby, 1802) in the Czech Republic (Moravia) are confirmed. According to no reliable data, we remove A. anthrisci Bluethgen, 1925 from the fauna of Bohemia and A. curvana Warncke, 1965 from that of Slovakia. Family Colletidae has 45 species in the Czech Republic (37 in Bohemia, 43 in Moravia) and 46 species in Slovakia. Hylaeus kahri Förster, 1871 is new for the Czech Republic (Bohemia), and H. paulus Bridwell, 1919 for Slovakia. Occurrences of H. pectoralis Förster, 1871 and H. annulatus (Linnaeus, 1758) in Bohemia, H. cardioscapus Cockerell, 1924 and H. lineolatus (Schenck, 1861) in Moravia, and H. annulatus in Slovakia are confirmed. Colletes albomaculatus (Lucas, 1849), C. impunctatus Nylander, 1852 and Hylaeus clypearis (Schenck, 1853) are removed from the fauna of Bohemia; C. impunctatus, C. punctatus Mocsáry, 1877 and Hylaeus clypearis from the fauna of Moravia; and Colletes impunctatus, Hylaeus alpinus (F. Morawitz, 1867), H. clypearis, H. hungaricus (Alfken, 1905), H. soror (Pérez, 1903) and H. tyrolensis Förster, 1871 from fauna of Slovakia. Altogether 125 species of the family Halictidae occur in the Czech Republic (99 in Bohemia, 123 in Moravia) and 128 in Slovakia. The following species are new for the Czech Republic: Lasioglossum sabulosum (Warncke, 1986) (both Bohemia and Moravia), L. sub-fulvicorne austriacum Ebmer, 1974 (Bohemia), Halictus scabiosae (Rossi, 1790), Lasioglossum crassepunctatum (Bluethgen, 1923), and L. mesosclerum (Pérez, 1903) (Moravia). Lasioglossum convexiusculum (Schenck, 1853), L. intermedium (Schenck, 1870), L. sexmaculatum (Schenck, 1853), and Sphecodes marginatus Hagens, 1882 are new for Bohemia, Lassioglossum mesosclerum, L. parvulum (Schenck, 1853), L. rufitarse (Zetterstedt, 1838), and L. sabulosum are new for Slovakia. Occurrences of Sphecodes majalis Pérez, 1903 and S. spinulosus Hagens, 1875 in the Czech Republic (Moravia) and Halictus patellatus F. Morawitz, 1873 in Slovakia are confirmed. Pseudapis diversipes (Latreille, 1806), Lasioglossum elegans (Lepeletier, 1841), and Sphecodes pinguiculus Pérez, 1903 are removed from the fauna of the Czech Republic (Moravia) because no reliable occurrence data are available.

Dasypoda braccata makes branched nests with cells, that arranged serially at the ends of laterals. The inner walls of cells are not lined with secretory or any other matherials. The pollen ball of spherical form with two welts and one conical projections at the lower and hind parts. Data on behaviour of larvae are presented.

Evolution of bees was to a large degree governed by their ability to extend the possibility for nesting, be that by using new substrates (sandy soil, woody plants, soft-bodied or hollow stems. etc.), or by becoming less dependent on specific nesting substrates. The latter occurred in bee groups and species which converted to building cells from various imported or secreted substrates in already-existing cavities, or on the substrate surface. The extension of the range of foods consumed was less important. One of the main adaptations in the evolution of bees was the development of the instinct for greater care for progeny (protection of larval food from desiccation, excessive moisture or contamination, as well as protection of progeny from microbial invasion, parasites and predators).

Abstract - Phylogeny, biogeography and floral choice of the oligolectic bee genus Dasypoda Latreille 1802 (Hymenoptera, Apoidea, Melittidae). - The phylogeny of Melittidae is still discussed. Particularly, their monophyly is not established. The present study proposes a phylogenetic study of one of the 14 genera of Melittidae : genus Dasypoda Latreille 1802. On the basis of imago's morphological characters, the cladistic study confirms the Dasypoda monophyly inside Dasypodainae. Four new subgen- era are described : Microdasypoda n. subg., Heterodasypoda n. subg., Dasypoda n. comb. and Megadasypoda n. subg. The maps of species diversity seem to indicate a biogeographic constancy of the clade based on morphology. The maxima of specific diversity are mainly explained by link with glacial mediterranean refuges.The study of floral choice conform too the taxonomic option. Each subgenus visits preferentialy a particular floral family (Asteraceae, Cistaceae, Dipsacaceae and Malvaceae). An hypoth- esis on temporal and geographical origin of Dasypoda is proposed. Résumé - La phylogénie des Melittidae fait encore l'objet de discussions. En particulier, il n'est pas encore établi que la famille soit monophylétique. La présente étude a pour premier but d'établir la monophylie et la classification subgénérique phylogénétique de l'un des 14 genres de Melittidae : le genre Dasypoda Latreille 1802. L'étude cladistique basée sur des caractères morphologiques des imagos confirme la monophylie des Dasypoda au sein des Dasypodainae. Quatre sous-genres sont reconnus et décrits : Microdasypoda n. subg., Heterodasypoda n. subg., Dasypoda n. comb. et Megadasypoda n. subg. Les cartes de richesse spécifique de ces sous-genres semblent indiquer une cohérence biogéographique avec le clade basé sur la morphologie. Les centres de diversité respectifs trouvent leur meilleure expli- cation dans le rapprochement avec d'anciens refuges glaciaires méditerranéens. L'étude des choix floraux renforce aussi l'option taxonomique proposée. Chaque sous-genre pollinise préférentiellement des familles végétales particulières (Asteraceae, Cistaceae, Dipsacaceae ou Malvaceae). Ces nouvelles données permettent de proposer une hypothèse sur l'origine géographique et la période d'apparition des Dasypoda.
