Abstract

Purpose This paper aims to discuss the dynamic interactions among knowledge management, strategic foresight and emerging technologies, resulting in a framework that can help companies to shape these interactions for achieving positive outcomes. Design/methodology/approach This conceptual paper is based on prior literature streams, which were interrelated through an abductive research process. This iterative conceptualization approach led to the formation of testable propositions that advance the understanding on the interactions among knowledge management, strategic foresight and emerging technologies. Findings The framework demonstrates the existence of an actions cycle between strategic foresight and knowledge management through a constructivist perspective, where one can improve the other. These interactions can be useful both for the development of emerging technologies and for identifying these innovations in market that can be applied in companies. Hence, all these dynamic interactions do not point to a hegemonic relationship of one construct over the others, but for the value equality among them. Originality/value Although current literature points to the existence of relationships among knowledge management, strategic foresight and emerging technologies, the dynamism inherent in these interactions as well as their positive effects for companies’ results are not properly discussed. This paper fills such a gap and proposes directions for future research.

... Embedding real-time strategic foresight requires developing distinct organizational capabilities that span human capital, governance, and cultural mindsets. First and foremost is analytical fluency-the ability of decision-makers to interpret predictive models, question assumptions, and integrate probabilistic outputs into planning conversations [26]. ...
... Traditional supply chain planning based on historical averages is no longer adequate. One global retail chain implemented predictive foresight to optimize its inventory, pricing, and logistics operations in response to volatile market signals [26]. ...
... Training is another pillar of capacity-building. Equipping teams with tools like system mapping, Delphi methods, and scenario development fosters rigor and repeatability in foresight processes [26]. Equally important is creating psychological safety, where team members can freely explore unconventional ideas without fear of retribution or marginalization [37]. ...
... Ferreira et al. (2021) identified that strategic alliances and knowledge-sharing activities between partners enhance both knowledge exploration and exploitation, leading to improved new product development outcomes. In addition, Nascimento et al. (2021) showed how firms dynamically interact with external partners and emerging technologies through knowledge management and strategic foresight, further enhancing their exploration and exploitation capabilities. In addition, recent studies by Li et al. (2020) and Sakellariou and Vecchiato (2022) provide insights into the role of foresight and sensemaking in new product development. ...
... Their findings suggest that firms that excel in foresight are better able to identify emerging market opportunities and align their new product development efforts accordingly. Moreover, Nascimento et al. (2021) highlighted how strategic foresight interacts with knowledge management to drive innovation, especially in dynamic environments where firms must respond to emerging technologies. Sakellariou and Vecchiato (2022) expanded on this perspective by highlighting the role of foresight in sensemaking, which enables firms to interpret future trends and align their new product development activities accordingly. ...
... In addition, this study confirms that open innovation functions as a catalyst between knowledge management and new product development, facilitating the seamless integration of both internal and external knowledge sources. This finding supports prior research on the importance of external knowledge for successful new product development (Lichtenthaler, 2021;Nascimento et al., 2021), while also adding empirical support to the role of open innovation in balancing exploration and exploitation. Our study further elaborates on prior findings by demonstrating that strategic foresight, combined with knowledge management practices, not only strengthens knowledge exploration and exploitation but also fosters more effective new product development. ...

To remain competitive and make effective decisions in increasingly challenging markets, firms must integrate internal and external knowledge by embedding knowledge management strategies and technologies into their operations. This study aims to examine the roles of strategic foresight and knowledge management in promoting open innovation and driving new product development. Grounded in the knowledge-based view (KBV) of the firm, it investigates how strategic foresight influences open innovation processes and how knowledge management catalyzes innovation success. Using structural equation modelling (SEM) on data collected from 298 technology-based firms located in Lithuania (n = 142) and Slovakia (n = 156), the study demonstrates that strategic foresight directly impacts open innovation and significantly improves new product development through open innovation; in addition, knowledge exploration and exploitation are shown to play important roles in open innovation, with balanced effects on new product development outcomes. The study identifies open innovation as a critical mechanism that links strategic foresight and knowledge management to improve new product development, extending the KBV of the firm by highlighting the integration of external knowledge with internal processes, particularly in smaller, emerging economies. Practically, managers are recommended to prioritize foresight and balanced knowledge management practices while leveraging strategic alliances and networks to improve new product development outcomes. This integrated approach highlights the importance of collaborative innovation and external knowledge in achieving competitive advantage in dynamic business environments.
... Today's drivers of growth are based on the advances in technology and the constant innovation generated by companies, which is grounded in the proliferation of knowledge (Kabir, 2019). However, knowledge alone is not enough to create new emerging technologies, as this knowledge needs to be managed so that it can be harnessed to the best of its ability, and this is done through KM (Nascimento et al., 2021). By definition, KM is responsible for creating knowledge, managing the flow of knowledge present in an organization, and ensuring that it is used in the most efficient and effective way for the long-term benefit of the company (Lee et al., 2013). ...
... The dynamic interactions between the strategic side of a business, KM, and innovation have been thoroughly discussed in the previous literature (Nascimento et al., 2021). By introducing digital business strategy, digital platform capability, absorptive capacity and knowledge strategy, the proposed conceptual framework can assist companies seeking to leverage substantially completed and more consistent interactions with a view to achieving positive outcomes such as high innovation performance and sustainable competitive advantage. ...

This conceptual paper provides a theoretical framework for an emergent research trajectory that stems from the shared knowledge base of digital transformation and knowledge management theories. Through a narrative literature review, we propose a predictive theoretical model for empirical investigation, designed to guide a successful journey through digital transformation. In response to the recently emerging business needs associated with digital transformation, we elucidate the theoretical underpinnings and formulate research propositions. These are intended to generate practical knowledge with regard to the influence of digital business strategy on innovation performance. This influence is mediated by the digital platform capability within a knowledge management-operated context, which is predetermined by knowledge strategy and absorptive capacity. The theoretical and practical significance of this model resides in its potential to guide organizations in devising effective business strategies and cultivating essential dynamic capabilities. These are required to secure sustainable competitive advantages in the digital economy.

The development of green products in manufacturing enterprises is challenged by limited independent innovation capabilities and insufficient green technology. Based on knowledge-based theory, this study investigates the influence of boundary-spanning green technology search (BGTS) and technology integration capability (TIC) on green product development performance (GPDP). Using polynomial regression analysis with response surface methodology (PRA with RSM) on data from 341 companies, the following findings were obtained: (1) Higher levels of BGTS and TIC congruence are associated with higher GPDP compared to lower levels of congruence. (2) The degree of discrepancy between the BGTS and TIC has an inverted U-shaped relationship with GPDP. (3) GPDP is higher in the “low BGTS–high TIC” combination than in the “high BGTS–low TIC” combination. (4) Green technology innovation capability mediates the relationship between BGTS-TIC congruence and GPDP. (5) Strategic foresight positively moderates the relationship between the BGTS-TIC congruence and green technology innovation capability. These findings enrich the research content of organizational search theory, deepen the research of green technology innovation, expand research on the development of green products, and provide a decision-making reference for manufacturing enterprises’ green transition practices.

Systematizing corporate foresight and integrating it into decision-making is critical to harness its value. However , many companies face challenges due to limited legitimacy, leading to scarce resources and a lack of commitment. Previous research has paid little attention to various ways to develop foresight capability, particularly at the intermediate stage of foresight maturity, where legitimacy is often lacking. We address this issue by exploring alternative organizing models to demonstrate foresight's value within firms. We conceptualize a corporate foresight system (CFS) comprising structures, roles, and activities for managing futures knowledge. Through a multiple case study of eleven large companies with intermediate foresight maturity, we identify four legitimate CFS archetypes: function-driven, independent foresight unit, executive team-led, and platform-based models. Using 43 semi-structured interviews, a pre-questionnaire survey, and workshops, we characterize these archetypes, examine their strengths and weaknesses and identify 'windows of opportunity' for further legiti-mation by extending and refining an initial CFS. Theoretically, we develop the concept of CFS, identify four CFS archetypes for companies with intermediate foresight maturity, and discuss how they contribute to demonstrating foresight's value within firms. Practically, our findings provide guidance for managers seeking to develop foresight capability by identifying approaches to legitimize foresight within an organization.

In today's volatile, uncertain, complex, and ambiguous organizational landscape, effective leadership and management are pivotal for navigating challenges and seizing opportunities. This is especially crucial in agricultural research institutions in Kenya, tasked with enhancing productivity, sustainability, and food security. These institutions must innovate to address climate change, resource scarcity, and evolving consumer demands, yet face challenges in maintaining corporate efficiency. With global population growth and increasing food demand, there is urgency for these institutions to enhance strategic foresight and corporate efficiency. However, the impact of strategic foresight and leadership commitment on efficiency remains underexplored in Kenya's agricultural research sector. This study aimed to investigate the influence of strategic foresight on corporate efficiency and to explore how leadership commitment mediates this relationship. Utilizing a mixed methods approach—cross-sectional surveys for quantitative data and interpretive phenomenological analysis for qualitative insights—data were gathered from key segments of Kenyan agricultural research institutions. Statistical analyses, including regression and mediation analysis, were employed to test hypotheses and uncover relationships among strategic foresight, leadership commitment, and corporate efficiency. Results showed that the study achieved a robust response rate, ensuring reliable findings with strong internal consistency. Leadership in agricultural research institutes skewed male, revealing gender disparities. Age significantly influenced corporate efficiency, emphasizing strategic foresight's role. Concerns arose over short leader tenures and institutional memory loss. Supervisory roles correlated positively with corporate efficiency, consistent with prior research. Pearson's correlations showed significant relationships among corporate efficiency, strategic foresight, and leadership commitment. Structural equation modeling confirmed significant relationships, with leadership commitment partially mediating the relationship between strategic foresight and corporate efficiency. Management boards were pivotal in strategic activities and policy coordination. Despite policy alignment challenges in organizations, government support for policy enactment received positive feedback. The study recommended expansions into resource mobilization, patenting, and policy revisions aligning with digital agriculture trends. Effective governance, supportive policies, and strategic implementation were crucial for advancing agricultural research and development.

Small and medium enterprises (SMEs) in the construction sector play a pivotal role in any emerging market economy. These construction SMEs provide ancillary services to various industries, increase employment opportunities, and contribute to maintaining regional economic equilibrium. Technological innovations, particularly those based on artificial intelligence (AI), can significantly benefit SMEs by enhancing competitiveness and improving sustainability. However, the adoption of AI is slow among construction SMEs, and the factors that influence these enterprises’ adoption of AI-based technology are not well understood, creating a critical research gap. In this article, we present a theoretical model grounded in knowledge management theory and the unified theory of acceptance and use of technology to explore the factors that affect SMEs’ adoption of AI-based technology in developing countries. The data were collected from 422 construction SMEs, and structural equation modeling was employed to examine the hypotheses. The analysis of data collected from construction SMEs reveals that openness to innovation impacts perceived knowledge, which in turn influences performance expectations, ultimately affecting the adoption of AI-based technology in construction SMEs. Additionally, knowledge integration moderates the adoption and actual usage of AI-based technology.

Purpose Although the significance of technological progress in economic development is well-established in theory and policy, it has remained challenging to agree upon shared priorities for strategies and policies. This paper aims to develop a model of how policymakers can develop effective and easy to communicate strategies for science, technology and economic development. Design/methodology/approach By integrating insights from economic complexity, competitiveness and foresight literature, a replicable research framework for analysing the opportunities and challenges of technological revolutions for small catching-up countries is developed. The authors highlight key lessons from piloting this framework for informing the strategy and policies for bioeconomy in Estonia towards 2030–2050. Findings The integration of economic complexity research with traditional foresight methods establishes a solid analytical basis for a data-driven analysis of the opportunities for industrial upgrading. The increase in the importance of regional alliances in the global economy calls for further advancement of the analytical toolbox. Integration of complexity, global value chains and export potential assessment approaches offers valuable direction for further research, as it enables discussion of the opportunities of moving towards more knowledge-intensive economic activities along with the opportunities for winning international market share. Originality/value The research merges insights from the economic complexity, competitiveness and foresight literature in a novel way and illustrates the applicability and priority-setting in a real-life setting.

The economy of the region is a key link in the national economic system, and its sustainable development is achieved through increasing the level of economic security. The article aims to develop a methodological approach to assessing the level of economic security of the region. The objectives of the study are to improve and test a systemic assessment of the economic security of the region, taking into account the specific level of development of the main spheres of the economy in the contextof functional areas of activity. The article used economic and statistical methods, methods of comparison and analogies. The study systematizes and identifies the limitations of existing approaches to assessing the level of economic security. It also notes the lack of universality of the widely used index method, and the insufficiency of methods for correctly taking into account the dynamics of regional economic development. The paper proposes an improved approach assessing the total level of economic security of the region, identifying the functional areas of development and specifying the system of calculation indicators, establishing the feasibility of using standardization of the indicators used. Attention has also been focused on positioning the calculation results in the context of a scale of “threshold” values, and the need for a comprehensive assessment system related not only to the size of the gross regional product. The proposed methodological approach was tested using the example of federal subjects of the Ural Federal District, and it was established that there is a need to update measures to increase the level of their economic security. General practical recommendations are given to increase the level of regional development as the foundation for the region’s sustainability.

Priority development of education is the fundamental guarantee for the construction of high-level talent highlands. Technological self-reliance and self-improvement are strategic support for the construction of high-level talent highlands, and talent innovation guidance is the intrinsic driving force for the construction of high-level talent highlands. The construction of a high-level talent highland in the Guangdong Hong Kong Macao Greater Bay Area requires the integration of innovative elements that connect the “education chain, technology chain, and talent chain”. It is necessary to build a three-dimensional integrated spatial architecture of “education technology talent”. We need to build a community that integrates “education highland, technology highland, and talent highland”. Accelerating the construction of high-level talent highlands in the Guangdong Hong Kong Macao Greater Bay Area requires the construction of a highland for scientific and technological innovation talents, a highland for technical and skilled talents, and a highland for scientific and technological finance talents. Based on this, this article selected 399 listed high-tech enterprises in the Greater Bay Area as the research objects, and conducted multiple regression on the relevant data of sample enterprises from the perspective of property rights heterogeneity from 2018 to 2021 to reveal which open innovation model can effectively solve specific situational problems faced by enterprises. The multi role matching mechanism can effectively improve the performance of new product development and its market competitive advantage of enterprises, as well as how the nature of property rights affects the relationship between open innovation strategies and new product development performance of enterprises. The research results show that, firstly, open innovation between enterprises is beneficial for the precise improvement of product development performance by high-level talents in enterprises. Secondly, open innovation in industry, academia, and research is beneficial for improving talent performance in enterprises, but its effect is weaker than that of open innovation between enterprises. Enterprises focus more on the open innovation model between enterprises.

This paper addresses the critical importance of strategic foresight and offers guidance on how to evaluate its implementation. Strategic foresight is defined by three types of thinking (future, system, and exponential), and the key elements of horizon scanning and scenario planning. As chief executive officers (CEOs) express concerns about their companies’ future viability and adaptability to industry changes, strategic foresight emerges as a vital capability. Its structured yet open approach enables the identification and exploration of emerging challenges and opportunities, informing decision-making in uncertain contexts. Effective implementation of strategic foresight entails adopting forward-thinking. horizon scanning, and scenario planning. Scenario planning explores potential futures, while horizon scanning assesses megatrends, weak signals, wild cards, and uncertainties. This paper extends the literature and provides fresh perspectives on how companies can use strategic foresight to identify and address the challenges and opportunities posed by generative artificial intelligence (AI). In particular, the paper emphasizes the ethical dimensions of foresight in the AI context. Drawing insight from the Global Summit on Generative AI (held in San Francisco in April 2023) this paper presents a set of ethical recommendations for effectively navigating AI complexities, including strategies such as red teaming, watermarking, and sandboxing (Li et al., 2023). By cultivating foresight, companies can address emerging trends, navigate uncertainties, mitigate risks, engage their workforce, seek new opportunities, and foster sustainable growth. Hence, it is crucial for the board of directors (BoD) and management to recognize the strategic importance of foresight within the organization and across business sectors.

The importance of social knowledge in the theory and practice of international construction engineering is growing, yet related contract failures are still frequent to date, and much less is known about the inner content of social knowledge and how to realize its full potential in international projects. Therefore, this study attempts to demonstrate the internal structure of social knowledge in the context of the current intercultural era to enhance the development of international construction engineering. Considering the commonalities between the social knowledge iceberg and the liquid crystal, the study regarded liquid crystal as a metaphor for the social knowledge iceberg and embodies the flow path of social knowledge from internal formations to external effects. A multiple case study was used to verify the proposed metaphorical model and visualize the internal structure of social knowledge. We find that cross-cultural leadership, which determines the stability of the social knowledge iceberg by adjusting the degree of cultural integration within the range of 20–40% and thereby promoting the catalytic effect of social knowledge for contract completion, is the core of social knowledge creation. This paper theoretically explores the structure, influencing factors, and functions of social knowledge stability and, in the meantime in practice, provides guidance for the success of international construction engineering by combing knowledge management and chemistry theory.
... Knowledge management (KM) research has received much attention in the past 20 years (Chaudhuri et al., 2020;Usai et al., 2018) and has emerged as an interdisciplinary field that weaves together a wide and varied range of domains and industries (Boisot, 1998;Del Giudice and Maggioni, 2014;Edvinsson, 1997;Nonaka, 1994;Roos and Roos, 1997;Wenger, 1999). This resulted in the development of various models and frameworks (Intezari et al., 2021) since KM is becoming a critical survival factor for companies operating in all kinds of industries, especially in today's dynamic global business environment (Ardito et al., 2021;Cerchione et al., 2020;da Silva Nascimento et al., 2020;Del Giudice et al., 2017;Dezi et al., 2021). ...

Purpose This paper aims to conduct a tertiary review to analyse the state of the art of literature reviews on knowledge management (KM) published in academic journals and provide an overview of their evolution. From 2000 to 2022, about 500 reviews have been published in the KM field, with most systematic studies compared to bibliometric or meta-analytic studies, and an absence of previous tertiary studies. Therefore, given the lack of previous tertiary research, this paper provides a complete picture of the evolution of review topics in the past and presents implications for both researchers and practitioners. Design/methodology/approach A classification scheme was defined to cluster and evaluate the literature reviews, both in terms of methodological approach and content. Regarding the content, the various secondary papers were classified according to the purpose of the research (state of the art, taxonomy, research agenda and research framework), the unit of analysis (small and medium enterprise, large company, start-up and university), the KM models adopted and the thematic areas addressed. Furthermore, a tertiary review methodology was identified integrating two main approaches: a bibliometric approach for cluster identification and a systematic approach for the discussion. Findings Two categories of contributions emerge from the results: those concerning research topics that have found a continuous interest over time and those that have not yet found a constant research interest. This latter aspect is relevant to help researchers conduct future literature analysis in KM research to bridge existing research gaps. Research limitations/implications This paper provides a unique compendium of search directions to offer a comprehensive overview of the scientific debate about KM. This overview can also be used as a managerial panacea to identify best KM practice guidelines from existing reviews. Originality/value This is a unique attempt to conduct a tertiary study on KM for more than two decades by providing insights into the structural body of knowledge through academic progress in the subject of KM. Thus, this study expands the field of KM and provides original approaches for research in the field.

This study explores knowledge sharing in temporary teams which use 3D printing technology to support surgical interventions. We focus on the planning phase of orthopaedic surgeries when senior surgeons organise a temporary team to create personalised treatment using 3D printing technology. We conduct in-depth interviews with 25 surgeons and their teams in one of the leading orthopaedic research hospitals in Italy. Based on our qualitative evidence, we find that when the technology provides a basis for the surgical planning, knowledge sharing in teams mostly occurs through two-way – dyadic – relationships between team participants. Our findings also demonstrate that hierarchy within teams is important to support the formation of dyads thereby facilitating knowledge sharing practices within temporary teams. This study is novel in highlighting how temporary teams deal with knowledge sharing challenges due to the continuous changes in team composition in healthcare.

Purpose: The present study aimed to examine the mediating effect that dynamic capabilities may have on the relationship between strategic foresight and strategic renewal. Design/methodology/ approach: The present study relied on quantitative and qualitative methods. More specifically, the authors used a cross-sectional design and survey strategy. Three hundred and three participants were selected randomly from four Islamic banks operating in Jordan completed the study questionnaire. A structural equation modeling technique was employed to test the study hypotheses by using SmartPLS 3 software package. Findings: The results demonstrated that strategic foresight and dynamic capabilities have a significant and positive effect on strategic renewal. Also, the results illustrated that the dynamic capabilities have a partial mediating effect on the relationship between strategic foresight and strategic renewal. Research limitations: The results of the present study relate to Islamic banks in Jordan; hence the ability to generalize the findings to other sectors is limited. Another limitation is respondent bias because the study design relies heavily on the participants’ perceptions. Practical implementation: Used properly, strategic foresight allows managers to see how events in the external environment influence their organizations’ performance. Thus, managers can use strategic foresight for making corrections in plans, policies, strategies, and objectives to get performance back on track using their organizations’ dynamic capabilities. Originality: Despite the amount of research and studies that have been devoted to understanding strategic foresight, dynamic capabilities, and strategic renewal over the last decades, the relationship between these three constructs has never been studied collectively. Therefore, the present study fills this gap in the literature.

The Fourth Industrial Revolution is causing considerable changes to the world of work. The interaction between technology and work, which takes many forms such as digitalization, automation, and augmentation, is happening quickly and broadly, impacting economic sectors left almost untouched by previous industrial revolutions. In this scenario, Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) must be able to foresee changes to prepare future professionals to match the needs of this new digital age. The professionals that are being prepared today need to learn a new set of skills related to emerging and disruptive technologies, such as Artificial Intelligence, the Internet of Things, and Big Data. In this paper, we propose a Knowledge Management model to help manage the HEIs’ teaching staff knowledge about the future of work, specifically, the expected skills and competencies to be highly demanded from professionals in the future. Therefore, we performed a brief review of related work about Knowledge Management in the context of HEIs, Management of Future-oriented Knowledge, and the application of the Delphi method to studies concerning the Future of Work. Considering this previous work, we propose a Knowledge Management model that combines the European Foundation for Quality Management (EFQM) Excellence Model framework with a Delphi process that is used during the Knowledge Generation step of the Knowledge Management process. The proposed model considers that professors are experts in their areas of concentration and, as such, are capable of helping their HEIs with their knowledge that can be used to improve the courses’ curricula. The model also considers that HEIs can help professors make this knowledge explicit, then store, transfer, and apply it. We provide detailed information about how to apply the model, how to deal with potential application problems and the model limitations. The proposed Knowledge Management model can help HEIs to keep up with the trends of demands of the labor market.

The article considers the phenomenon of cross-border academic mobility in the context of Chinese predictive practice. By applying historical-philosophical, comparative and hermeneutic methods, the authors analyze three problem areas: the social ideal, forecasting the future, and national education in China – and make the following conclusions. The “prior knowledge” that came from the culture of Imperial China can be used as an element of modern prognostics, and the traditional project of the “Great Unity” society (the “Datong” society in the Confucian concept of the social ideal) is transformed into a national foresight project. At the same time, the idea of unified humankind is not exclusively Chinese but has deep historical roots and universal nature. Being cautious about the supranational extrapolation of this idea, modern China, nevertheless, is expanding international cooperation and strengthening international contacts, using cross-border academic mobility as one of the tools of “soft power”.
... In essence, these technological systems acting as enablers support firms' capacity to perform complex quantitative and qualitative data analysis, and advance their modelling processes (Keller & Heiko, 2014;Heiko et al., 2015). In turn, this enables contextual identification of environmental uncertainties in the present and from the future allowing systematic identification of opportunities and threats (da Silva Nascimento, Reichert, Janissek-Muniz, & Zawislak, 2020). In other words, these systems provide a "platform for information exchange and creation, collaboration, analyses and assessments…[that] should enable a general but also solution-oriented foresight process to examine short and longterm developments and scenarios" (Heiko et al., 2015, p. 2). ...

Corporate foresight (CF) has received increasing attention from scholars and practitioners alike. Due to the increasing environmental complexity and unpredictability that the corporate world is encountering, companies from various sectors have realized the need to engage in CF to mitigate uncertainty. However, current research on the topic remains fragmented and lacks conceptual connection. This study, therefore, aims to examine the extant CF research and provides a systematic insight into its key components. Through a narrative synthesis of a sample comprising 73 articles published over the last two decades in leading business and management journals, we developed an integrative framework that maps the key elements underpinning CF literature (including antecedents, tools/activities, moderators, technology, and outcomes) and explicates their interplay. We also highlighted the bidirectional effect of technology, as a distinct construct, across CF elements, and discussed the need to identify technology-related boundary conditions that may influence the manifestation of CF outcomes. Moreover, we utilized the developed framework as a platform to identify critical gaps in the CF research and suggest related future research trajectories.

Due to the speed and uncertainty of environmental changes, firms become less confident in the effectiveness of planning that is based on previous experience and assumptions. Instead, executives started to recognize that business decisions should not only be driven by past data, but also be based on systematic evaluation of possible forthcoming trends by constantly scanning for and interpreting discontinuities in the external environment. Corporate foresight can be defined as the desire of the company to understand futures for the long-term interests of the company. This article was written with the aim of a systematic review of corporate foresight literature between 2006 and 2022. The systematic review of corporate foresight literature includes the scientific research works of countries, the distribution of articles based on the year of publication, journals, authors, the number of citations to the journals and researchers and classified from the prospective of methodology. The findings show that the subject of corporate foresight has received more attention over time, and researchers can use different theoretical and methodological approaches to investigate corporate foresight and cover the research gap.

The Future of Science and Technology (S&T) is a continuous and strategic topic for governments, universities, and organizations, with benefits to society, in terms of innovation, sustainability, and development. There is a gap and opportunity for research on architectures for Anticipatory Governance (AG) integrating Scientific Foresight (ScF) and S&T Policies Design in the context of the Brazilian Government, including federal and state level. Given this landscape, this paper, which is connected to a Research Project, aims to advance into the understanding of the theoretical dimensions necessary for integrating research on the themes of AG, ScF and S&T Public Policies Design, in order to propose an emergent framework. Adopting an SRL, the analysis evidenced seven theoretical dimensions that converge these three themes and provide further advancement into the possibilities of integrated research. Moreover, analysis supported the proposition of a first version of an emergent framework of Anticipatory Governance, Scientific Foresight and Sustainable S&T Public Policies Design consisting of building blocks for further testing and advancement. Implications for addressing AG as an institutional innovation on public management are discussed, and the artifact evolution can greatly contribute to impact and improve complex decision-making on public policies and investments in strategic fields of S&T.

Purpose This paper aims to explore the effects of two drivers, namely, the received fundings and its interaction with the specialized competences owned by the managerial board, on the R&D activities performed by start-ups. Design/methodology/approach This paper tests hypotheses on a sample of 405 innovative start-ups established in Italy and registered into the Chamber of Commerce official database. This study uses the R&D expenses as a measure of the innovative performance of start-up, and the authors also collected the number and total amount of grants received by them and the presence of high qualified team in their management board. Findings The analysis reveals that both the number and total amount of grants received by start-ups positively impact the innovative performance. The same is for the integration of the total amount of grants with the presence of high qualified team in the management board. Research limitations/implications This study did not distinguish between different types of grants adopted by start-ups, while it would be interesting to study whether any difference does exist among them in terms of their influence on innovative performance. Also, this paper considers the total number of specialized people in the team while it would certainly be interesting to analyze people’s background and competences in relation to the innovative performances. Practical implications This paper allows us to offer some provisional conclusions such as having funds in the preliminary phase of start-up life cycle, and investments mainly for R&D expenses. The start-up must also leverage its skills and therefore it is necessary to invest in human capital. Social implications Findings suggest that policymakers should introduce integrated measures to support start-ups throughout the entire life cycle, from the creation of the idea to incubation up to industrial consolidation. Originality/value This paper focuses on the determinants of start-up innovative performance because both external (such as political, economic, social and technological) and internal (such as organizational) influencing factors have to be considered as crucial for start-ups innovation and growth. Finally, this study is one of the few attempts exploring the phenomenon by using an empirical methodology based on real and certificated data.

Incorporating foresight practices into the innovation process is relevant to enhance the competitiveness of companies in dynamic and complex environments. From a systematic literature review, this paper maps three roles that foresight assumes when associated with innovation and that help leverage the innovativeness of firms: the informational role concerns monitoring weak signals that indicate future developments; the facilitation role concerns using prospective tools that stimulate collective visions of the future; and the strategic influence role deals with recommendations that support decision-making. From these roles, an integrative framework is proposed to explain the relationships among the constructs researched and that can serve as a model to be tested in the future. This study aims to present foresight practices that can leverage the innovativeness of organisations and contribute to the development of the theory that still lacks depth in relation to the impact of foresight on innovation.

Foresight is the key for the economy, the business environment, and by extension society and politics to face various risks under conditions of uncertainty, which is becoming the norm as we progress through the 21st century. This paper proposes a wealth-based income tax model with an obligatory electronic transaction legal framework to advance fiscal knowledge management in Greek government. The research was conducted using an online questionnaire that was distributed to Greek tax payers via the snowball method. Linear regression was used to examine the associations between the variables. The research results provide insight into the factors driving the enhancement of tax revenue collection via artificial intelligence software after the widespread adoption of e-transactions. A fiscal tax e-payment reform policy based on an artificially intelligent tax foresight model succeeds in reducing income disparities caused by overtaxing honest taxpayers, thereby shrinking the shadow economy. With the widespread adoption of e-payments and complete digitization of financial transactions, the results of this study can serve as a foundation for the advancement of fiscal knowledge management and compliance with tax behavior. This study emphasizes the importance of planning ahead for taxes and coordinating information in order to reform fiscal policy for the better.

This paper aims to discover key performance indicators (KPIs) influencing digital skill transformation in global IT service firms, reveal its unique features, and assert the effect of these KPIs on firms’ digital skill transformation and knowledge management initiatives. This research is mainly based on primary data. The researcher started data collection by conducting a Focused Group Discussion (FGD) with subject matter experts (SMEs), followed by in-depth personal interviews with the key organisational individuals. Then, a primary survey is carried out using a qualitative questionnaire across all the existing employees of the largest business unit of a global IT service firm. Findings suggest that Total IT Experience (EXP), Reading Time (RT), Effective Mentoring (EM), and Training Effectiveness (TE) primarily impact employees’ digital skill transformation. Besides, the technical capability and understanding of existing employees’ supervisors or managers directly correlate with the project environment, which in turn impact employees’ effectiveness during their digital skill transformation journey.

In the culture of the old imperial China, the phenomenon of prognostics was raised to a certain cult. The ancient Chinese believed that in everyday activities, knowledge can be revealed to the world, but in predictive practice, pre-knowledge is always hidden. Pre-knowledge has also found its niche in modern prognostics, which implements high international standards. The contribution considers some specific features of the Chinese phenomenon “pre-knowledge” in the context of the world experience of using foresight. In the course of this research, such classical theoretical philosophical methods as the method of generalization, analogy, abstraction, analysis and synthesis were used. The authors also applied logical-epistemological analysis to enter and interpret the concepts necessary for the study. During the analysis of modern Chinese foresight projects, it is shown that the state foresight of China includes elements from not only the model of Japanese foresight, which grew out of the classic American one, but also traditional knowledge. It is concluded that the phenomenon of “pre-knowledge” will find its special place in the study of the digital future of our society. KeywordsChinaDigitalizationForesightForecastingPre-knowledge

In order to effectively utilize energy of agricultural biomass, there is a need to evaluate energy potential. For such a purpose, chemical exergy and standard entropy of typical agricultural biomass were examined analytically. Element compositions of the exergy and entropy were acquired for further statistical evaluation. Adaptive neuro fuzzy inference system (ANFIS) was used as the statistical methodology for data analyzing. ANFIS is an efficient estimation model among machine learning techniques. The main weakness of the ANFIS is its dimensionality problem with large inputs. Therefore, the main goal in this study was to estimate the parameters’ influence on the chemical exergy and standard entropy prediction in order to reduce the number of inputs. Principal component analysis was used for presentation of the obtained ANFIS predictive models. Obtained results have shown the best predictive performances for standard entropy based on hydrogen as composite element of the agricultural biomass. Exergy prediction was the best for oxygen as composite element of the agricultural biomass. ANFIS coefficient of determination for standard entropy prediction based on hydrogen is 0.9832 and for chemical exergy prediction is 0.919. The results show the high predictive accuracy of ANFIS models.

In this article, we argue that integrative literature reviews are among the most useful vehicles for advancing knowledge and furthering research in a topic domain. Integrative literature reviews are strongly anchored in a representative description of a field, but add new insights via a critical analysis and synthesis of the field’s literature. Based on this definition, we explicate the ways that scholars can (1) define the ‘space’ for an integrative review (i.e., how they can justify and bound an integrative review), and (2) synthesize insights gained from the review to develop a new perspective or point of view on the literature. We illustrate these points with several of the most highly‐cited manuscripts published in the Academy of Management Annals. Finally, we close by arguing why these points make integrative reviews most useful for advancing knowledge and furthering research in the area of management.

As a powerful means of theory building, conceptual articles are increasingly called for in marketing academia. However, researchers struggle to design and write non-empirical articles because of the lack of commonly accepted templates to guide their development. The aim of this paper is to highlight methodological considerations for conceptual papers: it is argued that such papers must be grounded in a clear research design, and that the choice of theories and their role in the analysis must be explicated and justified. The paper discusses four potential templates for conceptual papers – Theory Synthesis, Theory Adaptation, Typology, and Model – and their respective aims, approach for using theories, and contribution potential. Supported by illustrative examples, these templates codify some of the tacit knowledge that underpins the design of non-empirical papers and will be of use to anyone undertaking, supervising, or reviewing conceptual research.

On the occasion of the 50th anniversary of Technology Forecasting & Social Change, we review the evolution of corporate and organizational foresight within the journal and look ahead to the coming decade. We apply a systematic literature review process to identify the major contributions in this area of foresight theory and practice covering five decades, and present a thematic summary of these articles. We reveal the concerns of authors as they have sought to apply foresight in corporations, organizations, and institutions, how they have attempted to resolve them, and the progress they have made. We discuss how these authors have cumulatively defined and evolved this portion of the strategic foresight field, from integrating technology with market forecasting to expanding forecast approaches to include multiple futures, to the integration of foresight to create agile and adaptive organizations. We use this as a base for discussing current priorities and future challenges in corporate and organizational foresight, and suggest three trajectories for further research: a) further advancing organizational foresight practices, b) connecting organizational foresight to strategy practice and theory, c) connecting organizational foresight to innovation, engineering, and R&D management practices and theory.

In turbulent and competitive scenarios, strategic intelligence is a crucial process for organizations to reduce uncertainties during decision-making and to anticipate changes that may affect their performance and sustainability. Despite the relevance of the activity, continuous and structured processes based on intelligence in organizations are not a reality due to the difficulty of implementing and formalizing it. Executing a diagnosis to evaluate conditions that precede the adoption of a structured intelligence activity allows companies to recognize their efficiency to perform monitoring, to further improve or implement it. This paper explores organizational, informational, individual, technological and material conditions that precede the adoption of the intelligence process, reviews six diagnostic models and proposes a diagnostic tool to evaluate issues that must be considered in advance. The Delphi method was used to exploit opinions among 30 intelligence practitioners in order to define which conditions of the process should be evaluated before its adoption in companies. As a result, this work contributes to filling the gap observed in the literature about the motivation to initiate the intelligence process in organizations and presents a formalized tool to evaluate its pre-adoption stage.

Investments in emerging technologies and the development of related emerging innovations are necessary to compete in the long term. The market entry timing plays an important role in generating decisive competitive advantages over competitors through investments in emerging innovations. Different market entry strategies offer varied opportunities and risks, which firms must take into account when choosing the optimal time to enter the market. This study develops an optimisation model to make an economically appropriate ex-ante decision in this choice by accounting for several relevant factors and weighing up possible opportunities and risks of the chosen market entry strategy. The evaluation of the simulation results shows that the considered factors influence the optimal market entry to varying extents and that both early and late market entry can be advantageous for companies.

Industry 4.0 is considered a new industrial stage in which vertical and horizontal manufacturing processes integration and product connectivity can help companies to achieve higher industrial performance. However, little is known about how industries see the potential contribution of the Industry 4.0 related technologies for industrial performance, especially in emerging countries. Based on the use of secondary data from a large-scale survey of 27 industrial sectors representing 2,225 companies of the Brazilian industry, we studied how the adoption of different Industry 4.0 technologies is associated with expected benefits for product, operations and side-effects aspects. Using regression analysis, we show that some of the Industry 4.0 technologies are seen as promising for industrial performance while some of the emerging technologies are not, which contraries the conventional wisdom. We discuss the contextual conditions of the Brazilian industry that may require a partial implementation of the Industry 4.0 concepts created in developed countries. We summarize our findings in a framework, that shows the perception of Brazilian industries of Industry 4.0 technologies and their relations with the expected benefits. Thus, this work contributes by discussing the real expectations on the future performance of the industry when implementing new technologies, providing a background to advance in the research on real benefits of the Industry 4.0.

Purpose Under current market conditions of corporate foresight, turbulence is a key element of the business landscape. Turbulence can be summarised using the trendy managerial acronym ‘VUCA’: Volatility, uncertainty, complexity, and ambiguity. This paper combines, for the first time, scientific discussion of technological disruption with the VUCA approach. Gart-ner Hype Cycle is used as a case example of technological turbulence and “vucability”. . Design/methodology/approach Firstly, authors present key concepts of technological disruption and radical innovation. Both these concepts are highly relevant for modern corporate foresight. Secondly, authors discuss key elements of current technological transformation and summarise it to create a bigger picture. Thirdly, authors link this discussion to the VUCA approach. Fourthly, au-thors present the new corporate foresight framework, which is highly relevant for corpo-rations and takes current technological transformation more seriously than previous pro-posals, which expect more stable business and a technological landscape. Findings Key issues in modern VUCA management are agility (response to volatility), information and knowledge management (response to uncertainty), restructuring (response to com-plexity) and experimentation (response to ambiguity). Useful foresight tools are: challeng-ing tools, decision making tools, aligning tools, learning tools and the ability to combine these management tools in the practices of corporate foresight and management systems. The VUCA approach is a key solution concept to technological disruption. Practical implications Authors present the new corporate foresight framework and management tool based on foresight, which help leaders to manage volatility, uncertainty, complexity and ambiguity - especially under the conditions of hyper-competition and technological disruption. Originality/value Corporate leaders should reinvent the strategic planning framework and adjust it to the VUCA conditions and simply be more strategic. Traps and typical failures of foresight are: (1) adopting it too early, (2) giving up too soon, (3) adapting too late, and (4) hang-ing on too long. In particular, technological transformation with disruptive technologies is changing and challenging many basic assumptions of business management and strategic planning. Our comparative analysis with Gartner Hype Cycle (fast technological changes from 2008-2016) verifies this important aspect of technological disruption.

Corporate foresight is applied with the expectation that it will help firms to break away from path dependency, help decision makers to define superior courses of action, and ultimately enable superior firm performance. To empirically test this assumption, we developed a model that judges a firm's future preparedness (FP) by assessing the need for corporate foresight (CF) and comparing it to the maturity of its CF practices. We apply a longitudinal research design in which we measure future preparedness in 2008 and its impact on firm performance in 2015. The results indicated future preparedness to be a powerful predictor for becoming an outperformer in the industry, for attaining superior profitability, and for gaining superior market capitalization growth. In the article, we also calculate the average bonus/discount that can be expected by sufficiently/insufficiently future-prepared firms. Keywords: corporate foresight, future preparedness, firm performance, behavioural theory of the firm Highlights • We developed a model for assessing the future preparedness of a firm. • We assessed future preparedness by comparing the need for and the maturity of corporate foresight practices. • We found that future-prepared firms (vigilant) outperformed the average by a 33% higher profitability and by a 200% higher market capitalization growth. • Conversely, firms that had deficiencies in their future preparedness were faced with a performance discount of 37% to 108%.

Strategic foresight among middle managers is crucial, considering their responsibilities and authority vested in them in directing everyday organising. Emphasising practices as the locus of strategic foresight, we argue that imposed organising processes and bureaucratic routines may interact to dissipate the cultivation of strategic foresight among middle managers in their situated practice. Building on an explorative case analysis of a European sportswear retail company, our study highlights how top-down changes in organising processes may induce the dissipation of organisational ‘foresightfulness’. We identify four dimensions emphasised by the new organising processes and their associated routines (rhetoric of legitimation, instrumental rationality, suppression of creative freedom, and the formulations of solutions in search of problems) which typify the observed patterns of foresight dissipation among middle managers. The study and its findings extend our understanding of contextual antecedents that could lead to the dissipation of strategic foresight among middle managers in organizing.

This paper proposes a conceptual model in which a human resource management (HRM) system of explicitly knowledge-based HRM practices impacts a firm's intellectual capital, producing higher innovation performance. We have empirically tested this idea in a survey dataset of 180 Spanish companies using structural equation modelling (SEM) based on partial least squares (PLS). The results show that intellectual capital positively mediates the relationship between knowledge-based HRM practices and innovation performance and illustrate the pivotal role of human capital in this relationship: knowledge-based HRM practices impact structural and relational capital partially through human capital, and human capital affects innovation performance by enhancing structural and relational capital.

Innovation and dynamic capabilities have gained considerable attention in both academia and practice. While one of the oldest inquiries in economic and strategy literature involves understanding the features that drive business success and a firm’s perpetuity, the literature still lacks a comprehensive model of innovation and dynamic capabilities. This study presents a model that assesses firms’ innovation and dynamic capabilities perspectives based on four essential capabilities: development, operations, management, and transaction capabilities. Data from a survey of 1,107 Brazilian manufacturing firms were used for empirical testing and discussion of the dynamic capabilities framework. Regression and factor analyses validated the model; we discuss the results, contrasting with the dynamic capabilities’ framework. Operations Capability is the least dynamic of all capabilities, with the least influence on innovation. This reinforces the notion that operations capabilities as “ordinary capabilities,” whereas management, development, and transaction capabilities better explain firms’ dynamics and innovation.

We examine to what extent successful business-development activities in uncertain environments can be classified as corporate foresight (CF) and to what extent they have been intentional and systematic. Beginning with identifying successful cases of new-business development in Bottom of the Pyramid markets, we use various data sources to reconstruct timelines and map CF activities. We selected the cases to maximise their heterogeneity in firm size, industry, nature of the product and ownership structure. Our findings suggest that the probing (experimental search) phase is particularly important in unknown and uncertain environments but that perceiving and prospecting (cognitive search) activities are necessary to find distant opportunities. In addition, we find that successful business-development activities rely on multiple iterations between perceiving, prospecting and probing. Our findings emphasize that CF should include activities that encompass both experimental and cognitive search elements.

This article, together with a companion video, provides a synthesized summary of a Showcase Symposium held at the 2016 Academy of Management Annual Meeting in which prominent scholars—Denny Gioia, Kathy Eisenhardt, Ann Langley and Kevin Corley—discussed different approaches to theory building with qualitative research. Our goal for the symposium was to increase management scholars’ sensitivity to the importance of theory-method “fit” in qualitative research. We have integrated the panelists’ prepared remarks and interactive discussion into three sections: an introduction by each scholar, who articulates their own approach to qualitative research; their personal reflections on the similarities and differences between approaches to qualitative research, and answers to general questions posed by the audience during the symposium. We conclude by summarizing insights gleaned from the symposium about important distinctions among these three qualitative research approaches and their appropriate usages. Strategic foresight is a scientific field in rapid development judged from the increase in number of yearly publications the last decade. What characterizes the research in this field? To answer this question we undertook a systematic literature review searching two library databases, Business Source Complete and ScienceDirect, for scientific articles related to the topic ´strategic foresight´ in the context of the organization. The search revealed 59 publications published between January 2000 and October 2014. The articles were systematically organized and analyzed. This review provides the status of this emergent research field. Although we witness a growth of academic interest in strategic foresight, we argue that this scientific field is weakly organized and there is a lack of theoretical progress. We have analyzed the research subjects addressed in the 59 articles, and from this a taxonomy of eight categories. Three categories dominate in terms of frequency of articles: methods applied, organizing practices, and experiences gained. There is only limited research on motivation and use, value contribution, and innovation. Explorative research dominates, and a variety of theoretical perspectives has been used. Some attempts to build conceptual foundations can be observed, but in general, we found no single perspective that deserves loyalty on which a coherent theoretical foundation of strategic foresight is built. Strategic foresight has a great potential of contributing more to the success of a firm if the research moves from today's dominating explorative research to also include more explanatory research.

This article explores whether old, incumbent industries can prevent new, green industries from emerging by studying the rise and fall of the Norwegian advanced biofuel sector. It investigates three competing explanations that have been proposed to account for why Norway failed to develop a vibrant industry within this field: (i) the petroleum industry acquired all available risk capital, (ii) the petroleum industry captured all relevant technological expertise and (iii) the government failed to provide adequate incentives and support measures. The article applies a qualitative event-history analysis to chart the development of the most important Norwegian advanced biofuel companies – Borregaard (bioethanol), Cambi (biogas), Weyland (bioethanol) and Xynergo (biodiesel) – and uses their success and eventual failure as a key indicator of the condition of the emerging technological innovation system within this field. The article finds that the advanced biofuel companies were hampered mostly by inconsistent and unpredictable government incentives, and concludes that the third explanation best accounts for Norway's limited success in advanced biofuels.

Reference evapotranspiration (ET0) is considered and one of the most valuable parameter for hydrological, climatological investigation and water resources management as well. In this article the evapotranspiration was determined with the simplified equation of Makkink. There is need for precise approximation of the reference crop evapotranspiration in order to determine the water requirement in irrigated agriculture. However ET0 estimation is very difficult to achieve due to too many input parameters. Therefore the primary objective of the research was to establish regression models of the ET0 in regard to several input weather parameters. The regression models will be created by input/output data pairs. The main aim is to achieve predictive capable models for the ET0. Also according to the regression models precision one can determine the input parameters influence on the ET0. Hence one king of ranking process will be performed in order to select which factors have the most influence on the ET0. The repression models will be created by neuro fuzzy logic procedure since the procedure could handle high nonlinearity between input and output data pairs. According to the results Global radiation has the strongest influence on the ET0. Combination of Daily average temperature and Global radiation is the optimal combination for the ET0 estimation.

Research on innovation in tourism is fragmented and confined to traditional paradigms. This critical review paper, which cross-fertilises and discusses the relevant literature in tourism and other theoretical domains, proposes an integrative theoretical framework of innovation in destinations. The paper identifies four emerging innovations-experience co-creation, smart destinations, e-participative governance and social innovation-as evolutionary, knowledge-driven phenomena that are generated by the interaction among four destination actors and facilitated by information and communication technologies (ICTs) and social capital. The discussion and conclusion present some theoretical advances as follows: local contexts matter in destination innovation when assuming a repository role of spatial and cross-sectorial knowledge; social capital and ICT infrastructures facilitate innovativeness and stakeholder engagement; and emerging innovations are pervasive and the holistic results of the collective knowledge of four destination actors and are facilitated by ICT and social capital. The paper offers avenues for future research and challenges that should be explored by academics, policy makers and destination managers.

Purpose This paper aims to provide a strategic analysis of firms at the lowest hierarchical levels of the defence industry. Design/methodology/approach This paper presents the main results of an exploratory, multiple-case study that analyses the current strategy drivers and their views about the future ones, and their impact at the lowest hierarchical levels of the defence industry in Spain. Findings This investigation develops and analyses a contingency model regarding the strategy impact and effects of firms’ drivers and clients, both mediated by the strategy players because of their huge impact on the defence industry. The research model focuses on the internal relations between technical and commercial activities due to the cause and effect of their capabilities. Simultaneously, pull and push mechanisms boost firms’ capabilities and requirements to provide strategic foresight. Practical implications Ministries of Defence (MoDs) and prime contractors will remain mediating players in the near future even with further implications for the competition of Defence Technological and Industrial Base (DTIB) firms. It implies that firms and MoDs must maintain a close relation and implement more flexible practices, such as open innovation, property rights or new commercialization schemes. Originality/value This study offers insights related to the specific applications and the necessity of commercial and technological areas alignment of these firms for the future.

Providing drinking water with safe arsenic levels in Latin American (LA) countries (a total of 22 countries) is a major current challenge. Arsenic's presence in water has been neglected for many decades since it was first reported ~100 years ago in Argentina. The major arsenic source in this region is geogenic. So far, arsenic has been reported in 15 LA countries. Arsenic concentrations in drinking water have been reported up to >200 fold (2000 μg/L) the WHO limit of 10 μg/L. About 14 million people in the arsenic affected LA countries depend on contaminated water characterized by >10 μg/L of arsenic. Low-cost, easy to use, efficient, and sustainable solutions are needed to supply arsenic safe water to the rural and peri-urban population in the affected areas. In the present study, >250 research articles published on various emerging technologies used for arsenic remediation in rural and peri-urban areas of LA countries are critically reviewed. Special attention has been given to arsenic adsorption methods. The manuscript focuses on providing insights into low cost emergent adsorbents with an implementation potential in Latin America. Natural, modified and synthetic adsorbents used for arsenic decontamination were reviewed and compared. Advantages and disadvantages of treatment methods are summarized. Adsorbent selection criteria are developed. Recommendations concerning emerging adsorbents for aqueous arsenic removal in LA countries have also been made.

Understanding changing consumer needs is crucial for a company's survival. Particularly in the context of vehicle autonomy, customer insights lay a significant foundation for strategic decision-making of organizations in the automotive industry. This paper outlines how a German car manufacturer explored customer needs in the context of highly automated vehicles (AVs).¹ by implementing corporate foresight research with visionary customers and how the findings supported the strategic decision-making process of the firm. A qualitative pilot study with 29 visionary, trend-receiving customers from Germany, the USA and China identified three innovative use cases for premium highly AVs. A subsequent quantitative online survey with 733 participants from the same three markets confirms the relevance of the use cases for mainstream and innovative consumers. The findings underline that highly AVs are a game changer, transforming future cars into extended living and office spaces, with several implications for practitioners. The findings helped to adapt the organization's business model and branding strategy, provided valuable insights for follow-up studies and shaped corporate communication. The contribution of the paper is threefold: It introduces the concept of strategic customer foresight, outlines specifically how organizations can implement customer foresight research as well as how such research benefits the decision-making process of companies. Further, the paper discloses future customer needs in the context of premium highly AVs.

Purpose Knowledge sharing has become an integral part of organizations’ business strategies, along with aiding organizations to grow and innovate in the market, and gain competitive advantage. This paper aims to concentrate on the role of tacit knowledge sharing in fostering innovation capability of an organization. Specifically, the study considers social capital (relational, cognitive and structural) as an important precursors to tacit knowledge sharing, which in turn, influences innovation capability of an organization. The study further discusses the role that knowledge reciprocation plays in successful tacit knowledge sharing. The relation between knowledge quality and innovation capability is also discussed in the paper. Design/methodology/approach The investigation started with a review of extant literature in the field of knowledge sharing and innovation to derive a set of constructs. A set of hypotheses was developed based on the identified constructs, which was subsequently validated through a primary survey based on a structured questionnaire on a sample size of 190 respondents from the Indian industrial domain. The survey responses were subsequently analysed using the statistical technique of structural equation modeling and conclusions were drawn from the findings. Additionally, careful attention was paid in eliminating the common method bias, which is often associated with a primary survey. Findings A set of six hypotheses were derived based on the identified constructs and were subsequently validated. While validating the hypotheses, it was observed that while knowledge reciprocity, relational social capital and cognitive social capital was positive associated with tacit knowledge sharing, structural social capital did not have a significant effect on the same. Additionally, it was also observed that both tacit knowledge sharing and the quality of knowledge were positively associated with innovation capability. Practical implications The present day business marked by intense competition requires firms to be more aware of their innovative capabilities. Effective sharing of knowledge or information can be deemed as a vital component in achieving this objective. Organizations that practice and nurture innovation activities can use the findings of the current study as a part of their knowledge management strategy. In addition to using the explicit knowledge, which are structured in nature, organizations can also start using tacit knowledge to harness their innovation potential – and the findings from the current study can act as a motivational tool for them to do so. Originality/value Although there is a growing body of literature concerning the role of knowledge management in innovation, there still a dearth in discussing the role of tacit knowledge sharing in exploiting the innovation capability of an organization. The main discussion of this paper brings together a set of important constructs that exhibits the significant role that tacit knowledge sharing plays in determining the innovation capability of an organization. Furthermore, it tries to marry the concepts of social capital and tacit knowledge sharing with innovation capability, therefore adding significantly to the body of literature in knowledge management as well as innovation.

In this paper, we introduce the themes addressed and approaches used by contributors to this special issue. Firstly, we underline that KM is approaching a stage of maturity that requires continuing efforts to use theoretical and empirical investigation to question its future evolution, through a foresight reflection. In parallel, we show that the link between knowledge management and foresight is of long-standing concern. In the context of a knowledge-based economy, this connection has taken on a structuring dimension. Thus, the purpose of this TFSC special issue is two-fold. On the one hand, we seek to explore the impacts of foresight on knowledge management and to understand its cognitive dimensions. And, on the other hand, we cast a future-oriented eye on knowledge management both as a set of practices and a research field. Finally, we present an overview of the topics covered by the selected papers.

Novel business models and increasing innovation speed push global competition in technology-driven markets. Especially, small- and medium-sized family firms struggle with allocating resources in order to cope with volatile market conditions and high-frequency innovations. Foresight as early detection of environmental change has been proven efficient for preparing companies for the future. This chapter reports on a nine-month foresight program conducted with participants from several departments within STULZ, a family firm in the industry of heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC). Findings from in-depth case-work and semi-structured interviews show that the foresight program encouraged innovative thinking among employees and gave space for creative exchange. In summary, STULZ employees identified 29 future scenarios, eight early warning signals as well as innovative projections for three novel products, four service proposals, and 15 processes. Also, the foresight program affected processes of change and established employees’ confidence in STULZ’s adaptability. The chapter adds insights on the significance of long-term management strategies, as well as, future-oriented organizational policy to sustain business success among the microcosm of a family firm.

Strategic foresight encompasses thinking and organizing differently within the contingencies of the present in ways that is mindful of the unpredictable future. Building on the Ricoeurian notion of distentio- ‘the stretching of consciousness through simultaneous attention to memory and expectation’, we develop the concept of distentive capability as a spatio-temporal process of ‘way-finding’ that sustains the creative emergence of strategic foresight across multiple time horizons. Emphasizing narratives as the site of strategic foresight, we draw on tropes taken from three of the most popular speeches delivered by Steve Jobs, the American information technology entrepreneur, inventor and founder of Apple Inc. to illustrate how distentive capability as played out in the reassembling of the past, the present and the future, stretched out in time, may contribute to the identification of potentialities and limits for strategic action. Implication for the theory and practice of strategic foresight are presented.

Because knowledge sharing (KS) can leverage project results, this paper aims to analyze the relationship between KS and the project management process groups (PMPGs). This qualitative research, conducted in large information technology (IT) companies, consists of two phases: (a) an exploratory phase, based on content analysis of nine interviews and documents; and (b) a case study phase based on two cases, where data collected from six interviews and documents were analyzed using content analysis. The research facilitated the identification of the knowledge types involved in each process group as well as opportunities to influence knowledge conversion, thus enabling enhancement of the results obtained from KS in the organization. Furthermore, we identified opportunities to share interproject knowledge that can avoid rework, optimize time, and reduce costs. The study's findings will allow managers to define opportunities for KS in organizations, by identifying when knowledge is being stored and so facilitating the retrieval process. Identifying how employees share knowledge also provides an opportunity to stimulate and inhibit certain behaviors and so create control mechanisms to enhance knowledge management. Lastly, resource allocation is facilitated by identifying the IT necessary to support KS in project teams and which stakeholders are required for each process group. This research combines two different domains by focusing on the means by which KS can leverage results in project management. It also proposes a new, empirically tested, relationship for KS and PMPG, as well as expanding our understanding of the influence KS has on project management.

The aim of our paper is to provide a comprehensive analysis of current foresight practices and their impact on organizational learning, highlighting recent developments. The analysis is based on around forty foresight projects conducted by the CNAM community of practice in the last ten years or so, based on the typology proposed by Bootz (2003) and Bootz and Monti (2008). The aim is twofold: first, we test the robustness of the initial typology and, second, we examine global developments in foresight practices through an analysis of their cognitive aspects. The examination of present practice led to the typology being refined, and demonstrates how its impact on organizational learning has been extended. It also shows how discussion has evolved through networks that are more open to the outside world and closer to action, with measures and tools adopted to promote greater flexibility. These changes may be partially explained by the emergence of the knowledge economy.

Knowledge is key to sustainable competitive advantage, but different kinds of knowledge affect competitive advantage differently, and they exhibit qualitatively different dynamic properties and behaviors. This places particular importance on understanding the dynamics of knowledge as it flows, and organization managers seek to visualize and measure such flows for efficacy and efficiency alike. Unfortunately, knowledge is inherently intangible, invisible and resistant to quantification, particularly when in dynamic motion. Moreover, managing key organization knowledge is left often to haphazard, trial and error processes, rendering pursuits of sustainable competitive advantage daunting at best and infeasible in many cases. Even when guided by well-accepted models in extant theory, managers may not be selecting the best knowledge flow processes for their purposes. The research described in this article builds upon Knowledge Flow Theory and application to initiate a system for visualizing and measuring dynamic knowledge. We leverage a multidimensional model to delineate and analyze a diversity of knowledge as it flows through the organization, and we draw analogically to develop a system of dynamic knowledge equations that enable measurement. We then illustrate its practical use and utility through a representative organization example, which we supplement with decision guidance pertaining to some fundamental knowledge flow tradeoffs facing decision makers. This article closes with a summary of key results and implications, which give us cause to rethink some concepts, assumptions and implications in the literature.

Genetic improvement of crops started since the dawn of agriculture and has continuously evolved in parallel with emerging technological innovations. The use of genome engineering in crop improvement has already revolutionised modern agriculture in less than thirty years. Plant metabolic engineering is still at a development stage and faces several challenges, in particular with the time necessary to develop plant based solutions to bio-industrial demands. However the recent success of several metabolic engineering approaches applied to major crops are encouraging and the emerging field of plant synthetic biology offers new opportunities. Some pioneering studies have demonstrated that synthetic genetic circuits or orthogonal metabolic pathways can be introduced into plants to achieve a desired function. The combination of metabolic engineering and synthetic biology is expected to significantly accelerate crop improvement. A defining aspect of both fields is the design/build/test/learn cycle, or the use of iterative rounds of testing modifications to refine hypotheses and develop best solutions. Several technological and technical improvements are now available to make a better use of each design, build, test, and learn components of the cycle. All these advances should facilitate the rapid development of a wide variety of bio-products for a world in need of sustainable solutions.

PET scanners are sophisticated and highly sensitive biomedical imaging devices that can produce highly quantitative images showing the 3-dimensional distribution of radiotracers inside the body. PET scanners are commonly integrated with x-ray CT or MRI scanners in hybrid devices that can provide both molecular imaging (PET) and anatomical imaging (CT or MRI). Despite decades of development, significant opportunities still exist to make major improvements in the performance of PET systems for a variety of clinical and research tasks. These opportunities stem from new ideas and concepts, as well as a range of enabling technologies and methodologies. In this paper, we review current state of the art in PET instrumentation, detectors and systems, describe the major limitations in PET as currently practiced, and offer our own personal insights into some of the recent and emerging technological innovations that we believe will impact the field. Our focus is on the technical aspects of PET imaging, specifically detectors and system design, and the opportunity and necessity to move closer to PET systems for diagnostic patient use and in vivo biomedical research that truly approach the physical performance limits while remaining mindful of imaging time, radiation dose, and cost. However, other key endeavors, which are not covered here, including innovations in reconstruction and modeling methodology, radiotracer development, and expanding the range of clinical and research applications, also will play an equally important, if not more important, role in defining the future of the field.

Aquaponics is an approach of coupling two technologies: recirculation aquaculture (fish-farms) and hydroponics (soil-less cultivation of crops). While it is perceived as a way to contribute to more sustainable food systems, the technology is still in its infancy, with several challenges. This paper describes current conditions of development and identifies aspects that can promote or hinder future pathways. We focus our analysis on the EU, using Germany as an institutional case study, while also considering worldwide developments. We propose a framework to analyze aquaponics as an emerging technological innovation system at the interface between existing fish and plant production systems. The approach is explorative based on a literature review and interviews with experts. The main findings are that stakeholders have different views regarding the future development pathways, knowledge to manage complex systems in the long term is needed and it is still unclear how to design institutional conditions to deliver sustainable outcomes.

Despite the importance of corporate foresight for innovation management, scholars have yet to identify the organisational processes through which corporate foresight influences a company’s innovativeness. Drawing on the resource-based view and dynamic capabilities theory, we developed a model and posited that the effect of corporate foresight on innovativeness is mediated by organisational learning, while the relationship between corporate foresight and organisational learning is moderated by integrative capabilities. We conducted an empirical study in the manufacturing industry and found support for the study model, in which the indirect effect of corporate foresight on innovativeness through organisational learning was conditional on the level of integrative capabilities. This study has theoretical and practical implications for a more nuanced understanding of corporate foresight and its effect on innovation management.

This paper examines the role of tacit and explicit knowledge in translating management innovation into firm performance in Japanese companies. While past research has been inconsistent on the role of management innovation on firm performance, this research considers how management innovation in organizations can promote tacit and/or explicit knowledge creation, and whether this leads to higher firm performance. This research uses a questionnaire survey of employees of Japanese firms and applies conditional process analysis. There was no direct effect of management innovation onto firm performance, and that instead, both tacit and explicit knowledge fully mediated the relationship between management innovation and firm performance. While management innovation programs by themselves did not directly increase firm performance, the alignment of these programs with knowledge management initiatives enhanced performance. This highlights the need for management innovation that first considers the type of knowledge needed for enhanced performance. Previous research did not consider the role of knowledge as a means to translate management innovation into firm performance. This paper uncovers the mediating role of knowledge, potentially elucidating past inconclusive results.

This paper follows up on recent debates on relations between technological innovation systems (TISs) and context. Particular focus is placed on the role of established industries, which possess important resources for TIS formation. The paper contributes in two ways. First, the paper builds and expands upon the TIS framework to encompass beneficial relations between a TIS and its sectoral and technological context. Second, the framework is applied to the analysis of the emergence of a solar photovoltaic (PV) industry in Norway. The analysis first illustrates how an emerging TIS can benefit from an overlap with an established industry, which serves as a structural foundation and impacts key TIS processes. Second, the paper shows how relations between TIS and context change over time and range from supply chain interaction to more profound overlaps of system elements.

Emerging Technology Supply Chains (ETSCs) are critical to economic growth and renewal as they determine the timing and extent to which economic and social benefits are achieved from future industries like additive technologies, advanced materials, alternative energy, and biotechnology. However, little is known regarding this topic and many of the questions underpinning ETSCs remain understudied. Emerging Technology Supply Chains (ETSC) are the relationships and flows between the ‘string’ of operations and processes that initiate, evolve and develop during determination of the art and associated techniques of doing something novel to produce value in the form of new products and new services to the ultimate consumer. The literature on ETSCs is considered and summarized. An interdisciplinary call to research that includes the consideration of over 20 topics and disciplines is provided.

This research proposes a novel method of identifying and understanding the holistic overview of emerging technologies’ unintended consequences. Latent Semantic Analysis (LSA) text mining technique is employed to yield multiple groups of contextually similar terms from future-oriented data sources, comprising both experts’ and the public's concerns regarding future technologies. Resulting term clusters are considered as new abstractions, or so-called scenarios, of future social impacts. Furthermore, the study acquires greater depth and breadth in conceptualizing social impacts through considering condition- and value-related terms as key linking factors to previous social impact-related literature. Our proposed methodology seeks to gain insights into the utilization of future-oriented data sources for the foresight activity, hoping to mitigate public skepticism and pursue a better social acceptance of emerging technologies.

Social media has become a widely-adopted technology over the past decade, affecting organizations in myriad ways. One of the most important is the effect on organizational knowledge management, in which social media overcomes many of the limitations of previous generations of knowledge management technologies. In this paper, I explore the effects of social media on organizational knowledge management. In doing so, I argue that social media is not a monolithic class of technologies, but a diverse and evolving technological infrastructure that supports and changes the way people communicate and collaborate. Key aspects of social media have gone through a technological evolution over the past decade from cloud computing, to mobile technologies, and into analytics. Each of these shifts has distinct implications for organizational knowledge management, many of which have yet to be fully realized. Furthermore, trends suggest that social media will continue to evolve with emerging technologies, such as artificial intelligence, virtual reality, and augmented reality, which will further influence how organizational knowledge management is practiced. This evolutionary perspective suggests we may be closer to the beginning than the end of how social media will affect organizations and their knowledge management practices. As such, a broad perspective on social media may provide many open areas for research in coming years.

Are knowledge flows all alike? Evidence from European regions. Regional Studies. The paper investigates the impact of distance, contiguity and technological proximity on cross-regional knowledge flows by comparing the evidence concerning co-inventorship, applicant–inventor relationships and citation flows. Evidence is found of significant differences across these diverse kinds of knowledge flows for what concerns the role of distance, and the moderating role of contiguity and technological proximity. Moreover, it is shown that border effects may prove crucial in a twofold sense. On the one hand, contiguity between regions belonging to two different countries still plays a moderating role, although weaker as compared with that of within-country contiguity. On the other hand, regions sharing a frontier with a foreign country are more likely to exchange knowledge with this foreign country than other regions which are far from the border.

Purpose This paper aims to examine a research model that links knowledge sharing enablers, processes and outcome dimensions in law enforcement in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). It attempts to examine the impact of knowledge self-efficacy and top management support on knowledge donating and collecting. It also attempts to examine the effect of these two aspects of knowledge sharing on firm innovation capability. Design/methodology/approach This study used a quantitative approach, with data collected by questionnaire from 685 police officers in a law enforcement agency in the UAE. Findings Knowledge self-efficacy and top management support have a positive impact on knowledge donating and collecting. Only knowledge collecting, however, had a positive effect on firm innovation capability. Research limitations/implications The study has significant academic and practical implications. It supports a previous research model that links enablers, processes and outcomes of knowledge sharing, and confirms them in the context of law enforcement in the UAE. It could also help law enforcement agencies to promote a knowledge sharing culture to support innovation in the UAE. Originality/value The research model is likely to be particularly valuable in knowledge-intensive organizations such as the law enforcement sector. Knowledge sharing is often overlooked by organizations in the UAE because there has to date been little research in this field.

Energy-intensive processing industries like the concrete industry form the base of the economy and account for a large part of global greenhouse gas emissions. Sectoral transformation to cleaner basic materials is therefore crucial, and institutional pressure to do so is increasing. However, socio-technical studies have not sufficiently addressed these sectors. This paper therefore sets out to analyze the systemic problems that inhibit the transformation of the mature innovation system of the concrete sector toward the development and diffusion of clean concrete innovations, for the case of the Netherlands. A structural-functional approach has been frequently applied to identify such systemic problems, but has been limited to emerging technological innovation systems. Consequently, the approach tends to overlook the systemic lock-in that arises from closed cycles of interdependent systemic problems and vested interests that characterize mature innovation systems and that hamper system transformation. This paper analyzes these characteristics to extend the application of the structural-functional approach to the transformation of mature innovation systems. Interviews with 28 stakeholders were conducted and triangulated with reports, websites and other documents. A list of systemic problems was identified that originate within actors, institutions, networks, technology and infrastructure and that impaired the performance of all system functions except knowledge development. Systemic problems are indeed found to be sustained through systemic lock-in, i.e. closed cycles of interdependent systemic problems. Through strategic, often collective action, established firms with vested interests were able to reinforce these interdependent systemic problems to inhibit clean concrete innovation. The study concludes that systemic lock-in inhibits the sustainability transformation of the mature innovation system of concrete in the Netherlands and confirms that the application of the structural-functional approach can be extended from emerging to mature innovation systems. Overcoming systemic lock-in requires a series of well coordinated policy measures that should be implemented in a specific order, to prevent reverting back to the lock-in around the original system configuration.

Complementarities play a crucial role in socio-technical transitions as they accelerate technology development or decline. Missing complementary components in contrast may hamper the emergence of new technologies or negatively affect sector performance. In this paper, we introduce a conceptual framework to analyze complementarities and to understand their consequences for transitions. Our framework consists of four building blocks: i) different relationships, ii) different components, iii) different purposes and iv) complementarity dynamics. The latter two aspects go beyond existing concepts as they highlight the relative and dynamic nature of complementarities. We illustrate the applicability of the framework with examples from the ongoing energy transition. Finally, we discuss a series of complementarity bottlenecks and potential strategies by firms and policy makers of how to resolve these.

Currently there is no formal model describing the dynamics of technological innovation systems. This paper develops a system dynamics model that integrates the concept of ‘motors of innovation’, following the literature on emerging technological innovation systems, with the notion of ‘transition pathways’ that was developed as part of the multi-level-framework thinking. As such, the main contribution of this paper is a cross-over of two key-frameworks into a system dynamics model that can serve as underpinning for future research. The model’s behaviour is illustrated by means of analyses of TIS dynamics in the context of different transition pathways, under different resourcing conditions. The paper also provides a future research agenda, pursuable by means of experimentation and/or further development of the presented model.

The paper discusses foresight as a dynamic strategic practice and theorises the connections of foresight and strategic management. The paper argues that organisations have a rising need to foster relevant future-oriented knowledge in a continuous process that builds on the systemic understanding of the operational environment. For this purpose, the paper outlines a conceptual framework for continuous organisational foresight practice. The framework is based on two conceptual bedrocks. The first is the idea of continuity, referring to the long-term accumulation of organisational practices. The second bedrock is the notion of discontinuity as an organisational transformation factor. Furthermore, the framework builds on the notion of four knowledge spaces in an organisation, and it is constructed through six layers depicted in detail. The paper demonstrates this framework through a case study of a Finnish research and technology organisation, VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland.

The role of Knowledge Management (KM) as a discipline that promotes an integrated, inter-disciplinary and multi-lingual approach to identifying, eliciting, structuring, diffusing and sharing a company’s knowledge assets is now widely recognised. Although several management initiatives to deploy KM at corporate level have been taken, sometimes including intellectual capital valuation and accounting, in many, if not most enterprises, Knowledge Management has definitely been initiated from the floor. Addressing problems with reasonable size and complexity at Business Unit level, but thinking company-wide, allows, amongst other things, a better understanding of the rift that we perceive between the present working practices and those which we expect in the knowledge-enabled organisation of the future. Examples of local KM initiatives that can be easily embedded in a corporate scheme will be discussed.
