Abstract
The evaluation methods are the methods that have the primary aim of identifying
whether the students are moving towards the right path in the achievement of academic goals.
Furthermore, the instructors are also able to generate awareness in terms of the
implementation of teaching-learning methods in an effectual manner. Hence, the learning
abilities and academic performance of the students get identified through the implementation
of evaluation methods. When the instructors put into practice the evaluation methods, they
normally inform the students. In this way, they are able to prepare themselves well. As when
the students will perform well, the instructors will understand that they are performing their
job duties well of instructing students. Therefore, it is of utmost significance for the
instructors to put into operation on a regular basis at all levels of education. The students at
all levels of educational institutions need to be confident and should not feel vulnerable and
apprehensive, particularly when various types of evaluation methods are put into practice.
The main concepts that are taken into account in this research paper are, meaning and
significance of evaluation, principles of evaluation, types of evaluation methods, measures of
bringing about improvements in the evaluation methods and ways of implementing
evaluation.

Evaluation methods render a significant contribution in the designing and ongoing
implementation of initiatives. In this manner, the individuals are able to determine whether
they are carrying out their job duties in an appropriate manner or there is a need to bring
about improvements. The evaluation methods make provision of information in terms of
appropriateness, effectiveness, equity and efficiency of initiatives. The evaluation methods
are put into operation by the instructors at all levels of education. Their primary objective is
to find out how much the students have learned and whether the teaching-learning methods,
instructional strategies and teaching-learning materials are proving to be worthwhile or there
is a need to bring about improvements. Through the implementation of evaluation methods in
an effective manner, the instructors are able to determine the criteria for determining the
success of the educational program. Evaluation is the systematic and an objective process for
assessing the appropriateness, effectiveness, equity and efficiency of initiatives (Evaluation
Strategy, 2016).
The evaluation methods require planning and organizing. The instructors need to plan
the resources, approaches and methods that are needed in putting into operation the
evaluation methods in an appropriate manner. The designing of the evaluation methods is in
accordance to various factors, i.e. grade levels of students, academic subjects and concepts
and academic goals and objectives. When they are designed, they need to ensure they are
helpful to the instructors in finding out whether students have understood the concepts well or
they are experiencing setbacks. The instructors need to be fair when they are evaluating the
students and there should not be any kind of discrimination on the basis of factors such as,
caste, class, creed, race, religion, ethnicity, personality traits, age, gender and socio-economic
background. Just the performance of the students in class assignments, homework
assignments, tests, exams, competitions, quizzes and other activities are the key in evaluating
them. Whereas, in order to lead to effective growth and progression of the students and enrich
the overall system of education, evaluation methods need to be put into practice in a fair and
just manner.
Evaluations are a part of the cycle of continuous improvement outlined in the
performance improvement and accountability framework. Rigorous evaluation delivers the
feedback on a continuous basis throughout the implementation of the initiative (Evaluation
Strategy, 2016). It makes provision of insights in terms of whether an initiative was
implemented as intended and whether an initiative was working as intended, for whom it is
working and under what circumstances. In the implementation of the evaluation processes in
an effective manner, there are various factors that need to be taken into account, i.e.
educational program, assignments and tasks given to the students, the time frame in which the
course syllabus or program is to be completed and goals and objectives of the overall system
of education. Hence, when these factors will be taken into account, the instructors will be
able to put into practice the evaluation methods in an effectual manner. Therefore, it is
comprehensively understood that evaluation methods are valuable in promoting student
learning and in up-grading the overall system of education.
Meaning and Significance of Evaluation
The evaluation is regarded as the comprehensive term in the test. It includes all types
of examinations in it. The main objective of evaluation is not only to check the knowledge of
the learners, but other aspects of the learners as well. Evaluation is the continuous process
and leads together the teaching and the learning processes. It is concerned with the
achievement of the students. It is interpreted in terms of desirable changes in the behaviour.
When the evaluation methods are put into practice in a well-organized manner, the changes
and improvements are not only brought about in the academic performance of the students,
but also in their attitudes, feelings and perspectives. In other words, it is the process of
judging the value or something by a certain appraisal (What is Evaluation in Education,
2019). Therefore, the meaning and significance of evaluation is recognized, when they render
an important contribution in identifying the limitations in the performance of the students and
they are able to bring about improvements.
Evaluation is a comprehensive process and includes all the aspects that can be
evaluated. In educational institutions at all levels, the evaluation not only takes place in terms
of academic performance, but also in terms of conduct, behaviour and participation of
students in other tasks and activities. When the instructors feel that the students are
experiencing setbacks, they provide help and support to them to bring about improvements.
The instructors and the students need to work in co-ordination and integration with each other
in bringing about improvements and transformations. The effectiveness of the evaluation
methods is the key in bringing about improvements and changes. Hence, when the instructors
and the students will form the viewpoint that evaluation methods are regarded to be
significant and worthwhile and are proving to be helpful and beneficial to them in doing well
and in achieving academic goals, they will recognize the meaning and significance of
evaluation.
Evaluation is the common practice in leading to growth and development of the
students in a satisfactory manner. The instructors are dedicated to make provision of
knowledge and understanding to the students in terms of academic concepts and lesson plans,
not only with the primary aim of enriching their professional but also personal lives. The
students need to be well-aware in terms of ways of putting into practice the measures and
approaches in augmenting their educational skills and making use of them in sustaining their
living conditions in an effective manner. The students should feel pleasurable when various
types of evaluation methods are implemented and overcome apprehensiveness. Furthermore,
the instructors should make sure that they should not experience any psychological problems
of stress, anxiety and frustration. Within educational institutions at all levels, when teamwork
is promoted, the students will obtain help and assistance from their fellow students as well in
performing well and in achieving the desired outcomes. Therefore, the meaning and
significance of evaluation is recognized, when the evaluation methods prove to be beneficial
and favourable to the students as well as the overall system of education.
Principles of Evaluation
The evaluation methods can prove to be effectual and meaningful, when the
individuals are well-aware in terms of principles of evaluation. Generation of information in
terms of principles of evaluation will render an important contribution in enabling the
instructors and students in terms of methods and approaches which would prove to be
efficacious and meaningful in achieving academic goals. Hence, one needs to be informative
in terms of them throughout their job duties and pursuance of educational programs. The
principles of evaluation are, impact, rigour, influential, timely and transparent and integrated
and resourced (Evaluation Strategy, 2016). These are stated as follows:
Impact
Impact is referred to the effect of evaluation methods. Evaluations assess the
appropriateness, effectiveness, equity and efficiency of initiatives. When the evaluation
methods are put into practice at various levels of education, they have an effect upon the
performance of the students. For example, when the students are to participate in debate
competitions, they will be well-prepared in terms of the topics as their performance will have
an impact upon their career prospects. Through the principle of impact, the instructors as well
as the students are able to understand, how appropriate, effective, and efficient the initiatives
will be in evaluating the performance of the students. Therefore, the principle of impact is
regarded as an important principle.
Rigour
In understanding the principle of rigour, one is able to understand that evaluation
methods employ a high quality design, combining qualitative and quantitative approaches to
inform findings. The evaluation also takes place by filling out the survey questionnaires
related to the performance of the individuals. Collecting information through a survey
questionnaire is a quantitative approach. In higher educational institutions, the students are
given survey questionnaires to evaluate the performance of their instructors. On the other
hand, qualitative approach involves interviewing individuals. Their performance is evaluated
by getting engaged in verbal communication processes with them. Therefore, one is able to
understand satisfactorily that through the implementation of a high quality design, and
combining qualitative and quantitative approaches to inform findings, the principle of rigour
is recognized.
Influential
In the case of the principle of influential, the evaluation methods are used to bring
about improvements in the design and delivery of initiatives. This encourages the
participation of stakeholders and informing decisions in practice. The decision making
processes is an integral part of the evaluation processes. The instructors need to make wise
and productive decisions primarily in terms of selecting them. When the decisions are made
in terms of selecting them, it needs to be ensured, they are meaningful and worthwhile.
Therefore, one is able to understand in a well-organized manner that in the case of the
principle of influential, the participation of stakeholders and making of wise and productive
decisions are required to be paid attention towards.
Timely and Transparent
The timely and transparent principle of evaluation signifies that evaluations are
conducted in a manner with the appropriate mix of internal and external expertize and
independence and findings are published. In simple words, this indicates the evaluation
methods needs to be put into practice on a regular basis. In most cases, upon completion of
every lesson plan a test is conducted. The term transparent is referred to clear. The evaluation
methods need to be clear to the students as well as the instructors and they should not be
perplexed in terms of them. Therefore, it can be stated, the timely and transparent principle of
evaluation puts emphasis upon the fact that these methods need to be implemented on time
and should be clearly understood.
Integrated and Resourced
The integrated and resourced principle of evaluation signifies that evaluations are
planned early in the designing of the initiatives and the appropriately resources in proportion
to the value, anticipated impact and the strategic importance of the initiative. The instructors
need to be well-aware and inculcate the traits of diligence, resourcefulness and
conscientiousness among themselves in evaluating the students. When the evaluation
methods are put into practice, it is not just the students, who are required to prepare
themselves, but instructors too need to be well-prepared. Therefore, through the principle of
integrated and resourced, the instructors as well as the students are able to understand that
they need to be well-aware in terms of management of resources and implementation of
instructional strategies in a well-organized manner.
Types of Evaluation Methods
The various types of evaluation methods that are put into practice in educational
institutions at all levels are stated as follows: (What are the Types of Assessment? 2020).
Pre-assessment or Diagnostic Evaluation – Before the evaluation methods are to be
put into practice by the instructors, they need to take into consideration the academic needs
and requirements of the students. The academic needs and requirements of the students are in
terms of what they are willing to learn, what kind of support and assistance do they need in
carrying out their tasks and activities and in preparation of projects and assignments. The
instructors need to be aware in terms of strengths and weaknesses. Hence, in the
implementation of the teaching-learning methods and instructional strategies, they ensure that
strengths get reinforced and weaknesses get eliminated. Therefore, it can be stated, evaluation
methods and the instructional strategies need to be formulated in such a manner that should
conduct an analysis of the academic needs and requirements and strengths and weaknesses of
the students.
Formative Evaluation – Formative evaluation is put into practice to monitor the
learning of the students and provide feedback. It is used in the first attempt of developing
instruction. When the explanation is provided to the students in terms of lesson plans and
academic concepts, the instructors ask questions, give assignments or even ask them to play
the characters in the lesson plans. In this manner, the gaps are identified in the instructional
strategies. When the students are performing well, this shows that the instructional strategies
are put into operation in a well-ordered manner. On the other hand, when the students
experience setbacks, it indicates, there is a need to conduct research and bring about
improvements in the teaching-learning methods, instructional strategies and teaching-learning
materials. Therefore, it is well-understood, formative evaluation is a type of evaluation,
which would contribute significantly in leading to up-gradation of teaching-learning methods,
instructional strategies and teaching-learning materials.
Summative Evaluation – Summative evaluation is the type of evaluation, where the
instructors form the viewpoints that the most important outcomes at the end of instruction
have been reached. The effectiveness of learning, reactions on the instruction and how they
have proven to be advantageous to the students as well as the overall system of education are
taken into account. When the students are able to understand the lesson plans and academic
concepts well and perform well in assignments, projects, activities and tests, they are not only
rendering a significant contribution in achieving personal and professional goals, but also are
contributing efficiently in enriching the overall system of education. Therefore, one is able to
augment their understanding that summative evaluation is useful in enabling the instructors in
observing how students are making use of their knowledge, skills and abilities in achieving
professional and personal goals.
Confirmative Evaluation - In the case of confirmative evaluation, the instructors
implement the evaluation methods to find out how much the students have learned and
understood. Furthermore, emphasis is put upon the fact, whether the teaching-learning
methods, instructional strategies and teaching-learning materials are proving to be useful or
there is a need to bring about improvements. Through the implementation of evaluation
methods in an operative manner, the instructors are able to determine the measures and
principles for determining the success of the educational or training program. Evaluation is
the methodical and an objective process for assessing the relevance, efficiency, impartiality,
pertinence and proficiency of creativities. Therefore, it is well-understood, the confirmative
evaluation puts emphasis on whether the teaching-learning methods, instructional strategies
and teaching-learning materials are suitable to the academic goals and the overall system of
education or there is a need to bring about improvements.
Norm-referenced Evaluation – In the case of the norm-referenced evaluation, the
instructors compare the grades of the students against the average grade of the entire school.
Through this type of evaluation, the instructors are able to generate information in terms of
various aspects, i.e. the learning abilities of the students are acknowledged, the instructors are
able to find out whether the teaching-learning methods, instructional strategies and teaching-
learning materials are proving to be worthwhile or measures need to be formulated to lead to
up-gradation. Furthermore, emphasis is put upon the fact, whether effective growth and
progression of the students is taking place and enrichment is brought about in the overall
system of education. When the outcomes are positive, the methods and strategies are
considered positive. On the other hand, when outcomes are negative, then improvements
need to be made. Therefore, norm-referenced evaluation aims towards ensuring that the
academic performance of the students is up to the mark and in accordance to the class
standards.
Criterion-referenced Evaluation – Criterion-referenced evaluation puts emphasis upon
the fact that the academic performance of the students needs to be in accordance to the
specified criteria, norms, principles and standards. For example, within the course of
pursuance of masters and doctoral programs, when the students are working on research
projects, they are required to follow certain principles and standards. This type of evaluation
signifies whether the methods and procedures that are put into practice by the students are in
accordance to the standards and principles. When the curriculum and instructional strategies
are put into practice, the instructors need to ensure, they make use of modern, scientific and
innovative methods. Therefore, it can be stated, criterion-referenced evaluation puts emphasis
upon the aspect that the academic performance of the students is in accordance to the norms,
principles and standards of the system of education.
Ipsative Evaluation – It is apparent that within the course of time, improvements need
to be brought about in the performance of the students. The instructors and the students are
making use of modern, scientific and innovative methods. Furthermore, technologies are
made use of to a major extent in augmenting knowledge and understanding in terms of
academic concepts and lesson plans as well as in preparation of assignments, projects and
reports. When the students make use of modern, scientific and innovative methods and
technologies in an efficacious manner, they are able to bring about improvements. When
improvements have been brought about or changes have been made, the current performance
is compared with the past performance. Hence, in this manner, the students as well as the
instructors are able to find out how modern, scientific and innovative methods and
technologies are proving to be effectual. Therefore, ipsative evaluation is regarded as useful
in comparing the current performance against the previous performance.
Measures of bringing about Improvements in the Evaluation
Methods
The measures of bringing about improvements in the evaluation methods are stated as
follows:
Making Selection of the Appropriate Reporting Formats – In the implementation of
the evaluation methods, the instructors need to be well-aware in terms of appropriate
reporting formats. In the reporting format, one needs to take into account various factors, i.e.
name of the author, date of the preparation of report, introduction, body, conclusions and
recommendations and summary of the main points. This is regarded as an appropriate
procedure in the preparation of reports and projects and facilitates the evaluation processes in
a suitable manner. Hence, when the students are informed by their instructors in terms of
preparation of appropriate reporting formats, the evaluation methods will be put into practice
in a well-ordered and satisfactory manner. Therefore, it is well-understood, making selection
of the appropriate reporting formats is regarded as one of the crucial measures of bringing
about improvements in the evaluation methods.
Ensure their Utilization Provide Accurate Information – The primary objective of the
evaluation methods is to identify the learning abilities of the students. Furthermore, the
instructors are able to find out whether the teaching-learning methods, instructional strategies
and teaching-learning materials are proving to be worthwhile or need to be improved. In
addition, they state, whether effective growth and progression of the students is taking place
or not. When any type of evaluation method is put into practice, it needs to be ensured that
they provide factual and accurate information. Obtaining factual and accurate information is
necessary and valuable for the instructors as well as the students. In other words, their
utilization should prove to be favourable and advantageous. Therefore, it is comprehensively
understood, when the utilization of various types of evaluation methods provide accurate
information, it is regarded as one of the essential measures of bringing about improvements
in the evaluation methods.
Recognize and Alleviate the Impediments – Impediments are regarded as an integral
part of the professional as well as personal lives of the individuals. Within the course of
implementation of teaching-learning methods, evaluation methods and achievement of
academic goals, there are occurrence of impediments. The impediments need to be
recognised and measures and approaches are put into operation to remove or alleviate them.
They should be prevented from assuming a major form. Within educational institutions at all
levels, appropriate measures and practices need to be put into practice in generating
awareness as well as in alleviating the impediments. Therefore, one is able to understand well
that when the instructors and the supervisors are well-aware in terms of measures and
approaches of recognizing and alleviating the impediments, primarily in case of the
evaluation methods, they will be able to bring about improvements in them.
Implement Time Management Skills – Time management skills are the skills, which
enable the individuals to utilize their time in an effective manner. In other words, they are
able to take out time for all tasks and activities. When these skills are put into practice in an
efficacious manner, the instructors will be able to complete the lesson plans, give class
assignments, homework assignments, encourage the students to participate in activities and
conduct tests within the required time. On the other hand, the students develop their
competencies and abilities to complete their assignments, projects, tasks and activities on
time. Through these skills, the individuals will be able to take out time for all tasks and
activities, no matter how many job duties and responsibilities they have. Therefore, it can be
stated, implementing time management skills is an important measure of bringing about
improvements in the evaluation methods.
Implement Leadership Skills – The instructors are required to put into practice
leadership skills throughout the implementation of their job duties. The leadership skills are
the skills, which enables the instructors to guide and lead the students in the right direction.
The right direction is towards doing well in studies and the attainment of academic goals.
These skills are regarded as efficacious and worthwhile in instructing them not only in terms
of academic subjects and concepts but also in terms of morality, ethics, norms, values and
principles needed to emerge into good human beings and productive citizens of the country.
In the case of implementation of evaluation methods, the leadership skills will prove to be
worthwhile in generating the desired outcomes. Furthermore, these skills will contribute well
in enabling the instructors and heads to make wise decisions and enrich the overall system of
education. Therefore, it can be stated, implementing leadership skills is a vital measure of
bringing about improvements in the evaluation methods.
Develop the Evaluation Design – Evaluation design is referred to as the designing of
the evaluation methods. It is the structure that makes provision of information to the
individuals to provide answers to evaluation questions. Evaluation design is the common
research design that entails putting into practice the structured assessment of the value of
resources utilized in the project or in the achievement of educational goals and objectives. In
the development of the evaluation design, normally the discussion meetings are called. In
these meetings, the individuals exchange ideas and viewpoints and an appropriate evaluation
design is formulated. The academic subjects and concepts, grade levels of the students, their
learning abilities and academic goals and objectives are the main factors taken into
consideration. Therefore, one is able to understand well that development of an evaluation
design is regarded as one of the fundamental measures of bringing about improvements in the
evaluation methods.
Formulate the Evaluation Questions – Evaluation questions are the high level
questions in terms of which an evaluation method is designed (Specify the Key Evaluation
Questions, n.d.). These are not regarded as specific questions, which are utilized in the case
of conducting an interview, but these questions are primarily related to the teaching-learning
methods, instructional strategies, teaching-learning materials, collection of data, analysis of
data and reporting of the findings. The main factors that need to be taken into account in the
formulation of the evaluation questions are, appropriateness, efficiency and effectiveness.
The members of the educational institutions need to ensure that they prove to be beneficial to
the students and the system of education as a whole. When the evaluation questions are
formulated, they are regarded to contribute effectively in bringing about improvements in the
evaluation methods. Therefore, it is necessary to put into practice this measure on a regular
basis.
Conducting an Economic Evaluation of the Program – Economic evaluation of the
program is a measure, which is related to economically evaluating the program. The
educational programs are long-term and short-term. Whether the educational programs are
long-term and short-term, it is necessary to conduct an economic evaluation. Economic
evaluation is the process of systematic identification, measurement, and valuation of inputs
and outcomes of the two alternative activities and the subsequent comparative analysis of
them. The main objective of economic evaluation is to identify the best course of action,
based on the evidence available. Economic evaluation is considered important as it enables
the individuals to identify how to make use of various types of resources in an effective
manner, i.e. human, financial, technical and material. Therefore, one is able to understand
well that conducting an economic evaluation of the program is regarded as one of the
significant measures of bringing about improvements in the evaluation methods.
Initiate the Evaluation Process upon Completion of Every Lesson Plan – The
evaluation methods are normally put into practice after the completion of every lesson plan.
The students are given class assignments, and homework assignments. They are encouraged
to participate in tasks and activities. In addition, competitions, tests and exams are conducted.
When the evaluation process is conducted upon completion of every lesson plan, the
instructors are able to identify the learning abilities of the students. Furthermore, if they feel
that there is a need to bring about improvements in teaching-learning methods, and teaching-
learning materials, they implement their tasks and make improvements. This measure is
proven to be beneficial to the instructors and students in doing well in one’s job and in
generating the desired outcomes. Therefore, initiating the evaluation process upon completion
of every lesson plan is regarded to be of utmost significance in bringing about improvements
in the evaluation methods.
Ensure Consistency in Training and Management – The instructors need to possess
the required educational qualifications, skills, job experience and aptitude needed to carry out
their job duties and generate the desired outcomes (How to Evaluate the Programme, n.d.).
They are required to get enrolled in training programs in order to acquire knowledge and
augment their skills and abilities. In training and management, one needs to ensure that there
is consistency. The trait of consistency will facilitate in enhancing stability, regularity and
uniformity. Hence, in the formulation and implementation of evaluation methods as well,
there should be consistency. The management of the evaluation methods is essential and the
trait of consistency needs to be taken into consideration. Therefore, it can be stated, ensuring
consistency in training and management in the evaluation methods is regarded as a key in
augmenting evenness and efficaciousness and in bringing about improvements in the
evaluation methods.
Ways of Implementing Evaluation
The common ways of implementing evaluation are, the performance of the students in
class assignments, homework assignments, tests, exams, competitions, quizzes and other
activities. Class assignments are the assignments that are given to the students in class upon
completion of lesson plans. Homework assignments are the assignments that are given to the
students for homework. When they are to augment their knowledge and understanding in
terms of lesson plans and academic concepts in an adequate manner, the instructors give them
assignments for homework. When the lesson plans are easy to understand, the students are
able to perform homework as well as class assignments well. On the other hand, when they
are difficult, the students may experience problems and challenges. But inculcating the traits
of diligence and conscientiousness and forming amiable terms and relationships with their
fellow students and instructors will help them in overcoming the problems and lead to
enhancement of performance.
Tests and exams are usually regarded as ways of evaluation, which enables the
students to feel apprehensive and vulnerable. But when they are well-aware and
knowledgeable in terms of academic concepts and lesson plans, they do not usually feel
stressed and anxious when they have to prepare for tests and exams. There are students, who
experience learning disabilities. They are not able to acquire an efficient understanding of the
lesson plans and academic concepts in one lecture. In such cases, they feel stressed at the
time of exams. Therefore, in order to overcome the problems and limitations that are
associated with tests and exams, the students need to pay adequate attention in class, follow
the directions of their instructors and supervisors and inculcate the traits of diligence,
resourcefulness and conscientiousness.
Competitions, quizzes and other academic activities are other ways of evaluating
students. Competitions take place at all levels of educational institutions. These are related to
academics as well as extra-curricular activities. In some cases, participation in competitions is
compulsory, whereas, in other cases, it is optional. Quizzes are normally organized related to
academic subjects, i.e. mathematics, science, social science and so forth. In addition, there are
other activities as well, which are related to the academic learning of students. The various
types of activities are normally organized within the course of implementation of lecture
methods. When the instructors are imparting knowledge and understanding to the students in
terms of academic concepts, they organize activities. The primary objective of activities is not
only to evaluate the academic performance, but also to make learning interesting and
pleasurable. Therefore, it can be stated that all the ways of implementing evaluation, i.e. class
assignments, homework assignments, tests, exams, competitions, quizzes and other activities
are meaningful and effective at all levels of education.
Conclusion
Evaluation methods render an important contribution in the planning and ongoing
implementation of creativities. In this manner, the individuals are able to determine whether
they are carrying out their job duties in an appropriate manner or there is a need to bring
about improvements. Their main objective is to identify the learning abilities of the students
and whether the teaching-learning methods, instructional strategies and teaching-learning
materials are proving to be worthwhile or need to be improved. The principles of evaluation
are, impact, rigour, influential, timely and transparent and integrated and resourced. The
various types of evaluation methods are, pre-assessment or diagnostic evaluation, formative
evaluation, summative evaluation, confirmative evaluation, norm-referenced evaluation,
criterion-referenced evaluation and ipsative evaluation.
The measures of bringing about improvements in the evaluation methods are, making
selection of the appropriate reporting formats, ensure their utilization provide accurate
information, recognize and alleviate the impediments, implement time management skills,
implement leadership skills, develop the evaluation design, formulate the evaluation
questions, conducting an economic evaluation of the program, initiate the evaluation process
upon completion of every lesson plan and ensure consistency in training and management.
The common ways of implementing evaluation are, the performance of the students in class
assignments, homework assignments, tests, exams, competitions, quizzes and other activities.
Finally, it can be stated, when the evaluation methods will be put into practice in a well-
organized manner, they will facilitate in the achievement of educational goals and in
enriching the overall system of education.

The purpose of this study was to assess the academic performance evaluation of Mass Communication students in Nigerian Universities. The objectives were to find out the most common evaluation methods, the evaluation frequency, and the outstanding barriers. The goal and the social constructivism theories were applied. The scope of this research was limited to two universities with Mass Communication /Communication Arts as a course of study. The two universities are the University of Uyo, and the WellSpring University, Benin in Southern Nigeria. The method was a survey on a population of 16 lecturers purposively taken and administered with a closed-ended questionnaire. Findings indicated that most lecturers, 8 persons or 50 percent, apply termly examinations to evaluate students' performance at the expense of class assignments, continuous assessments, class participation, and practical sessions. The implication is that the academic performance of Mass Communication course students is poor and not evenly evaluated. The implication also shows that there has been a turning out of half-baked graduates due to poor standards of academic evaluation over a period. This research has also established that result-oriented academic evaluation methods have a link with students' performance no matter the course of study in the Universities. It is recommended that authorities of Universities should set goals and endeavor to restrain the lecturers from using corruption, bias, and social constructivism sentiments in evaluating students. Regulatory agencies of Nigerian universities have to put effective practical structures of students' evaluation and regularly conduct transparent monitoring of teaching and assessment models. This work has validated propositions of the goal and social constructivism theories and attendant effects on templates of students' evaluation by educational institutions. It seeks further research to establish purposeful and practical evaluation methods to meet the goals of universities in Nigerian society.
