YouTube Statistics: A Look at Its Effect on YouTube's Digital Marketing

Digital marketing has been a vital part of every business ever since the evolution of technology in the society. The constant evolution of these technologies paved way to the evolution of digital marketing. Making it jump higher and higher to newer platform in the game. One of these new players is YouTube that has a high number of creators or influencers attracting higher number of eyes from the business world. Past research noted that YouTube influencers create an impact in the social and economic scene among younger audience. Yet, there is not enough knowledge about the numbers playing around the platform and its effect on the digital marketing within this. In our article, we have summarized the vital numbers in YouTube specifically the subscription, views and video uploads that was later on related to its number of marketing tools used from the top 100 YouTube communities in the Philippines. We found out that there is a handful amount of marketing tools that these YouTubers use when working with brands. Although our findings showed that this numbers do not have any relationship with each other.

INTRODUCTION
Digital marketing plays a major role in
connecting a certain company or a business to people.
In order to connect with current and prospective
customers businesses leverage digital channels such
as search engines, social media, email, and other
websites, all the marketing efforts that use an
electronic device or the internet is covered by digital
marketing (Alexander, 2019). YouTubers or
sometimes referred as vloggers are YouTube content
creators and a type of internet celebrity who grew
subscribers or followers through their different vlogs
or videos in YouTube. The research problem that the
researchers seek to resolve is finding out if there is a
significant effect on a YouTube channel's statistics on
the number of marketing strategies they receive with
brands.
The number of subscribers, likes, dislikes,
comments and shares of a YouTube channel has a
great impact on its viewers. YouTubers are often
ranked based on this matter that is why the
researchers seek to know if the number of subscribers,
likes, and views are also the reason why brands
collaborate them for marketing tactics.
YouTube is one of the greatest digital
mediums that gives marketers and different
businesses more opportunities to reach and attract
their target market. YouTube not only provides a
forum for people to connect, inform, and inspire
others across the globe, it also acts as a distribution
platform for original content creators and advertisers
large and small. In the digital period, the Philippines
has taken the global lead in one of the market
potentials continues to grow with more Filipinos
spending great amount of time on social media, one
trend is influencer-generated content. particular area:
time spent on social media (Jarboe, year). The
Influencer Marketing in Philippines (2015-2019) also
provides a quick low down on the state of social
media marketing and influencer marketing landscape
in the Philippines; 70% of teenage YouTube
subscribers trust influencer opinions over traditional
celebrities. 57% of beauty and fashion companies use
influencers as part of their marketing strategies. On
average, businesses generate $6.50 for every $1
invested in influencer marketing.
YouTube is a video-sharing website that
constantly and consistently grows and dominates the
internet in the Philippines, and with the development
of digital marketing YouTube has also become an
exponentially large and popular digital medium
where it provides many different strategies for
promotion and brand awareness. YouTube has a vast
and great number of viewers and fans globally, that is
why this research will be focused on the
demographics of YouTube users in the Philippines
and market scene. According to Influencer Marketing
in Philippines (2015-2019), In 2016 the Philippines
had 50.77 million internet users, this figure is
projected to grow to 57.84 million internet users in
2022.
Youtube created a community for the people
to connect with their favorite social figure, that is now
can be better known as YouTuber. YouTubers plays
a major role in digital marketing for the reason that
YouTubers use different kind of selling tools and
form of advertisements to introduce a specific brand.
It also became a tool for the different companies and
businesses to connect with their prospects and build
their brands. This would help the readers be educated
and enlightened about the use of YouTube as a tool
of digital marketing in the Philippines. This subject
matter should be focused for the reason that numerous
Filipinos use and watch YouTube almost 24/7. And it
is a great opportunity for businesses to create and
brand engagement. Firms and businesses use different
kind of selling tool through the YouTubers that has a
great number of subscriptions and views to create
brand recognition and brand awareness. The most
used marketing tool by the YouTubers in the
Philippines to create brand engagement in different
channel category are content marketing, referral
marketing, unboxing and review, and PR packages.
In the category of entertainment, people & blogs,
comedy, howto & style, music, and sports the most
used selling tool is the content marketing with a
numerous subscriber count, likes, dislikes, and video
durations. This different selling tool has been
determined through summing up the total
appearances of the products that was shown on a
particular YouTube Channel in the Philippines and by
reviewing and evaluating the different marketing
tools that was used for brands.
METHODS AND MATERIALS
The researchers first gathered the Top 100
most subscribed YouTube channel in the Philippines
to know where the data that will be used should come
from or from which channels rather, to do so The
YouTube Channel Crawler (Reemer, 2019) was used
in order to get the ranking of these channels. From the
said site the subscribers count, number of videos
uploaded, and the joined date of channels were the
few things that are provided. Afterwards YouTube
Data Tool (Rieder, 2015) was used in the other hand
to gather the number of views, likes, dislikes and the
duration of the videos on each channel. From the total
of 100 channels the researchers delimited the data, the
channels that has an over 1000 total videos uploaded
was removed for the available tool used cannot
process the high amount of data. The researchers have
only studied the videos uploaded from the year of
2014 up until the mid-week of August 2019 in the
remaining channels. The YouTube channels gathered
are sectioned by their channel category, all channels
in the same category were combined and are analyzed
in that set up.
RESULTS AND DISCUSSION
YouTubers or these Social Media Influencers
are often recognized by the numbers their channel
has. One of these are their subscriber count which is
the main factor most of the time on how they are
ranked. Another one is their number of views, number
of likes, number of comments and number of shares
that can vary from video to video. In the Philippine
YouTube community, the highest amount of
combined subscriber count are the channels under the
category of Entertainment that holds 60% of the total
subscribers from the top 100 channels. Followed by
the categories People and Blogs and Music that both
has 14% of the subscriber count from the channels
under the category. Sports, Howto and Style,
Comedy, Film and Animation are the other category
that are also included in the ranking.
The channels under the category of
entertainment can have a very large scope of topic
that their videos might talk about. There is no specific
way to describe this category for they often play
around different types of videos commonly
depending on the trends on social media. The
audience that they want to target also plays a role on
what type of videos they will put up specially on to
whom will they share their personal interests to.
People and Blogs are the channels that are
mostly doing vlogs, that is created for the viewers to
witness something from their personal life may it be
sharing a trip, daily errands or them sharing their
personal interests. Most of the Celebrity-YouTuber
are within this category sharing a more "authentic"
part of their lives.
Music are consisted of channels that are from
singers or recording artists that shares their song and
music videos through the platform. Channels who
also perform song cover are categorized here as well
as brands related to music that creates live
performances of artists.
Sports are often an official channel of a sport
television program or network that commonly
uploads broadcasts of different games or sports after
its live airing on televisions.
Howto and Style are often linked to beauty
related videos such as makeups, hairstyling and
clothing or fashion videos. These are usually some

guides that can be followed or used as an inspiration
on the lives of the audience.
Comedy is purely what the category name
suggests as. These can be a vlog of a naturally very
funny person, social media challenges and dares,
video reaction or commentaries.
Film and Animation are some works
originally created by an artist such as music videos of
nursery rhymes, songs from movies or any creative
input of their own work.
79% of the videos from these channels are still
coming from the combined channels under the
category of entertainment and followed by 12% from
the channels under the category of sports. When it
comes to the total number of views from each
category, entertainment has 61% that is still the
highest in that area. Followed by 24% from the
category of music and an 11% from people and blog
category.
After looking up on every video from every
category and every channel under it. Here are the
marketing strategies that these YouTubers use when
they are working with a brand in their videos.
Content Marketing was shown to be
incorporating a brand to their usual videos or the style
on how they put up a content. Most of the time the
brand that they are working on are somehow related
on their usual subject when uploading a video.

she often creates beauty and fashion related videos.

making her content be not affected by these
marketing tactics when creating a video. Another one
is Miniature Cusina from the Entertainment category
that creates cooking videos in a smaller scale. The
channel often partnered to food kitchenware brands
that are easier to include in the video as can be easily
used as an ingredient or a tool in the video.
Referral
Marketing are
usually used by
brands who has
an online store
may it be from their official site or from another
online distributor. Commonly this type of tool is used
with another type for it cannot be easily inserted in
videos without showing the viewers what the product
or promo is all about. Basically, brands give out
promo codes to these YouTubers that their viewers
can use in virtually purchasing their products that
would give them some percentage off from its
original price. Although sometimes these codes can
have a long promo period and YouTubers cannot
always put it in the videos so they would just put it in
the description box of their next upcoming videos so
the viewers would know that it is still running.
Public
Relation Packages
or commonly
referred to as PR
packages or PR
kits, in this type of
marketing tool
brands create a list of social media influencers that
they will mail some of their newest product or product
line. In return YouTubers often includes these
packages in their videos depending on how they will
feature it. For some they often do a haul of all the
products that came on to their mail combining all the
brands in one upload, while for some YouTubers they
would do a single upload for a single package from
the brand and would try to use these products in the
video.
A much more
specific brand feature are
the Unboxing and Reviews
of a brand. From the
mentioned PR Packages, a
while ago, this is another tool that is related to it but
is not exactly what the other one is. In here the
YouTubers would create videos reviewing a brand
laying out all of their thoughts on their experience
with it. As much as possible these YouTubers protect
their reliability and are very vocal about giving real
reviews to brands.
Across the categorizes Content Marketing are
highly used on channels from People and Blog. The
said category is the most flexible one that can match
the marketing tool. As it was explained a while ago
People and Blogs often share their everyday life to the
viewers making it easier for brands to work with them
as they can easily incorporate whatever they are
working in onto their videos, they can adjust
depending on whatever they might do may it be
travelling, doing chores, eating and etc. The Content
Marketing is also the highest tool used in the
Philippine YouTube community.
PR Packages are highly sent to channels under
the Entertainment Category. This category is the most
diverse in terms of video content because they can do
any type of video as long as it is related to the interest
of their channels. Some YouTubers often upload a PR
Package related videos on their channels from time to
time. The entertainment category also got the highest
rate for Unboxing and Reviews, well of course they
get PR Packages and they might as well give their
thoughts about it to the viewers although there is a
difference between the number of these tools in the
category making it seem like not everyone are doing
the both of it at the same time.
Howto and Style received the highest number
of Referral Marketing. These are the channels that
often shares whatever it is that they are using,
wearing, eating, drinking and etc. They often also
show where did they get these products that they are
mentioning making this type of marketing tool
attractive to this category.
After analyzing both the YouTubers and the
marketing tools they are related with. The total
number of subscription count, views and number of
video uploads every category have from each of the
channels under it are matched on the number of types
of marketing tools they add in their videos when
working with a brand. The data reveals that these
numbers do not have any significant relationship with
each other. The increasing amount of a channel
statistics from its subscriber count, views and number
of video uploads does not translate to an increasing

collaboration with brands. As weird as it can be, the
seemingly factor as to why YouTubers are the new
face of Digital Marketing is not really the factor as
why they are selected to present the brand in the world
of the YouTube platform. The variables can juggle up
around making it appear that they do not really matter
on to each other.
CONCLUSION
The numbers present in a YouTube channel
does not have any relation as to whether or not they
will receive an amount of brand collaboration in the
same number within the platform. It appears that what
matters is the type of content a YouTuber puts up that
lands him/her to a specific type of marketing tools for
brands he/she could possibly create for. This results
to be a smart factor for both the YouTuber and the
brand, if the two will connect in a specific area both
of them possess it is easier for them to deliver what it
is that is needed to be put on the attention of the
viewers. Blowing up in the busy world of YouTube
might be easier as it looks like for the most of us but
it is definitely harder to find that one channel that
would present the brand in the said busy world it has.
