Perhaps the first avenues that come to mind are the outward conveyances of the marketing communications mix, including advertising, personal selling, sales promotion, public relations, and direct marketing. But other prominent communicators also exist, including the people employed by healthcare institutions, the places in which services are delivered, and the brands that represent given establishments. This wide variety of communicative mechanisms is somewhat of a mixed blessing, affording myriad options, but also necessitating extra care and attention in developing associated marketing communications. Discussion: Now more than ever, health and medical establishments have at their disposal communications options capable of addressing most any conveyance want or need. The marketing communications mix, once somewhat limited due to industry tradition, is now fully accessible and widely used in the health services industry, providing immense opportunities to connect with patients. Options for signage, building designs, servicescape amenities, employee uniforms, and the like also are teeming, providing myriad avenues for making positive impressions. But burgeoning options while beneficial also intensify obligations for ensuring that marketing communications are properly integrated, with this particular article describing this imperative need and its implications for communicative success in the healthcare industry. Background
Communicating successfully with current and prospective
patients represents an essential and ongoing task for
health and medical establishments [13]. Excellence on
this front is vital for many reasons, with perhaps the most
notable being that effective communications inform and
enlighten audiences, generating interest and attention,
prerequisites for attracting patients and acquiring market
share [2,46]. Communications, of course, must be ap-
pealing to target markets, necessitating steps to ensure
positive portrayals at every opportunity, with healthcare
establishments turning to many promotional mechanisms
to engage desired patient populations. In such pursuits,
perhaps the first avenues that come to mind are the out-
ward conveyances of advertising, public relations, sales

promotion, and other components of the traditional mar-
keting communications mix, with these pathways being
traversed extensively by health and medical organizations
in bids to connect with audiences [2,4,7,8].
Indeed, the components of the marketing communica-
tions mix are tried and true methods for engaging pa-
tient populations, but they are not the only avenues
available for doing so. Other prominent communicators
also exist, including the people employed by healthcare
institutions, the places in which services are delivered,
and the brands that represent given establishments,
affording extended means for informing and enlighten-
ing customer groups [2,4,7,912]. This wide variety of
communicative mechanisms, however, is somewhat of a
mixed blessing. While the burgeoning array of options
affords tremendous utility, healthcare providers must
direct extra care and attention when assembling associ-
ated conveyances to ensure cohesion between and
among promotional elements. Such cohesion yields inte-
grated marketing communications which should be a
strategic priority for health and medical establishments.
This particular article shares a range of insights on inte-
grated marketing communications, providing useful
guidance for healthcare organizations seeking to bolster
their patient engagement efforts.
Discussion
Now more than ever, health and medical establishments
have at their disposal communications options capable of
addressing most any conveyance want or need. Today,
healthcare institutions routinely make use of the full mar-
keting communications mix, calling upon its five compo-
nents of advertising, personal selling, sales promotion,
public relations, and direct marketing as desired to reach
their target audiences [2,4,13]. This starkly contrasts with
prevailing healthcare industry mindsets of the not-so-
distant past (ca. 1980s and earlier) which frowned on
using the full power of the marketing communications
mix. Notably, advertising was viewed to be beneath the
dignity of medical providers and potentially detrimental to
established patient referral patterns. But associated resist-
ance ended in the 1980s, aided notably by governmental
scrutiny of the American Medical Associations ban on its
membersuse of advertising, paving the way for advertis-
ing to flourish, making the marketing communications
mix fully accessible and acceptable for use in the health
services industry [1,5,7,9].
Beyond the components of the marketing communica-
tions mix, foundational elementspeople, places, and
things that communicate on behalf of healthcare institu-
tionsalso present more opportunities than ever to make
positive, enduring impressions. Cutting edge training pro-
grams, stylish uniforms, and the like have the potential to
dramatically elevate the actions and appearances of
healthcare personnel; modern exterior and interior sign-
age options, especially digital variants, are capable of cap-
turing attention like never before; and contemporary
servicescape designs and associated amenities have the
power to greatly impress and inspire target audiences.
These and similar elements convey volumes of informa-
tion to others, arguably projecting details as robustly as
anything within the traditional marketing communica-
tions mix, crucially impacting the perspectives of current
and prospective patients and presenting immense oppor-
tunities to influence associated patronage decisions [2,4,
7,912].
But burgeoning communicative options, while benefi-
cial, also intensify obligations for ensuring that marketing
communications deployed by given healthcare institutions
are properly integrated to present a cohesive picture to
target audiences. Integrated marketing communications
(IMC) happens to be a formal term in the discipline of
marketing. It is defined as the coordination of all of the
marketing communications efforts of an organization for
the purpose of ensuring the consistent presentation of
promotional messages to target audiences[2], p. 286.
Essentially, achieving integrated marketing communica-
tions yields a highly-desired communicative state where
all conveyances telegraphed by an establishment over a
given period of time are linked together. This typically is
realized through the use of a defined collection of verbal
and visual manifestations (e.g., logos, slogans, color
schemes, themes), leading audiences to view each commu-
nication to be part of a comprehensive body of work pre-
senting the establishment clearly and cohesively.
Integration effectively creates synergies between and
among all of the promotional elements deployed by an
organization, amplifying the impact potential of commu-
nicative efforts [2,4,1416].
In the absence of such integration, communicative ele-
ments lack effective linkages. Imagine, for example, a
scenario where a healthcare establishment, on adopting
a new slogan, updates its advertising to feature the new
expression, but neglects to revise its other promotional
materials, accordingly. Similarly, consider a situation
where corporate colors have been updated, but some
marketing communications continue to make use of the
former color array. Given different creative treatments,
communicative synergies cannot be leveraged, diminish-
ing impact that otherwise would be possible via proper
communicative integration. Indeed, the necessity for in-
tegrating marketing communications is so pronounced
that entire textbooks have been written on the topic
(e.g., [1721]), demonstrating its associated value and
importance.
Achieving a marketing communications presence that
would be considered to be integrated requires extensive
attention to detail. As various forms of promotion are

developed, efforts must be directed toward ensuring that
they work in harmony together, creating a cohesive, in-
terrelated body of work [2,4]. As content which portrays
healthcare establishments (e.g., signage, advertisements,
sales promotions, websites, stationery, direct mail) usu-
ally is produced over time, the need for vigilance is quite
obvious, as without such, incongruence can appear in
the verbal and visual artifacts representing institutions,
undermining efforts to achieve and maintain integration
between and among components. Such incongruence
can range from subtle (e.g., an updated font for use on
business cards and letterhead is introduced, but
stationery featuring the old font continues to be circu-
lated) to very obvious (e.g., a logo is revised, but signage
continues to display the former identity), with such in-
consistencies, regardless of magnitude, undermining
communicative power and potential [4].
To foster presentation of a consistent image across all
marketing communications, health and medical establish-
ments can benefit by developing a creative style guide, a
comprehensive marketing communications document
which presents depictions of approved verbal and visual
elements representing given institutions and supplies de-
tailed guidelines for their use. The exact composition of
such guides is dependent on the wants and needs of given
healthcare establishments, but typical areas that are ad-
dressed include (1) logos, noting their proper display, use,
and associated restrictions, (2) creative treatments, outlin-
ing approved typography, color schemes, and associated
stylistic elements, (3) messaging characteristics, noting
approved slogans, storylines, and related content, (4) audi-
ence profiles, indicating served markets, associated targets,
and demographic attributes, (5) communication avenues,
identifying components of the marketing communications
mix and any supplementary communications pathways
that are to be pursued, and (6) authorization processes,
outlining protocols for presenting assembled communica-
tions to institutional leaders for review and approval, per-
mitting dissemination.
The activity of developing these guides, in and of itself, is
helpful in that it forces institutional leaders to think deeply
on the verbal and visual manifestations which represent their
given organizations, providing an opportunity to examine
and potentially improve methods and manners of presenting
their establishments to target audiences. This also aids in
achieving communicative cohesion, as components are de-
veloped in an orderly fashion, something which avoids patch-
work assembly methods which inadvertently can foster
incongruity [2,4,10,22]. The all-important authorization
process is also addressed, further ensuring compliance with
designated standards. By adhering to defined creative proto-
cols, a clear identity emerges, essentially yielding consistent
creative signatures which amplify all marketing communica-
tions forwarded on behalf of healthcare institutions.
In the 1970s, a particularly formative time period for
the institution, Willis-Knighton Health System laid the
groundwork for enduring integrated marketing commu-
nications by focusing on creative treatments and applica-
tions, with one of the most essential being the
development of an appealing logo. Today, this logo is

one of the most widely recognized in the marketplace
and it anchors virtually every communication forwarded
by the institution [9,10]. Coupled with consistent color
schemes, slogans, and manners and methods of presen-
tation, Willis-Knighton Health Systems particular cre-
ative treatment, regardless of the service line to which it
is applied, builds communicative bridges between and
among each and every conveyance, naturally supplying
the critical linkages that afford integrated marketing
communications, as the sample billboard and newspaper
advertisements, provided in Figs. 1and 2, and the
sample television commercials, available at https://www.
wkhs.com/video/commercials, illustrate.
Applications of Willis-Knighton Health Systems cre-
ative style are not limited to conveyances of the trad-
itional marketing communications mix; they influence
decisions pertaining to anything which communicates
on behalf of the institution, guiding signage decisions,
employee uniform designs, and so on, yielding a univer-
sal creative portrayal of the institution to its audiences.
Such results stem from the devoted use of a creative
style guide which, once assembled and approved, directs
the development and dissemination of content, provid-
ing reasonable assurances that presentations and por-
trayals of given institutions will be consistent.
A healthcare establishments achievement of integrated
marketing communications is best ascertained by view-
ing the totality of communicative elements deployed by
the given institution. Interior and exterior signage,
stationery, employee uniforms, promotional brochures,
advertisements, direct mail pieces, website designs and
associated promotional content, and more should be ex-
amined comprehensively. If each element when viewed
individually appears to be part of the larger body of
work, then integration pursuits can be deemed to have
been successful. If not, corrective actions need to be
taken to bring noncompliant promotional elements into
compliance with the communicative aims expressed in
the associated creative style guide, affording harmony
between and among all conveyances.
While the concept of integrated marketing communica-
tions might seem so obvious as to not warrant discussion,
environmental complexities, propensities to lose sight of
the bigger picture, routine distractions, and the like have
the potential to undermine and erode efforts to ensure co-
hesion between and among communicative components.
As noted earlier, if proper attention is not directed toward
the assembly and management of elements promoting
healthcare establishments, incongruence eventually will
emerge, diminishing the communicative power and poten-
tial of given expressions. The introduction and use of cre-
ative style guides, coupled with ongoing discussions
regarding the importance of integrated marketing com-
munications, will help healthcare establishments stay on
course for achieving harmony across all communications,
reaping associated benefits.
Conclusions
By integrating marketing communications, health and
medical providers are able to portray themselves clearly
and consistently to their audiences, something that is ab-
solutely essential for the best communicative outcomes.
Further, synergies will emerge between and among the de-
ployed conveyance mechanisms, amplifying performance
and increasing the likelihood of reaching communicative

goals, ultimately improving the return on investment gen-
erated by the associated marketing communications.
Achieving such cohesion requires devoted planning in an
effort to coordinate verbal and visual manifestations to ex-
press desired imagery and appeals to target audiences,
with guiding protocols and reminders to maintain integra-
tion being essential as a defense against oversights and dis-
tractions which could lead to communications
incongruence. As extensive benefits are derived from inte-
grated marketing communications, healthcare establish-
ments should consider associated pursuits to be a
strategic priority.

JLF Jr. is Chair of the James K. Elrod Department of Health Administration,
James K. Elrod Professor of Health Administration, and Professor of Marketing
in the College of Business at LSU Shreveport where he teaches a variety of
courses in both health administration and marketing. He holds a BBA in
marketing from the University of Mississippi; an MBA from Mississippi
College; a PhD in public administration and public policy, with
concentrations in health administration, human resource management, and
organization theory, from Auburn University; and a PhD in business

This study investigates the mediating role of marketing strategies on the relationships between healthcare provider-related factors and patients' healthcare utilization. Adopting a descriptive cross-sectional quantitative design, the study utilizes a survey method to collect responses from 322 sampled healthcare professionals, using simple random sampling from a population of 1980 who work in public clinics and Community Health Planning Services (CHPS). The theory underpinning this study is the Andersen Behavioural Model of Health Service Utilization. Structural Equation Modelling technique was adopted to analyze and test the hypotheses. The study revealed that provider-related factors significantly and positively influenced healthcare utilization (β = 0.355, t = 3.406, p < 0.001). Furthermore, provider-related factors also had a direct and positive relationship with marketing strategies (β = 0.534, t = 7.283, p = 0.000). Marketing strategies also significantly and positively influenced healthcare utilization (β = 0.432, t = 5.366, p = 0.000). Conversely, the moderating influence of provider-related factors on the relationship between marketing strategies and healthcare utilization was significant (β = 0.456, t = 4.892, p = 0.000). The study concludes that marketing strategies mediate the relationship between provider-related factors and healthcare utilization. Thus, it is recommended that integrating marketing strategies into health planning and healthcare delivery by managers of health institutions can strengthen and facilitate health promotion and education.

Hospitals use their websites to reinforce their relationships with stakeholders and build the brand collectively; however, they face challenges such as patients’ new needs or strict legal frameworks. This paper analyzes how Australia’s best hospitals manage their websites to implement content strategies that help them build their brands collectively with stakeholders. We conducted a literature review about smart hospitals, their corporate communication initiatives, and their online content strategies. Then, we identified 40 brand indicators to analyze how Australia’s best hospitals used their websites to interact with healthcare professionals, patients, media companies, and shareholders. We proved that most hospitals had sections for these targets (healthcare professionals -72.06%-, patients -85.51%-, media companies -98.53%, shareholders 100%-); however, they only respected, on average, 14.06 brand indicators. We concluded that Australian hospitals should follow a more emotional communication approach, make their brands more present on their website, and increase their collaborations with media companies.

Medical humanities are the soul of health education. Humanistic education proposes to improve the conscious and practical activities of educated people and promote their humanity, realize personal and social values, cultivate ideal personalities, and develop a trans-cultural humanistic spirit. The development of higher education has considerably strengthened the integration of scientific and humanistic education in China. This study analyzed the up-to-date teaching situation of medical humanities courses in medical schools considering the following aspects: teachers’ team construction, teaching mode, practical teaching, assessment and evaluation systems, and inadequate platforms. Relevant reforms based on life education were proposed, including improving the integrity of the teaching team, building suitable curriculum system and teaching theory, setting proper evaluation standard for both students and teachers, and providing adequate platforms for practice of humanistic medicine. This study aimed to promote the students’ medical humanities literacy, thus providing potential strategy and reference for improving medical humanistic education.

Digital marketing is essential for SMEs to achieve and maintain a competitive advantage. This study investigates the influence of digital marketing literacy and employee engagement in digital marketing campaigns on marketing performance, with internal marketing culture, government policy, and market competitiveness as moderating factors. The research uses a quantitative survey method, targeting SMEs in West Java active in digital marketing. Pur-posive sampling yielded 240 respondents. Data were collected via questionnaires and analyzed using Smart PLS 3 to test the relationships in the conceptual model. Results indicate that digital marketing literacy does not significantly impact marketing performance. However, employee engagement in digital marketing campaigns positively and significantly affects marketing performance. Internal marketing culture enhances the impact of digital marketing literacy and employee engagement on marketing performance. Government policy and market competitiveness do not significantly moderate the effect of digital marketing literacy on marketing performance, but market competitiveness does moderate the impact of employee engagement on marketing performance. This study uncovers new insights about how digital marketing works in SMEs and concludes by recognizing the crucial influence of employee involvement on enhancing marketing performance. This can be a significant advantage in SMEs; visibility and competitiveness are points to always consider, and involving employees in digital marketing efforts is one of them.

The primary objective is to provide patients with excellent medical care and positive practice. The methods are intended to increase the confidence and trustworthiness while giving them a unique and memorable experience. Digital marketing is one of the most critical marketing strategies for healthcare services. Social media, Search Engine Optimisation (SEO), and other powerful techniques are required to attract new patients and keep them interested in the hospital. Another strategy to encourage current patients to tell their friends about the hospital is to use patient referral programmes and word-of-mouth advertising. Hospitals resort to different initiatives to build their brands, including media relations, events, and marketing campaigns. However, they face several challenges related to legal frameworks, patients’ new demands, and hospitals’ digital transformation. This paper analyzes how the best hospitals in France manage smart technologies to enhance their relationships with stakeholders and reinforce their brands. We resorted to the World’s Best Hospitals 2023 to identify the 150 best hospitals in this country. Then, we defined 34 branding indicators to evaluate how each hospital managed smart technologies for branding purposes. We adapted these criteria to different platforms and targets: homepage (patients), online newsroom (media companies), About Us section (suppliers, shareholders, and public authorities), and artificial intelligence department (employees). When analyzing these criteria, we resorted to a binary system and only considered hospitals’ official websites. Our results proved that 98% of hospitals had a website, but not all respected the criteria related to the homepage (4.54 of 11), online newsroom (2.52 of 11), or About Us section (1.56 of 6). The best hospitals in France, according to the number of criteria respected, were Institut Curie-Oncology (20), Institut Gustave Roussy–Oncology (19), and Hôpital Paris Saint-Joseph (19). We concluded that French hospitals should implement collective branding processes that include all stakeholders, not just patients: media companies, public authorities, suppliers, shareholders, and employees. Moreover, these organizations should implement an in-house artificial intelligence department that leads a digital transformation from a medical, branding, and communication perspective. Finally, French hospitals’ branding efforts on smart platforms should focus more on content about the brand so that stakeholders understand the uniqueness of these organizations.

This community service activity aims to help ecotourism business actors to increase visits through destination branding strategies. The problem faced by ecotourism business players is that business income has barely developed, especially after the pandemic. One of the Micro, Small and Medium Enterprise sectors affected is hand-written batik. This assistance and training was provided to the Malang Mangrove Batik MSME Group, which consists of 40 members of Batik entrepreneurs throughout Malang City Regency. The lack of visitors and purchasing power which is still only starting to increase after the pandemic also has an impact on the income of MSMEs. Apart from that, several problems with mangrove tourism are caused by not optimal social media branding, lack of cooperation from local communities for branding, lack of information on tourist destinations in mass media, lack of massive campaigns on social media, lack of understanding of the potential and uniqueness of mangrove tourism, etc. have a mangrove tourism promotion strategy plan. This activity seeks to restore income for MSMEs through a destination branding strategy for mangrove batik ecotourism. One of the efforts made is branding mangrove batik. This activity includes 5 stages starting from market analysis, brand identity, brand launch and introduction, brand implementation, and monitoring/evaluation. The results of branding activities show a significant increase in awareness of mangrove batik both in terms of brand, engagement and market segmentation.

The decrease in the effectiveness of conventional marketing communications and the need to optimize marketing budgets require modern non-network players in the finishing materials market to take a more balanced approach to the formation of an integrated set of communication tools. Within the framework of this study, four types of marketing information transmission channels were identified. A tiered approach was used for typing, based on determining the type and number of communication intermediaries between a non-network seller and a buyer of finishing materials. A list of opportunities and threats of using a communication channel is defined for each type, which allows operationalizing the process of developing marketing communications. In order to optimize the procedure of developing a marketing communications package, lists of relevant marketing communications tools were formed, ranked by the degree of influence on sales volumes. To conduct the research, methods of included observation, survey and analysis of marketing internal reporting documents were used. The objects of observation - non-network sellers of finishing materials in the Siberian Federal District. The respondents - specialists who make decisions on the integration of marketing communications.

The performance of a health care organization is impacted by how its management handles problems caused by disruptions in communication and shows concern for the ongoing enhancement of the communication process. Any health care organization's marketing communication approach is essential since it has an impact on both personnel and consumer satisfaction. From the perspective of physiotherapists, the current study aims to explore the connections between the perceived quality of health care services, marketing communications and job satisfaction. The sample comprised 114 individuals, the majority of whom were women, and whose average age was 39,74 (±9,56). Their average experience in the health care organization was 12,44 years (± 8,95). A self-administered questionnaire that contained socio-demographic items and specific items to collect data about the importance of marketing communication, job satisfaction, and perceived quality, was used as the research instrument. The results revealed that physiotherapists' job satisfaction is positively influenced by both marketing communication and the perceived quality of care. However, to be more effective, health care managers need to offer specialized trainings to physiotherapists in order to motivate them and strengthen reliability and responsiveness when providing services.

Reports from the advertising industry suggest that the pressure to create effective integrated campaigns across the ever-increasing mix of paid, owned and earned media is putting an enormous strain on client/agency relationships. This research identifies the main challenges that an Integrated Marketing Communication (IMC) approach places on this relationship and thereby advances the IMC literature by examining the practical challenges of implementation. Six key issues, developed from academic and industry sources, are presented to advertising experts, through a Delphi study, to stimulate debate and identify areas of agreement. The findings are brought together in a model which presents three main areas that need to be addressed, along with specific recommendations. These topics include the need for clients to provide stronger leadership in defining agency roles and responsibilities, more transparent remuneration systems to encourage teamwork across agencies as well as individual input and an increased emphasis on the strategic contribution from agencies.

Background Given the importance of communicating effectively with current and prospective patients, healthcare institutions must direct considerable energies toward achieving associated excellence. Pursuits usually center on addressing the marketing communications mix properly, but in order to maximize communications prowess, attention also should be directed toward incorporating emerging communications innovations, when and where possible, to bolster opportunities to connect with patients. Discussion In pursuit of communications excellence, Willis-Knighton Health System’s executives reflected on campus dynamics in the context of modern outdoor advertising technologies, namely, digital billboards, which present electronic advertisements on-demand, around-the-clock. They surmised that, with Willis-Knighton Health System’s campuses being positioned in highly-visible fashion along highly-transited roadways, the institution could deploy this relatively new roadside advertising innovation to better engage audiences. This particular train of thought ultimately led to the installation of digital billboards at several of its locations. This article profiles the development of Willis-Knighton Health System’s new marketing communications asset and offers advice for healthcare establishments desirous of placing digital billboards onsite to better connect with patients. Conclusions Opportunities affording enriched communications with patients should continually be sought by health and medical entities. Digital billboards, institutionally-owned and operated, supply one such opportunity, pairing a state-of-the-art, uniquely-capable advertising medium with the excellent locational characteristics possessed by many healthcare establishments. Background Modern marketing thought heavily emphasizes the need for healthcare providers to possess a customer orientation, placing patients at the focal point of attention within health and medical establishments. This has motivated significant investments in tools and techniques that foster outstanding service, attention, and support. Such investments in isolation, however, offer no guarantees that a true customer orientation will emerge. Proper implementation also is required—and that falls on the shoulders of health and medical personnel. Discussion The most innovative and expensive of customer-oriented tools and techniques mean very little unless they are placed in the hands of capable individuals possessing the ability and desire to serve patients well. But the rigors of industry life complicate matters, resulting occasionally in lost focus, compromising the patient experience. One of the simplest and most effective methods for encouraging patient attentiveness rests with a reflective exercise that encourages staff members to see themselves and their actions from the perspective of patients. Asking the operative question, “Am I seeing things through the eyes of patients?” serves as an effective reminder of priorities, building empathy and motivating personnel to continually deliver their very best. Conclusions Viewing one’s actions from the perspective of patients can be very revealing, opening eyes wide and permitting opportunities for any necessary improvements, making for a simple but powerful learning experience. The “Am I seeing things through the eyes of patients?” reflective exercise helps well-intentioned staff members avoid tendencies which can lull them into states of complacency, ensuring that they remain focused on those in their care.

Background Branding—the assignment of names, logos, slogans, and related elements of identity to institutions and their product offerings for the purpose of conveying desired images to target audiences—is of paramount importance in the health services industry. Associated initiatives traditionally have centered on developing verbal and visual brand expressions, but opportunities abound to drive brand equity by supplementing traditional pursuits with new, different, and unexpected expressions that afford highly memorable experiences. Discussion Willis-Knighton Health System has possessed an expanded view of branding for decades. While the system has directed thorough attention toward traditional brand expressions, additional identity opportunities outside the bounds of traditional branding thought have been pursued vigorously. There perhaps is no better illustration of Willis-Knighton Health System’s expanded approach to branding than that of Willis the Bear, the institution’s iconic teddy bear mascot developed to promote labor and delivery services. This article presents the origins and development of this brand expression, particularly emphasizing the need to address nontraditional elements of identity for purposes of driving brand equity. Conclusions Given the importance of brand management and extraction of associated value, health services organizations must diligently direct attention toward branding initiatives. Traditional approaches, when executed well, deliver excellent results, but enhanced value can be derived by addressing nontraditional brand elements which afford unique opportunities to differentiate given establishments from their competitors, facilitating institutional viability and vitality.

Background Marketing arguably is the most critical administrative responsibility associated with the pursuit and realization of growth and prosperity, making prowess in the discipline essential for any healthcare institution, especially given the competitive intensity that characterizes the industry. But in order to truly gain an advantage, healthcare establishments must tap into innovative pathways that their competitors have yet to discover. Here, thinking like an outsider can pay tremendous dividends, as health and medical organizations tend to focus inwardly, limiting their exposure to externally-derived innovations and advancements which often can supply differentiation opportunities. Discussion Some years ago, during a formative period in preparation for expanding its footprint, Willis-Knighton Health System opted to think like an outsider, peering beyond the walls of healthcare institutions in search of tools and techniques that would allow its growth ambitions to be realized. Associated pursuits and subsequent successes created a culture of challenging status quo perspectives, affording innovations and resulting competitive advantages. Marketing advancements, in particular, have been fueled by this outsider mentality, benefiting the institution and its patient populations. This article profiles several of these advancements, discusses the dangers of insular mindsets, and suggests avenues for encouraging broad perspectives. Conclusions Due to extreme competitive intensity and ever-increasing patient needs, health and medical establishments must perform at optimal levels, with marketing efforts playing a critical role in the achievement of such. Background Healthcare establishments serve as key community resources, bringing into locales a wealth of resources aimed at enhancing and improving health and wellness. Without effective communications, current and prospective patients will remain unaware of available offerings, foiling opportunities for mutually beneficial exchange. Today, healthcare organizations engage audiences by selecting from among the components of the marketing communications mix, but this wasn’t always the case. There was a time not long ago when communications options were limited due to industry traditions, creating associated challenges. Discussion Willis-Knighton Health System faced a communications dilemma in the 1970s when, as a small healthcare provider desirous of growth, it could not achieve a satisfactory media presence via the usual and customary route of the day: submitting press releases to news media organizations, requesting conveyance of associated stories to their audiences. This forced the institution to explore other possibilities, ultimately leading it to experiment with and embrace advertising at a time period when its use was generally shunned in the industry. Willis-Knighton Health System’s pioneering deployment of advertising helped the institution achieve its intended promotions goals, supplying mutual benefits and affording insights which influence its communications approach to this day. Conclusions Deploying advertising years in advance of its widespread acceptance and use in the healthcare industry, Willis-Knighton Health System forged new pathways and acquired experience which fostered provider-patient engagement initiatives, affording an enduring marketing communications approach. The future of advertising and marketing communications will be marked by an increasingly diverse collection of new digital options added to the traditional media and communication options already available to marketers. By taking advantage of the unique strengths of different communication options, and combining them and sequencing them strategically, marketers have the opportunity to drive sales and build brands in ways never before possible. Doing so, however, will require new concepts, new tools, and new thinking. Toward that goal, this article describes seven integrated marketing communications (IMC) choice criteria that marketers can use to judge how effectively and efficiently they have assembled their IMC programs. The article also outlines five priority areas for future research to help further guide the successful design and implementation of IMC programs.

The practice of marketing is widely called upon in the healthcare industry to reach outward, attracting prospective customers in hopes of gaining their patronage.
