Johnny Rice II, public administrator, researcher and native of Baltimore provides a review of the groundbreaking documentary, "Bastards of the Party" developed by Athens Park Bloods gang member Cle 'Bone' Sloan. The essay explores Sloan's journey into gang life and his revisiting of social, political, cultural, and economic factors that he perceives are causal factors for the growth and development of gang membership and culture. Mr. Rice considers the unique lens of Sloan as a gang member and considers the gang members personal quest to better understand his role in the destruction of the Black community as a perpetrator of violence. Recommendations offered by Sloan as means to curb gang violence are highlighted.
