Aim of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of powder milk and whey, which is included among the basic substances against grapevine powdery mildew. Two field trials were carried out in a commercial vineyard located in Tebano di Faenza (RA) over two-year period 2018-2019. The study consisted of repeated applications of the tested products at 6-8 days interval throughout the season. The powder milk for zootechnical use showed the best performance when used at a dose of 3 Kg/100 L numerically higher than sulfur used at a dose of 0.6 and 0.5 Kg/100 L either in the trial of 2018 and 2019. Same result was obtained by using whey at a dosage of 4.5 Kg/100 L, while an always excellent efficacy, even though slightly lower, was obtained when used at a dose of 3 Kg / 100 L.

A field trial was carried out in 2017 in an apple orchard cv Hi Early, comparing boric acid with an untreated check and a reference standard, applying the products preventatively at weekly intervals. In all the trials boric acid was statistically superior to the untreated check. The results of the semi-field trials demonstrated a good preventive and curative activity of boric acid (> 70%) on leaves, with an efficacy level similar to that provided by difenoconazole, used as reference standard. The field trial on the primary infections of apple scab showed an efficacy level close to 70% also on the fruits, statistically similar to that provided by the reference dithianon. No phytotoxicity was observed on the treated crop.

A warning system was developed for early-season powdery mildew control based on (i) short-term weather forecasts, (ii) a model that simulates the severity of each E. necator ascosporic infection, and (iii) a mobile phone short-message system. This warning system was evaluated in six vineyards in northern Italy from 2006 to 2008, between bud break of vines and early berry development; an unsprayed control was compared with "low-risk" and "high-risk" model-driven sprays and a calendar-based "grower" spray program. Use of the warning system reduced disease severity on leaves and bunches compared with the unsprayed control and resulted in the same level of control of powdery mildew as the grower's spray program, with reduced fungicide applications and costs. On average, 5.7 sprays were applied following the grower's spray program (with an average cost of 221 (sic)/ha/year); use of the warning system reduced fungicide applications by 36% (low-risk program, saving of 56 (sic)/ha/year) or 75% (high-risk program, saving of 161 (sic)/ha/year).

The field trials basically involved powdery mildicide products, whereas against downy mildew, Copper-Oxychloride was tank mix applied for all treatments. The program of applications which included the alternation of Sulphur and Quinoxyfen gave the best results against powdery mildew with a moderate impact on phytoseiids. Typhlodromus exhilaratus Ragusa and Phytoseius finitimus Ribaga sensu Denmark (1966) were the phytoseiids detected. Both predatory mites showed a strong resistance to the various strategies used.
