Records of Solenosthedium bilunatum (Lefèbvre, 1827) on the
Italian island of Ustica and the Spanish island of Ibiza
(Hemiptera: Heteroptera: Scutelleridae).

Abstract: Records of Solenosthedium bilunatum (Lefèbvre, 1827) (Hemiptera: Heteroptera: Scutelleridae) from the
Italian island of Ustica and the Spanish island of Ibiza are reported. The European distribution of the species is
summarized and discussed.

Ibiza (Hemiptera: Heteroptera: Scutelleridae). Se presentan citas de Solenosthedium bilunatum (Lefèbvre, 1827)
(Hemiptera: Heteroptera: Scutelleridae) de la isla italiana de Ustica y la isla española de Ibiza. Se resume y discute la
distribución europea de la especie.

Solenosthedium bilunatum (Lefèbvre, 1827) (Hemiptera: Heteroptera: Scutelleridae) is a
Mediterranean scutellerid belonging to the subfamily Elvisurinae. So far, the species has been reported
from the following European countries: France (mainland, Corsica), Croatia (mainland, Korčula), Cyprus,
Greece, Italy (mainland, Sardinia, Sicily), Malta, Portugal and Spain (mainland, Mallorca) (Josifov, 1986;
Matocq & Pluot-Sigwalt, 2002; Göllner-Scheiding, 2006; Gogala, 2008; Dusoulier et al., 2016; Škorput et
al., 2019). Dusoulier et al. (2016), referring to Göllner-Scheiding (2006) and Aukema et al. (2013),
stated that S. bilunatum was reported from Albania, but this cannot be verified checking the mentioned
publications.
Heckmann & Rieger (2001) reported a single specimen found on endive salad in a supermarket in
the German city of Ludwigsburg (Baden-Württemberg). Most likely, this specimen was transported to
Germany with imported vegetables from the Mediterranean Region.
On 16.08.2008, (at least) two nymphs of S. bilunatum (Fig. 1) were found and photographed in
the southwestern part of the Italian island of Ustica by Mathia Coco. Three photos of that finding were
uploaded to the online database iNaturalist.org (Coco, 2020).
Furthermore, two adult specimens of S. bilunatum were found on the island of Ibiza: Juan Pérez
uploaded a photo of a specimen (Fig. 2) taken in 2010 in Sant Antoni de Portmany to the online database
BiodiversidadVirtual.org (Pérez, 2010). On 04.03.2020, another specimen of S. bilunatum was
photographed in the same town by J. Agustín García. The photo was uploaded to the online database
iNaturalist.org (Agustín García, 2020).
These records have not been reported in scientific publications yet and seem to be the first
ones for the islands of Ustica and Ibiza.
