Closing the Logistics Emissions Disclosure Gap: An Analysis of Emissions Disclosure to CDP by Corporations Worldwide

Progress to decarbonize our freight transportation networks needs to accelerate if we are to meet our global climate goals. Smart Freight Centre and CDP believe that transparency on carbon emissions is key to achieving these goals. CDP disclosure can be used to inform corporate climate goals, investment ratings, procurement programs, and strategies to transition to a low- carbon, net zero economy. The Global Logistics Emissions Council (GLEC) Framework, developed by Smart Freight Centre with input from the GLEC partner- ship, is the global method to help companies to calculate and disclose freight transport emissions, including to CDP and the Science-Based Targets initiative.

Rail intermodal is facing capacity constraints in Dhaka rail Inland Container Depot (ICD), and river intermodal is under-utilized for the shortage of hinterland logistics facilities, the mindset of users, and poor terminal productivity. This research applied the quantitative method to analyze the port throughput of Chattogram Port and its hinterland connectivity by nodes to get innovation and sustainability to identify environmental factors in international freight movement economically. On the basis of a literature review, and explored research gaps before data analysis, it is clear that environmental factors including SDGs are not considered in the inland freight transportation systems of Bangladesh. The research findings alerted that people in the freight movement system do not present a wide awareness of their activities and due diligence to environmental sustainability in creating a wider room for the next generations. The quantitative analysis of port throughput data indicated to increase in the share of intermodal especially river intermodal which has a wider scope to use available river ports in all parts of the country naturally. The practical impact of the research is to formulate a long-term environmental strategy in freight transport, corporate execution by all transport business-oriented companies/organizations, and enabling technologies in inland freight operations and monitoring. Overall, this paper provides a conceptual framework for the environmental sustainability of inland freight transportation systems in Bangladesh in doing international shipping and trade.

Since the 1990s, studies and pilot tests have been conducted to reduce traffic, accidents, and pollution due to urban freight transport (UFT). These ended up in several policies, regulations, and restrictions for UFT, such as low emission zones, delivery time windows, and vehicle size and weight restrictions. [Show full abstract] optimization framework for deriving an optimal combination of various types of vehicles with different capacities for vehicle replacement with UFT. This framework allows an understanding of how an urban freight company with a limited budget efficiently satisfies its freight demand within an urban area in the presence of regulatory measures by urban administrators. The introduced formulation, which is mixed-integer linear programming, will assist the operator in choosing the best investment strategy for introducing new vehicles of certain types and sizes, for operation in different zones, into its fleet while gaining economic benefits and having a positive impact on the liveability of the urban area. Furthermore, an elasticity analysis is performed to consider the effects of specific uncertain parameters on the total cost. The numerical results show that the share of electric vehicles in the fleet increases, and they are more competitive than diesel vehicles.

It was revealed that the digital transformation of supply chain management is the main tool for improving the efficiency of China’s railway logistics system. Within the framework of scientific novelty, a range of basic elements of digital transformation and digital solutions are indicated that can be included in each of the areas of railway transport management. The prospects for the development of supply chain management of China’s railway logistics system in the view of “One Belt, One Road” initiative are identified and the corresponding innovative digital tools in the field of logistics are justified. It is concluded that the use of the latest digital technologies by rail carriers contributes to high performance and maintaining a competitive position in the logistics market, which is an integral part of the transition to sustainable rail freight transport.
