Abstract

Monografija Čitanje u ranoj adolescenciji financirana je u sklopu Erasmus plus projekta Boys reading koji je dobio dvogodišnje financiranje za razdoblje od 2014. do 2016. godine i provodio se na tri razine: međunarodne suradnje u prijenosu ideja dobre prakse, implementaciji dobre prakse i istraživanju glavnih postavki i rezultata implementacije dobre prakse. Lista autora čiji su radovi sastavni dio ove publikacije ukazuje na različita područja znanstvenog bavljenja. Različite studije prikazane kroz poglavlja ove znanstvene monografije rezultat su istraživačkih aktivnosti koje su se provodile u okviru projekta Boys reading, ali i neovisnih studija koje su se u istom vremenskom razdoblju provodile u Republici Hrvatskoj. Sadržajno, ova monografija namijenjena je znanstvenicima, istraživačima, nastavnicima i studentima koji se bave područjem pismenosti, motivacije i uključenosti u čitanje, postignućima u čitalačkoj pismenosti i rodnim razlikama s obzirom na motivaciju i čitalačka postignuća. Monografija je podijeljena u tri dijela i njima pripadajuća poglavlja. Prvi dio uključuje četiri poglavlja s radovima o poticanju čitanja i stavovima prema čitanju. Drugi dio posvećen je temi poticanja čitanja kroz kurikulum i uključuje tri poglavlja, dok se u trećem dijelu u koji su uvrštena tri rada progovara se o čitateljskim navikama studenata te ulozi medija u razvijanju čitalačke pismenosti.

This paper examines extracurricular reading in third-grade students. The aim was to investigate whether the place of residence affected independent choice of literary works and authors. The research was conducted in different parts of Croatia, in rural and urban communities. The survey included a questionnaire with ten closed questions and five open questions. The results of the closed questions are presented graphically (by using graphs), while the results of the open questions are presented numerically. The results show that high percentage of students read books and wrote book reports, but in certain environments the students were more interested in poetry, while in the others they were more interested in detective stories. However, all of them loved fairytales, fables and comic novels, so the authors suggest that more of those genres should be introduced into school libraries. The results did not indicate the links between the place of residence of the examinees and the place where the stories take place, or between the writers' origin and the choice of reading material. The most important factor was how well the students could identify with the characters.

In a system of primar education, initial lessons of reading and writing are fundemental components of learning (teaching) mother language (national language). As the basic point for classes (lessons) of mother language, initial lessons of reading and writing have a specific task which are defined in teaching curiculum. nitial lessons of reading and writing are also the fundaments for comprehension of all other teaching subjects which individual person meets through a whole education.

Sixty-nine grade 2 boys participated in a study of the effects of book genre and sex of reading model on boys’ (a) view of reading as feminine, (b) intrinsic motivation toward reading, (c) interest in reading, and (d) attitude to reading. Differential effects occurred in boys based on whether they liked or disliked reading and whether they viewed reading as a feminine activity. Findings are examined in the context of gender schema theory as a way of explaining why boy-friendly books are important to some boys’ reading development and not to that of others.

The problems of boys in schools, especially in reading and writing, have been the focus of statistical data, but rarely does research point out how literacy educators can combat those problems. Michael Smith and Jeff Wilhelm worked with a very diverse group of young men to understand how they use literacy and what conditions promote it. In this book they share what they have learned. The authors' data-driven findings explain why boys reject much of school literacy and how progressive curricula and instruction might help boys engage with literacy and all learning in more productive ways.
