Summary
Rempicci, M. & S. Buono (2020): Dactylorhiza ×serbica nsubsp. serbica, a
new hybrid for Latium (central Italy).- J. Eur. Orch. 52 (1): 28-32.
Dactylorhiza ×serbica nsubsp. serbica (H. Fleischm.) Soó (Dactylorhiza
incarnata subsp. incarnata × Dactylorhiza maculata subsp. saccifera) is here
reported for the first time for Latium (central Italy). A small population has
been observed at Roccadorisio, near Fiamignano (Rieti province) at 1256 m
a.s.l. on 14 June 2015 in a marsh on calcareous soil. The discovery of
Dactylorhiza ×serbica nsubsp. serbica is chorologically interesting because it
is the first hybrid of Dactylorhiza genus in this region.

neue Hybride im Latium (Mittelitalien).- J. Eur. Orch. 52 (1): 28-32.

1. Introduction
On June 2015 during orchids investigation near Fiamignano (Rieti province),
one of the authors (M.R.) found a small population of Dactylorhiza ×serbica
nsubsp. serbica (H. Fleischm.) Soó, the natural hybrid between Dactylorhiza
incarnata (L.) Soó subsp. incarnata and Dactylorhiza maculata (L.) Soó
subsp. saccifera (Brongn.) Diklić. The discovery of this hybrid is reported here
for the first time, moreover it is the first hybrid of Dactylorhiza genus for
Latium.
2. Habitat and population data
About 40 plants fully blooming of Dactylorhiza ×serbica nsubsp. serbica (SOÓ
1962: 9) with the parental species, about 50 plants of Dactylorhiza incarnata
(L.) Soó subsp. incarnata and 50 plants of Dactylorhiza maculata (L.) Soó
subsp. saccifera (Brongn.) Diklić has been observed at Roccadorisio, near
Fiamignano (Rieti province, UTMWGS84 33T 350208E 4686906N) at 1256 m
a.s.l., on 14 June 2015, in a marsh near a Fagus sylvatica L. subsp. sylvatica
wood, on calcareous soil with plants of the genus Equisetum, Ranunculus,
Juncus etc. (fig. 3). Nomenclature follows BARTOLUCCI et al. (2018).
Morphology of floral traits of the hybrid has been studied on living material in
the field, no herbarium specimen was collected.

This hybrid exhibits morphological characters of the flower intermediate
between the parental species that grow in the same habitat together (fig. 5, 7).
Figure 4 shows a comparison of bract and labellum of the hybrid and the
parental species. Plant 52 cm high, quite robust, inflorescence cylindrical, dense
spike 12 cm long. Five cauline leaves, linear-lanceolate, acuminate, upper leave
bract-shaped, spotted on the upper surface, usually evenly distributed along
stem. Sepals pink-coloured, lanceolate, recurved, with rounded apex. Petals
ovate-lanceolate, pink-coloured that form a hood. Stem hollow, greenish,
reddish in the spike, Bracts lanceolate longer than the flowers, greenish-reddish,
25 mm long and 4 mm width. Labellum pink-coloured, slightly convex, three-
lobed more or less deeply, 9 mm long, 13 mm width (flat), central lobe with
rounded apex, lateral lobes with slightly wavy margin with dotted and line
occupying the labellum. Pollinia reddish (fig. 1, 2, 6).
3. Conclusion
The discovery of Dactylorhiza ×serbica nsubsp. serbica is interesting from a
chorological point of view and it is the first record for Latium (PEZZETTA &
PETRIGLIA 2016), moreover it is the first hybrid of Dactylorhiza genus for this
region.
