Abstract

Enhancements and Limitations to ICT-Based Informal Language Learning: Emerging Research and Opportunities is a pivotal reference source that provides vital research on the implementation of technological opportunities within informal language teaching methods along with the drawbacks that limit its efficiency. While highlighting topics such as acculturation, student perception, and autonomous applications, this publication explores how learners perform ICT-based activities beyond the classroom and assesses the linguistic gains generated by informal ICT uses. This book is ideally designed for teachers, IT consultants, educational software developers, researchers, policymakers, and academic professionals seeking current research on technological techniques within second language learning and teaching.

Facing globalization era, students tend to learn English informally. However, among the enormous studies on the use of informal learning, it was still inconclusive whether the time spent students dealt with their gadget really connected to English proficiency. This paper examines informal learning frequency in the area of English as a Foreign Language (EFL), particularly its contribution to students’ English proficiency. The study focuses on the discussions of time spent that students engage through English learning by the navigation of the digital application as part of informal learning. Correlation study was employed as the research design by collecting the data from 302 Indonesian university students through a survey. The findings showed positive yet low level of correlation, but reflect a description that students who preserve more time in the informal learning engagements made better improvement to English proficiency. The results of the study convinced that the frequent engagement with high agency of learning goal commitment is essential for achieving better English proficiency. Additionally, it adds an insight into how informal learning high frequency can make a unique contribution to EFL learners’ overall English outcomes and determine how teachers can provide necessary support to acknowledge the emerging progress of technology in education and modify their classroom practice through technology-enhanced language teaching with the intention of encouraging students’ autonomous learning with technology into language learning opportunities outside the classroom in order to enrich pedagogical insight of how informal digital learning can complement in-class and out-of-class learning.

This chapter provides a rationale for proficiency testing that subscribes to the view that accepting English as the global target language requires a proficiency testing framework beyond the monolithic EFL and ESL-based tests. It departs from irreversible facts including the outgrowing number of non-native speakers (NNSs) and World Englishes (WE). Such changes in the linguistic map of English in the worldwide context have weakened power-base viewpoints that drive the monolithic English proficiency tests, such as TOEFL and IELTS. These tests, albeit defenders, hardly represent the realities of English at present. They reflect an outdated taxonomy of English as a Foreign Language (EFL) and English as a Second Language (ESL) that undergo the sway of linguistic imperialism. They are mainly fashioned on the NS model and norms of Standard English (SE) and thus undermine the evolving WE. The chapter foregrounds an argument that the monopoly of the NS model is losing ground, and it is high time the new changes found their way to English proficiency testing. A testing shift from monocentrism to the pluricentric approach would reasonably reflect the reality of language uses and users worldwide.

This monograph aims to introduce the theme of informal learning. It consists of the theoretical part and the results of research conducted at the Faculty of Education, Palacký University in Olomouc among its master’s students – future English teachers and the students of other 3 universities. It attempts to find out how often and how the students use online platforms, applications, websites and social networks in their informal learning and formal education. Comparisons in the use of online technology are made with regards to the students’ gender and form of studies. Differences and similarities between the two groups of students are explored, as well as the potential influence of their specific histories with online technologies on how they plan to utilize these in their future careers. This book was written and financed as part of the student project IGA_Pdf_2021_021 The phenomenon of informal learning with a focus on online technologies for future English language teachers at Palacký University Olomouc. © Jana Černá, Blanka Babická, Jana Kořínková, Josef Nevařil, Barbora Bačíková, Miroslav Chráska, Michaela Bartošová, Lucie Hrňová, Kateřina Kačerovská, Tereza Krsková, Zuzana Otevřelová, 2022 © Palacký University in Olomouc, 2022

generational transmitting of cultural values and prepares individuals for social living. Entrepreneurial capacity enables a firm to capitalize on a wide scope of fresh and alternative viewpoints that may challenge embedded assumptions and path-dependent cognitive schemes used by a firm. The specific objectives are to ascertain the impacts of informal learning in promoting entrepreneurial capacity; to determine the extent to which experimental learning is promoting entrepreneurial capacity and investigate the factors militating against the promotion of entrepreneurial capacity through informal learning. The data collected was analyzed using descriptive survey while Chi-square Statistics was used to test the stated hypothesis. The study adopts a simple random sampling technique to select 100 entrepreneurs who are into the sales of clothing materials or fabrics (ready-made clothes- boutique) from the population (150). The study reveals that entrepreneurial capacity results in the creation of sources of capital or finance as part of the influence of informal learning. Goal orientation of boutique owners increases their entrepreneurial capacity. Motivation predicts the success of experimental learning in promoting entrepreneurial capacity. Also, it shows that individual(s) are likely to be at disadvantage in accessing informal learning opportunities, since everybody can’t benefit equally by identifying opportunities. It recommended that business owners should expand their scope of informal learning to accommodate formal learning to make them entrepreneurship professionals and facilitators.
