Kazakh Ethnic & National Stereotypical Values Experiment
Method: Field Experiment, Online Survey
Hypothesis: Specific stereotypical values tend to emerge when the specific group identity is suggested
to be salient.
Independent variable: Salient Group Identity
Dependent variables: Priorly determined stereotypically significant WVS questionnaire question
responses.
Six groups of Kazakhstan students will be asked some stereotypically significant questions from World
Values Survey questionnaire which is applied in Kazakhstan already. Independent variable is
subject's salient identity (Kazakhstan national identity versus ethnic Kazakh and Rus identities)
which will be manipulated by suggesting in the introduction text to the questions. There will be
no mention of any identity on control groups.
1. Six groups of ethnically later randomly divided (Kazaks [Ethnic KE + National KN + Control KC] and
Russian [RE + RN + RC]) students will be asked same set of questions filtered from World Values
Survey questionnaire.
2. At the start of the survey, Groups will be reminded in a natural sentence their suggested identity
( e.g. "As ethnically Russian Kazakh, can you answer the following questions." and "As a citizen of
Republic of Kazakhstan, can you answer the following questions.") except the two control groups.
3. The group averages will be tested against national and ethnic responses, with mean and
stereotypical response.
4. Expected result is the average responses comply with;
a. the mean of WVS database responses for Control groups
b. calculated Stereotypical National response for National Group
c. calculated Stereotypical Ethnic response with ethnic group.
d. And the average intergroup responses of the groups are
i. Significantly different from each other only for E groups
ii. Not significantly different for N and C groups
