The goal of the project is to combine a long-term history of semantics and social roles for strangers in many human societies with a description and analysis of present-day world society. In lookin g at contemporaneous situations we search as well for transformations of strangerhood (indifference, civil inattention, generalized minimal sympathy) as for contemporary fields of conflict with populations who are defined and perceived and sometimes newly discovered as strangers. The interest of the concept of the 'stranger' is that it allows to combine fundamental ideas about sociocultural evolution and specific structures of human societies with a precise description and analysis of present-day conflicts. ... On this basis it will then try to understand the system/environment relatio ns of science to the other function systems of contemporary world society (the polity, economy, religion, education, health system etc.). Resumo O artigo inicia com um quadro geral sobre quatro mecanismos centrais na formação da sociedade mundial: comunicação, migração, observação e conhecimento. Os três primeiros podem ser vistos como fatores dinâmicos que causam e movimentam variáveis na sociedade mundial, enquanto o conhecimento (mundial) é um tipo de estoque de resultados temporários dessas operações dinâmicas. [Show full abstract] segunda parte a dimensão semântica, os conceitos e as teorias e sua acumulação ao longo de dois mil anos, os quais preparam a ideia e a realização estrutural da sociedade mundial como sendo o sistema social mais extenso que inclui toda a socialidade em sua definição. Introduzimos na terceira parte o conceito de " Estruturas próprias da sociedade mundial " (Eigenstructures of World Society), estruturas auto-reforçadoras que igualmente preparam a sociedade mundial, pois são o resultado do surgimento deste sistema. Seis candidatas para estruturas-próprias (Eigenstructures) são apresentadas: diferenciação funcional, pequenas redes mundiais, organizações formais, comunidades epistêmicas, sistemas de interação global e eventos mundiais. Todas elas demonstram a unidade da formação estrutural e da autodescrição, característicos da sociedade mundial.
