Towards a systematic characterization of dialect variation in the Erzya-speaking world: Isoglosses and their reflexes attested in and around the Dubyonki Raion

Authors:

Abstract and Figures

This paper is directed at developing research methods for establishing affinities between individually documented language materials and descriptions of the Erzya dialects. To this end Erzya is assessed in its relation to its Mordvinic counterpart, Moksha. First, an outline is given illustrating: (a) lexical diversity as documented for Erzya versus Moksha dialect groups based on the Heikki Paasonen’s “Mordwinisches Wörterbuch” (1990, 1992, 1994, 1996) (henceforth MW); (b) verbal formant-function diversity, e.g. the indicative first preterite in the Mordvinic literary languages, and (c) nominal formant-function diversity, e.g. possessor indices in the core cases. An introduction is then given to the development of Erzya dialect research according to the most prominent researchers, M. E. Evsevʹev, D. B. Bubrih, N. F. Cyganov, D. V. Cygankin and G. I. Ermuškin, with an accompanying list of isoglosses (cf. MW 1990: XXXIV–XCIX). The isoglosses are utilized in the basic analysis of dialect characteristics attested in the Dubyonski Raion, Mordovia, August 2013. The Kabayevo language form receives special attention, and contrasts are sought in the language of Batushevo, some 30 kilometers away. The identification of isoglosses will contribute to the already existing systematic classification of the Erzya language.

... From a linguistic perspective, it would be interesting to see whether variation in Erzya prolative marking is simply a matter of spatial-temporal complementary distribution pertinent to Mordvin dialect studies [cf. Rueter 2016; The morphological categories of case, number, definiteness and person are shared with other nominals. In a word, when the NP head in contextually retrievable positions is elided, the subsequently promoted NP head automatically becomes the locus of NP category marking. ...
... If we examine the finite verbal paradigms of the two literary Mordvin languages more extensively, we will note that 48% of 196 combinatory functions in the finite verbal paradigms involve either unambiguity or shared ambiguity (see [Rueter 2016]; in press: Linguistic distance between Erzya and Moksha, dependent morphology). An instance of unambiguous would, for example, involve a 1Sg subject and a 2Sg object. ...

This paper presents the current lexical, morphological, syntactic and rule-based machine translation work for Erzya and Moksha that can and should be used in the development of a roadmap for Mordvin linguistic research. We seek to illustrate and outline initial problem types to be encountered in the construction of an Apertium-based shallow-transfer machine translation system for the Mordvin language forms. We indicate reference points within Mordvin Studies and other parts of Uralic studies, as a point of departure for outlining a linguistic studies with a means for measuring its own progress and developing a roadmap for further studies.
... ( Contrastively, the Mordvin languages, Erzya and Moksha, exhibit a variation that has yet to be researched in depth, i.e. counted nouns do not obligatorily take special marking when qualified by cardinal numerals two and upward, see Markov (1961, 42) and Rueter (2013, 107), but perhaps also in dialect studies (Ryabov, 2016;Rueter, 2016;Levina, 2021;Agafonova and Ryabov, 2021). A similar phenomenon can be observed in Moksha (Rueter, forthcoming 2022). ...

This study discusses the way different numerals and related expressions are currently annotated in the Universal Dependencies project, with specific focus on the Uralic language family. We analyse different annotation conventions between individual treebanks, and aim to highlight some areas where further development work and systematization could prove beneficial. At the same time the Universal Dependencies project already offers a wide range of conventions to mark nuanced variation in numerals and counting expressions, and the harmonization of conventions between different languages could be the next step to take. The discussion here refers to the UD version 2.8., and some differences found may already be harmonized in the version 2.9.

A paper by Kiparsky and Pajusalu (2003;henceforward K&P) is frequently referred to in studies on vowel harmony (henceforward VH -see Baković 2003;Benus & Gafos 2007;Blumenfeld & Toivonen 2016;Finley 2008Finley , 2009Finley , 2010Hansson 2010;Hayes & Cziráky 2006;Kabak 2011;Kabak et al. 2008;Leduc et al. forthcoming;Nevins 2010;Polgárdi 2015;Rebrus & Törkenczy 2015a, 2015b, 2016Tolskaya 2014;Törkenczy & Rebrus & Szigetvári 2012, 2013. The main purpose of this paper is to draw attention to the inaccuracies in the article by Paul Kiparsky and Karl Pajusalu (2003). Their influential study suggests a typological classification of vowel harmony based on mostly Finnic languages and their dialects which is claimed to be supported by a particular OT analysis. However, in many cases, their example languages and dialects are hardly classifiable into the category suggested by them. Moreover, their OT analysis completely ignores cases of variation (including vacillation) in the example languages. The present study deals with the data available for Estonian (Mulgi and Northeastern dialects), Veps and Khanty, and demonstrates – mostly based on the same sources referred to by Kiparsky and Pajusalu – that the actual patterns of harmony are considerably different from the patterns described in their article. It is emphasized that many patterns do not arise from the behavior of neutral vowels but instead, they can be results of the length and the nature of the harmonic domain. The paper also introduces the notion of harmonicity slope, according to which the domain has no strict borders and in which the tendency for the vowels to harmonize gradually diminishes.
... Although trilingual dictionaries of Erzya, Moksha and Russian (or other target languages) are a good start for arriving at Erzya-to-Moksha dictionaries, there are certain issues to be dealt with first. The Paasonen Mordvin Dialect Dictionary, which contains nearly 7000 Mordvin roots but aligns less than 50% of the roots as mutual to Moksha and Erzya (Rueter 2016(Rueter , 2020, is, in fact, an exceptional work of cognate alignment for continued studies in all Mordvin idioms. This cognate alignment can, to some extent, also be observed in the trilingual dictionaries of 2004 (Moksha-Erzya-Russian with at least 3,610 translation pairs) and 2011 (Russian-Moksha-Erzya with parallel Moksha and Erzya translations for at least 10,123 Russian words). ...

We present a new approach to inducing a bilingual dictionary between the endangered Erzya and Moksha languages automatically based on existing dictionaries in other languages. This work is, for the most part, complementary to the Mordvin research done by PhD László Keresztes, who has demonstrated the alignment of the two language forms in morphology, lexicon and syntax (1990), and then gone on to contemplate syncretisms of the individual languages (1999). In this paper, we present an automatic data-driven method for deriving new lexicographic links between Erzya and Moksha vocabularies. We strive to describe steps in Mordvin studies involving semantic alignment of the Erzya and Moksha lexicon. We briefly remind ourselves of previous dictionary and vocabulary work with the Mordvin languages, dating back to the 17th century. The semantic alignment of this lexicon is important in measuring linguistic distance between the closely related but distinct literary languages of Erzya and Moksha. This alignment fits into a larger scheme including etymological, morphological and syntactic alignment of the two languages.
... Mutual phenomena in Erzya and Moksha, however, can be distinguished as exact matches and fuzzy matches, as it were. While there is no doubt that the two languages share nearly the same categories of case, person, number and definiteness, it must also be noted that the paradigms do not share the same cellular structure (Keresztes 1999;Trosterud 2006;Rueter 2016). When the paradigm structure is diverse, it is suggested that a union of morphological tags be taken as a starting point. ...

This document describes shared development of finite-state description of two closely related but endangered minority languages, Erzya and Moksha. It touches upon morpholexical unity and diversity of the two languages and how this provides a motivation for shared open-source FST development. We describe how we have designed the transducers so that they can benefit from existing open-source infrastructures and are as reusable as possible.
Article
This article deals with the partitive function of the Erzya verbs of ingestion. These are the verbs 'eat', 'drink' and 'smoke', 'breath', etc., which are often referred to in studies of Erzya and Moksha as taking ablative-case direct objects with an ablative function. There is no individual case in Erzya or Moksha that strictly takes the object function (see Kolâdënkov, 1940: 153; SALO, MERJA 2015: Passive and reflexive categories in languages of the Volga Region, An areal typology study; SERŽANT, ILJA 2021: Typology of partitives. Linguistics 59/4: 881–947; JACK RUETER 19; 1954: 47), rather there are four cases used for expressing this function: nominative, genitive as well as the ablative and inessive. We find that the verbs of ingestion with their partitive-function arguments have not been studied in causative structures. For this reason, we draw the reader's attention to the use of the ablative with the partitive function in the list of other direct object- cases given above. We demonstrate that the ablative with a partitive function co-occurs with nominative and genitive direct objects, but that it does not co-occur with the inessive. We further note that the partitive-function ablative does occur in in passivizations but does not undergo change in case. Finally, we note that the ablative/partitive function is not an obligatory argument when measured according to causativization strategies. We find that although there is evidence of nominative-genitive variation in the causative structure that can be associated with the inessive in the function of the causee, no such variation is present for the ablative case, which remains only as a non-promotable.

This is a Festschrift for Dr. Jack Rueter, compiled on the occasion of his 60th birthday. The book consists of peer-reviewed scientific work by Dr. Rueter’s colleagues. Its contents, compiled by well-established scholars and researchers in NLP, linguistics, philology and digital humanities, pertain to latest advances in natural language processing, to newly developed digital resources, and to endangered languages. Contributions touch upon a wide array of languages such as historical English, Chukchi, Mansi, Erzya, Komi, Finnish, Apurinã, Sign Languages, Sami languages, and Japanese. Most papers present work on endangered languages or on domains with a limited number of resources available for NLP. This book is a tribute to Dr. Rueter’s long career as a true pioneer in the field of digital documentation of endangered languages. His work has always been and remains to be characterized by altruistic thinking and dedication to a greater good in building free and open-source tools and resources for languages which have previously not been afforded such much-needed attention.

The purpose of this article is to outline morphological facts about the two literary languages Erzya and Moksha, which can be used for estimating the distinctive character of these individual language forms. Whereas earlier morphological evaluations of the linguistic distance between Erzya and Moksha have placed them in the area of 90% cohesion, this one does not. This study evaluates the languages on the basis of non-ambiguity, parallel sets of ambiguity and divergent ambiguity. Non-ambiguity is found in combinatory function to morphological formant alignment, e.g. молян go+V+Ind+Prs+ScSg1. Parallel sets of ambiguity is found in combinatory-function set to morphological formant alignment where both languages share the same sets of ambiguous readings, e.g. саизь v s сявозь take+V+Ind+ScPl3+OcSg3, ScPl3+OcPl3. Divergent ambiguity is found in forms with non-symmetric alignments of combinatory functions, e.g. саинек take+V+Ind+Prt1+ScPl1, +Prt1+ScPl1+OcSg3, +Prt1+ScPl1+OcPl3 vs сявоме take+V+Ind+Prt1+ScPl1, сявоськ take+V+Ind+Prt1+ScPl1+OcSg3, +Prt1+ScPl1+OcPl3. This morphological evaluation will establish the preparatory work in syntactic disambiguation necessary for facilitating Erzya↔Moksha machine translation, whereas machine translation will enhance the usage of mutual language resources. Results show that the Erzya and Moksha languages, in the absence of loan words from the 20 th century, share less than 50% of their vocabularies, 63% of their regular nominal declensions and 48% of their regular finite conjugations.
