The details of the prebasic molt of 110 actively molting northern orioles (Icterus galbula) were studied from 1976 to 1978 on the Delta Beach Ridge, Manitoba. This molt occurs on the breeding ground after the young have become independent but before the fall migration. The prebasic molt of adult males results in a plumage only slightly duller than that of the breeding season. Adult males begin molting a few days after the females, but 2nd-year males start at the same time as the females.
