Abstract

Los briófitos acuáticos son un componente conspicuo de la vegetación de ríos de alta montaña tropical. Sin embargo, solo seis estudios abordan la taxonomía y ecología de estas plantas en Colombia. Este trabajo tiene como objetivo conocer la riqueza de especies de briófitos que se establecen en el río Teatinos y aportar información sobre la forma de crecimiento, tipo de sustrato colonizado, abundancia, características del hábitat y altitud para cada una de las especies. Se ubicaron 12 puntos de muestreo cada 100 m altitudinales, donde se colectaron las especies de briófitos que crecen sobre suelo y roca. Se presenta el catálogo comentado de briófitos acuáticos del río Teatinos donde se registran 70 especies, organizadas alfabéticamente por familias, géneros y especies en cada grupo (musgos, hepáticas y antoceros).

The checklist of bryophytes reported in the literature for the department of Boyacá (Colombia) is presented. For the territory, 849 species of bryophytes are accepted (6 hornworts, 330 liverworts, 513 mosses) distributed in 295 genera and 102 families. For each name, the source or origin of the report is cited. The information included in this catalog was based on the catalogs or lists of bryophyte species in which specimens located in the department of Boyacá are referenced. Also included is a list of 198 names that correspond to synonyms and 15 questionable records. Campylopus, Frullania, Plagiochila, Fissidens and Metzgeria were the genera with the highest number of species. Lejeuneaceae, Pottiaceae, Brachytheciaceae and Hypnaceae were the families with the highest number of genera, while Lejeuneaceae, Leucobryaceae, Bartramiaceae, Pottiaceae and Lepidoziaceae were the families with the highest number of species. Se presenta la revisión taxonómica de la familia Polytrichaceae para Colombia. Diez y siete especies son reconocidas para el país. Se registra a Steereobryon elamellosum por primera vez para el país; se modifica la representación de especies en los casos de Atrichum, Polytrichum, Pogonatum, Polytrichadelphus y Steereobryon; se confirma la representación de Notoligotrichum y Oligotrichum. Se proponen quince nuevos sinónimos. La revisión incluye una clave general para los géneros de la familia, sinonimia, descripciones, ilustraciones y mapas de distribución. <br /

This work provides descriptions, illustrations and keys to the 595 genera and 120 families of bryophytes (hornworts, liverworts, mosses) recorded from tropical America. The generic descriptions include data on the diversity, distribution, and ecology of the group within the Neotropics, important morphological characters, salient features of use in plant identification, as well as literature for species identification. The introductory section of the book provides a discussion of the main morphological features of the hornworts, liverworts, and mosses an overview of the different regions and habitats within the Neotropics and their characteristic bryophytes, information on how to collect and process bryophytes, a list of important herbaria in tropical America, a glossary of technical terms, and a bibliography.

Resumen Plagiochila is the largest genus of bryophytes of Colombia. A total of 175 species have been recorded from the country but the majority of these are synonyms. In this paper 57 species are accepted for Colombia. A key to the Colombian species of Plagiochila is provided and each species is briefly described, with data on types, synonyms, published illustrations, morphology, geographical distribution and habitat, as well as a brief discussion of differentiating characters and taxonomic affinity. Among the countries of tropical America, Colombia has the highest diversity of Plagiochila followed by Ecuador (53 species) and Costa Rica (50 species). More than half of the Colombian species are widely distributed throughout tropical America and seven of them occur also in Africa and/or western Europe. About one fourth of the species are restricted to the northern Andes, which is the centre of diversity of Plagiochila in the New World. The majority of the species grow as epiphytes in humid Andean forests. Diversity peaks in the upper montane forest belt between 2000-3000 m. Sixteen species occur in the páramo belt and five are exclusive to páramo. Eighteen species occur in lowland rainforest. Plagiochila eggersii, recorded from lowland rainforest of the Chocó, is new to Colombia.

Based on the geographical pattern of natural regions of Colombia, namely Pacific coast - biogeographical Chocó-region, Caribbean coast, llanos (Orinoco), Amazon and Andean, results of inventories of biodiversity are presented. Flora includes flowering plants, ferns, mosses and lichens. Fauna include reptiles, birds, amphibians and mammals. Plant vegetation includes the terrestrial and aquatic plant communities. The climatic analysis was made from an ecological perspective with detailed analysis of precipitation; ecosystems were defined based on characterizations of biotic components (species, communities) and the complementary aspects related to geology, climate and soils. At the level of the world, Colombia is one of two countries with the highest expression of this renewable natural capital (biodiversity). In flora, it means around 26,500 species of flowering plants. There are 1,600 species of ferns, 976 mosses and 1,700 lichens, these values placed the country as the richest in each of these groups of neotropical countries. The diversity and richness of forests and other vegetation types as shrublands, grasslands, rosette-plants, Colombia reaches about 1,200 different types, which give unique feature as one of the countries with the greatest variety worldwide. The Andean region has the largest concentration of biodiversity; about 11,500 species of flowering plants, 914 mosses, 756 liverworts, lichens 1,396 and 1,050 of ferns, serve as testimony to the enormous concentration of plant richness; in faunal groups, the values of 974 bird species, 484 amphibians, 274 reptiles and 349 mammals, also show this natural region in the first place. The Chocó region of Colombia is richer than the areas of the same biogeographical region in Central America and Ecuador. The Colombian paramo region represented 85% of the richness of flowering plants the entire biogeographical region and about 41% of the species are restricted in distribution to Colombia. In terms of fauna richness Colombia is the richest country in birds (1,834 species) and amphibians (700 species) and reached very important values in other groups like reptiles (512 species) and mammals (492 species).

A taxonomic revision of 16 of the 21 genera of the large pleurocarpous moss family Hypnaceae is presented for Latin America (Mexico, Caribbean, Central America, and South America). This study includes the genera Ctenidium (Schimp.) Mitt., Elmeriobryum Broth., Herzogiella Broth., Homomallium (Schimp.) Loeske, Irelandia W. R. Buck, Isopterygiopsis Z. Iwats., Isopterygium Mitt., Phyllodon Bruch & Schimp. in Bruch, Schimp. & W. Gumbel, Platygyriella Cardot, Platygyrium Schimp. in Bruch, Schimp. & W. Gumbel, Pseudotaxiphyllum Z. Iwats., Puiggariopsis M. Menzel, Pylaisia Bruch & Schimp. in Bruch, Schimp. & W. Gumbel, Rhacopilopsis Renauld & Cardot, Syringothecium Mitt., and Taxiphyllum M. Fleisch. A total of 35 species are recognized for the entire 16 genera. All taxa were studied taxonomically with each genus and its associated species described in detail. Included in this revision are a description of the family, keys to the genera and species in the Hypnaceae, detailed descriptions of each species with complete information on the known distribution throughout Latin America, habitat information, and nomenclature, and discussions on distinguishing features. Illustrations and distribution maps are provided for many of the species. The following six names are lectotypified: Hypnum micans Sw., Isopterygium cylindricarpum Cardot, Isopterygium lanissimum Mitt., Plagiothecium bolivianum Broth., Plagiothecium restingae var.tenue Mull Hal., and Stereodon distichaceus Mitt.

Aquatic bryophytes are a common but often overlooked component of a wide variety of stream ecosystems. Although stream environments present a number of challenges for bryophyte reproduction and survival, some bryophytes have characteristics that allow them to persist in a wide variety of stream types (e.g., adaptations to low light and temperature, rapid nutrient uptake, resistance to scouring and spates). Primary production by aquatic bryophytes can equal or exceed that by epilithic and periphytic algae, which have been much more widely studied. Also, it is clear that bryophytes can profoundly influence both the abundance and community structure of stream invertebrates. However, a number of fundamentally important roles of bryophytes in stream ecosystems remain unexamined. Very little is known, for example, about the dynamics of nutrient uptake by bryophytes. The dynamics of nutrient regeneration from decomposing bryophyte tissues are essentially unknown. Nor is it known whether bryophytes increase or decrease the habitat quality for stream trophic levels other than stream invertebrates. For example, ecological interactions between bryophytes and epiphytic microorganisms are potentially important but unknown. Similarly, it is not clear whether fish benefit from the increased abundance of insects often observed when bryophytes are present in streams. The purpose of this review is to summarize the existing literature on the functions of bryophytes as important ecosystem components, rather than as simple environmental indicators. We hope that this information will foster a greater appreciation for the potential functions of these organisms, and will stimulate additional research that will improve our knowledge of whole-stream ecosystem dynamics.
