... The concept of supply chain sustainability has developed alongside that of CSR and has received considerable attention in the industrial world. In fact, an increasing number of companies are implementing annual social reports, sustainability strategies and codes of conduct derived from national legislative impositions, international conventions, standards, or principles such as Social Accountability 8000, ISO 14001 and Global Reporting Initiative (Mota et al. 2015;Martins and Pato 2019;Murmura and Bravi 2020). "In a supply chain context, a responsible company is one that is able to systematically create better relationships with the overall environment in which it operates. ...

Today, corporate social responsibility (CSR) has become a central topic in corporate management, such that it has favored the transition from the idea of organizational culture to that of a responsible corporate culture. The aim of this study is to analyze the social responsibility practices of several major retailers to verify similarities and differences in their approaches to defining socially responsible strategies and examine how this strategy has changed over time. The analysis is based on a longitudinal study that compares the CSR-related practices of 12 large retailers from five countries. Combining multiple case studies with a longitudinal analysis offers the opportunity to identify patterns indicative of dynamic processes, providing a close-up view of those patterns as they evolve over time. The companies analyzed are assumed to represent the most advanced CSR experiences in the retail industry and in their country of origin. The results show that these organizations go far beyond the limits imposed by law based on their CSR strategies. They evolved towards committing to social and environmental issues, thereby overcoming formal and showcase interventions, which were more frequent in the past.

Advertising aims to attract attention, evoke emotions, and convey information. However, consumers have a limited ability to remember and for selective retention. This phenomenon has been exacerbated with the advent of the internet. Consequently, the implementation of shocking images by companies has been considered a valid means to attract consumers’ attention. Although the literature has explored consumers’ reactions to shockvertising, few studies have focused on moral emotions. Hence, the research objective of this work is to understand which moral emotions are evoked by shockvertising and what the object of such emotions is. Because of the increased environmental impact of businesses and human activities, this study explores consumers’ reactions and moral emotions evoked by the use of shocking images to communicate issues related to plastic waste. Our findings show that shocking images arouse, for the most part, negative emotions and, in particular, contempt and anger. The use of shocking images can thus attract users’ attention, generate a discussion on the plastic issue, and enhance consumer awareness.

The European Charter for Sustainable Tourism (ECST) in Protected Areas is a voluntary management tool and certification that enables protected areas to develop sustainable tourism for the benefit of the environment, local populations, businesses, and visitors. The EUROPARC Federation, of which Federparchi has been the Italian section since 2008, issues the internationally recognized Charter. The entire process is participative and integrated through a strategic approach that includes defining the strategic objectives to be pursued through an Action Plan, allocating the necessary resources, and monitoring the results achieved. This contribution aims to propose a critical analysis of the documentation produced by the managers of the Torre del Cerrano Marine Protected Areas (in Italy) following the process implemented during the months when the Charter was renewed (between autumn 2018 and spring 2019) and contained in the Strategy and Action Plan document. The author conducted a critical analysis to define the factors characterizing a protected area as the result of the participatory process.

Pantaleoni and Pareto re-established economic theory on the basis of homo oeconomicus which, despite criticisms, went on to become a strangely popular concept, not only among economists, but even in common parlance, where it has assumed a confusing variety of meanings. With a view to setting things in order, this book distinguishes: the methodological hypotheses, which could possibly be corrected on the basis of new economic psychology; the weak anthropologies, retrievable as 'given abstractions' within typical contexts; and finally the extreme versions, that reduce human nature to absolute egoism. The author makes a radical criticism of the latter, drawing upon the extensive tools derived from psychology, philosophical anthropology and political philosophy, and thus succeeds in demonstrating their lack of empirical foundation, their conceptual inconsistency and their ideological dangerousness.

Corporate social responsibility (CSR) has been traditionally interpreted as the sum of practices, policies, and strategies linked with social and environmental benefits that corporations implement to serve multiple stakeholders’ interests simultaneously. The evolution of meanings and implications of traditional and contemporary interpretations of CSR, focuses on integrated CSR as a breakthrough approach to business, society, and environment. Several theories and trends that integrated CSR is rooted in are: stakeholder theory, ethics, value creation, and the increasing global call for sustainable growth and development, under both financial and ethical perspectives. Selected case studies will serve as empirical evidence of processes, practices, and strategic tools that can allow the integration of CSR into the company core business and will open avenues for further discussions and practical innovative developments in CSR strategy to both academics and practitioners.

Industry has long been one of the most important drivers of Chinese economic growth. In order to improve the environmental footprint of industrial areas, Chinese authorities have established mechanisms of environmental control in the internal management processes of companies. In this regard, the international standard ISO 14001 for environmental management systems is the management tool that has had widest adoption among Chinese companies since its creation in 1996. The main purposes of the paper are to investigate the available international and national statistics on the adoptionof ISO 14001 in China, and present opinions on ISO 14001 of the 72 representatives of small and medium enterprises and multinational companies of Guangdong province that participated to the workshop "New tools and standards to advance and measure corporate sustainability", held in Guangzhou on 26 January 2018. The analysis of strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats (SWOT) was adopted as the research method to collect opinions on the ISO 14001 standard. Participants were asked to discuss strengths, weaknesses, threats and opportunities considering four business aspects: sustainability, internal processes, stakeholder engagement, and resource management. Our findings indicate that companies fully embraced ISO 14001 and recognized the necessity of a standardized approach to identify environmental aspects. On the other hand, they also expressed concern about aspects such as the certification cost, the focus on certification itself and not on the improvement of environmental performance, and the lack of integration with sustainability tools such as life cycle assessment (LCA) and other sustainability paradigms such as circular economy and corporate social responsibility (CSR).

Quality Management Systems (QMS) include the organisational structure, activities, programmes and actions designed to ensure that a product, process or service conforms to the objectives and the purposes for which it is to be used. Therefore, it is clear that quality systems involve all stages, starting from the initial identification of the needs and expectations of customers to their satisfaction. The aim of this research is to explore the knowledge and perceptions of customers about companies’ QMS related to business process management, environment, health and safety at work, social responsibilities/ethics. These themes are connected to International and European standards such as ISO 9001, ISO 14001, OHSAS 18001, SA 8000, which certify the presence in the company of attention given to these issues. The survey wants to investigate if Italian customers pay attention to these aspects, if they know these standards and if their presence increases customer satisfaction about the quality of the organisation and the product or service that it produces or supplies. The research was carried out through a questionnaire proposed to a heterogeneous sample of Italian consumers; data have been collected from 15 September to 15 December 2015, and they have been analysed using SPSS 23.0.

Some of the academic research on ISO 14001 has focused on analyzing the benefits of its adoption. However, this international standard has also received some criticism, particularly in respect of the adoption of ISO 14001 when not accompanied by significant improvements in environmental performance. This study analyzes the relationship between the symbolic environmental behavior and the adoption of ISO 14001. In so doing, it uses binary logistic regression to analyze an international sample of 1961 manufacturing facilities that each employs more than 50 people. The results indicate that the higher the symbolic environmental performance of the firm, the greater the probability of adopting ISO 14001.

The purpose of this chapter is to outline the development of the idea of "stakeholder management" as it has come to be applied in strategic management. We begin by developing a brief history of the concept. We then suggest that traditionally the stakeholder approach to strategic management has several related characteristics that serve as distinguishing features. We review recent work on stakeholder theory and suggest how stakeholder management has affected the practice of management. We end by suggesting further research questions.

In today's global markets, issues related to environmental sustainability, ethics and the working environment have greater importance on business performance. The SA 8000 standard can be used as a tool to assess organizations' performance on the social dimension of sustainability and understanding its relevance, could become a key element for the implementation of a sustainable strategy. Therefore, the aim of this research is to investigate the implementation experience of the Social Accountability 8000 standard, through an empirical research on the motivations, the perceived benefits and the barriers to implementation by companies in the Italian context. A survey was conducted, which involved 1081 Italian certified companies through the submission of a questionnaire. A Principal Component Analysis was applied to factors influencing motivations, benefits and barriers to SA 8000; to verify the reliability of the factor analysis, the Cronbach's alpha test was computed. Finally, a logistic regression model has been used to assess whether the motivations and the perceived benefits contribute to determine an overall positive judgment about SA 8000 implementation by firms. The research shows how companies' SA 8000 certified are strongly oriented to the environment that surrounds them, and pay much attention to all relationships in the supply chain. The respondent companies seem to approach the standard not only for external reasons linked to the image and promotion of themselves, but also for a real desire to improve their internal working environment. In conclusion, it can be drawn from the research that the ethical SA 8000 standard may be used as a tool to internalize the corporate sustainability, and develop a successful sustainable strategy if effectively developed.
