Due to the fights around the Radio on 24–26 October 1956, two extensive conflagrations destroyed most of the departments of the Natural History Museum housed in the central building of the Hungarian National Museum (the Department of Mineralogy and Petrology and the Department of Geology and Palaeontology) as well as the Africa Exhibition. This paper describes the layout of the departments and exhibitions housed in the building before the fire, gives achronological account of the fights around the building and the fires as well as the work of the fire brigades. Then data on the actions of the insurgents and the military troops within the museum, a detailed account of the fire, its causes and certain conditions are given. Contemporary reports about the fire and its exploit by the political propaganda are also reviewed. An account on the quantifiable damages, and a reconstructed list of the destroyed inventories of the Department of Mineralogy and Petrology is also given.
