Abstract and Figures

Two nolid species; Meganola ohsunghwani László, Ronkay & Ronkay, 2014 and M. basisignata Inoue, 1991 are newly recorded from Korea. Illustrations of adult and genitalia are provided. Final instar of each species are given.

Abstract
Two nolid species; Meganola ohsunghwani László, Ronkay & Ronkay, 2014 and M.
basisignata Inoue, 1991 are newly recorded from Korea. Illustrations of adult and genitalia are
provided. Final instar of each species are given.

Introduction
The genus Meganola (Lepidoptera, Nolidae, Nolinae) was established by Dyar, 1898 with
Meganola conspicua as the type species. It can be identified by the hindwing venation M

(László et al 2015). The larvae of subfamily
Nolinae are characterized by absence of a pair of abdominal proleg, the secondly setae on
verrucae present (Holloway 2003). In the Eurasia continents, over 150 species of Meganola
have been recorded to date (László et al 2014). Only 12 species of Meganola were reviewed
from Korea (Cha et al 2019). Among the adjacent countries as follows: 10 species from Russia
Far East (Beljaev 2016), 38 species from China (Cha et al 2019), and 53 species from Japan
(Kishida 2011).
In this study, we newly added two species from Korea, Meganola ohsunghwani László,
Ronkay & Ronkay, 2014 and M. basisignata Inoue, 1991, with illustrations of adult, and
genitalia to the Korean moth species list.
Material and methods
The moths were collected by light trap, using a mercury vapor lamp (220V/200W,
Dongseong Co., Korea) and four UV lamps (20W, FL29SbL/18, Kumho Co., Korea), and with
two white screens (2.0m X 1.5m) behind the lamp. Light trap was set after sunset managed for
4–5 hours. The collected moths were killed in poison bottles with ammonia water (30%) or
ethyl acetate (100%) and kept in a low temperature condition. After that, the wings were spread
and dry thoroughly, then kept in specimen boxes.
Genitalia were dissected and examined under stereomicroscope (Leica EZ4, Leica
Microsystems, CMS GmbH, Wetzlar, Germany. They were mounted on the slide after being
treated by a modified method of Robinson’s (1976) and Bae (pers.com.). Images of adults and
genitalia were taken by using a Cannon EOS 60D digital camera attached to a Cannon EF 100
mm F2.8 Macro USM lens (Cannon, Inc., Tokyo, Japan) and a Leica DM 2500 microscope
attached with Leica ICC50 E (Leica, Wetzlar, Germany).
The examined materials studied herein were based on the following collections: INU–
(Incheon National University, Korea, Department of Life Sciences), HEO–(Un–Hong Heo’s
private collection of breeding sample), IKPIC–(Institute of Korean Peninsula Insects
Conservation), HNU–(Hannam University), KNA–(Korea National Arboretum), GW–
(Gangwon–Do), JN–(Jeollanam–Do).
Abbreviations used are as follows: TL–(type locality), TS–(type species).

Redescription. (Figures 1A, B). Length of forewing 8 mm (wingspan 17 mm) in male, 11 mm
(wingspan 23 mm) in female. Male antenna bipectinate, female filiform. Ground color of
forewing pale gray; black antemedial line waved; black medial line rather dentate; black
postmedial line slightly waved; a black dot on subterminal vein; cilia pale gray. Hindwing
ground color pale gray and graduatly darkened to margin; a gray dot on discal cell; cilia pale
gray.
Male genitalia (Figure 2A). Pseudouncus tapering, tumescent at median. Harpe short, finger–
shaped, with 2–4 dentate dorsally. Saccus long as tegumen and narrow V–shaped. Aedeagus
slender, with a scythe–shaped cornutus.
Female genitalia (Figure 3). Ostium bursae rather sclerotized, angled near ductus bursae.
Ductus bursae membranous but very weakly sclerotized. Corpus bursae with two triangular
signa, posterior signum two–thirds of anterior; appendix bursae absent.
Material examined. 2, 2♀; [KNA] 1, Tabdong, 21 viii 1991 (G.J. Weon), sample No.
KNAE 020205127, LE 5900002–001, Gen. Slide No. INU–9014; [HEO] 1, GW, Naeseorak,
15 v 2015 (U.H. Heo), host plant: Sorbus alnifolia, emerged 12 vi 2012, Gen. Slide No. HNU–

♂4092; [IKPIC] 1, 1, GW, Nodong–ri, Pyeongchang, 16 viii 2015 (M.K. Paek).
Distribution. Korea (GW), North Korea (Prov. Pyunganbuk–do, Ryang–gang), China (Prov.
Shaanxi).
Final instar. Body ground color black. Basically all setae are white, but A1 to A3 are black and
ocher (see Figure 4).
Host plant. Sorbus alnifolia (Rosaceae) (Heo 2016).
Remarks. This species is as same as the unidentification species in Heo (2016). So we
formally report in this study. The immature stage is unknown up to date. The photograph of
final instar of this species with hostplant is provided.
Meganola basisignata Inoue, 1991

Redescription. (Figure 1C). Length of forewing 8 mm (wingspan 17 mm) in male. Male
antenna rather bipectinate, rami of basal to medial at least three times longer than apical area’s.
Ground color of forewing pale gray; faint antemedial line present; light–brown small antemedial
patch present; medial brown patch ovate; black postmedial line waved; ground color of terminal
part darker than forewing ground color. Hindwing ground color pale gray graduatly darkened to
margin, with gray discal dot; cilia gray.
Male genitalia (Figure 2B). Pseudouncus tapering. Valva apex rounded. Harpe bowl–shaped,
with basally elongated; saccus V–shaped; aedeagus weakly sclerotized; apical area bulged
right–angled, without cornutus.
Female genitalia. Not examined in this study.
Material examined. [HEO] 1, JN, Bool–jae, Suncheon–si, 13 ix 2017 (U.H. Heo), host plant:
Corylopsis coreana Uyeki, emerged 28 iv 2018, Gen. Slide No. INU–9153.
Distribution. Korea (JN), Japan (Prov. Niigata, Akita, Miyagi) (Kishida, 2011).
Final instar. Ground color pale, abdominal verrucae are ocher. Basically all setae are white,
but thoratics are black and white (see Figure 5).
Host plant. Corylopsis coreana new record (Hamamelidaceae).
Remarks. This species was only described from Japan by Inoue (1991), but we report this

species from Korea for the first time. The immature stage is unknown up to date. The
photograph of final instar of this species with hostplant is provided.

Present paper contains the descriptions of four new genera distinguished from the collecting genus Meganola s.l. (Hamp-sonola, Wittonola, Fragilonola and Maculonola gen. n.) and 11 new species (Meganola pseudobasalactifera, Hampsono-la diehli, H. subbasirufa, H. angustifasciata, H. stueningi, H. micra, Wittonola latifasciata, Nanola rothschildi, Fragilonola fragilis, F. parentela and Maculonola dolokmerangirensis spp. n.) from South East Asia. Based on genital morphology the concept of the genus Nanola is extended, involving several species treated earlier as Meganola. Meganola yakovlevi László, Ronkay & Ronkay, 2010 is synonymised with M. tetrodon (de Joannis, 1928), and M. pekarskyi László, Ronkay & Ronkay, 2014 is synonymised with Nanola liaoningensis (Han & Li, 2008), syn. n. 45 new combinations and 2 new stati are established. With 48 colour photos and 42 genitalia figures.
