NOTA CIENTÍFICA
First record of Leptoglossus occidentalis Heidemann,
1910 in Guatemala (Hemiptera, Heteroptera, Coreidae)
Primera cita de Leptoglossus occidentalis Heidemann, 1910 en
Guatemala (Hemiptera, Heteroptera, Coreidae)
Currently, the Nearctic coreid Leptoglossus occidentalis Heidemann,
1910, a highly dispersible invasive species, is extending its distribution in
Latin America. Lately, the species was reported from Chile (FAÚNDEZ
& ROCCA, 2017; FAÚNDEZ et al., 2017, 2018, 2019, 2020), Argentina
(CARPINTERO et al., 2019; KUN & MASCIOCCHI, 2019), Costa Rica
(VAN DER HEYDEN, 2019) and Uruguay (FAÚNDEZ & SILVERA, 2019).
The gap between the populations of L. occidentalis in the southern part of
North America and in South America (VAN DER HEYDEN, 2019) seems
to be closed step by step:
Recently, an adult specimen of L. occidentalis was photographed in
the city of Antigua Guatemala, located in the department of Sacatepéquez
in the central highlands of Guatemala. Several photographs of the spe-
cimen were published in the online database iNaturalist by a user with
the pseudonym danielbush21 as taken on 14-XII-2019 (DANIELBUSH21,
2019). L. occidentalis, undoubtly identifiable through pictures, is a good
example of how citizen science gives a hand to entomology (GOULA et
al., 2013).
As L. occidentalis has not been reported for Guatemala in scientific
publications yet, the record reported in this note is the first one for this
country. Furthermore, it is the second record from Central America.
In 2019, a list of eleven species of the genus Leptoglossus Guérin-
Méneville, 1831 known from Guatemala was published (BRAILOVSKY &
VAN DER HEYDEN, 2019). Thus, L. occidentalis is the twelfth species of
the genus reported for this country.
As L. occidentalis is present in Mexico, Costa Rica (VAN DER HEYDEN,
2019) and Guatemala, findings of the species in other Central American
countries can be expected in the near future.
