Abstract and Figures

Forty-five species of arachnids have been collected from 14 localities in Albania. These belong to four orders: Araneae (38 species of 19 families), Opiliones (2 species of 2 families), Pseudoscorpiones (2 species of 2 families) and Scorpiones (3 species of 2 families). From them, two new spider species are described and illustrated: Bassaniodes blagoevi sp. n. (male) (Thomisidae) and Mesiotelus deltshevi sp. n. (female) (Liocranidae). Theridion glaucinum Simon,

A checklist is presented comprising 42 species in 21 genera and 10 families of the arachnid order Pseudoscorpiones from Albania. Two taxa are identified only to the genus level – Neobisium Chamberlin, 1930 and Roncus L. Koch, 1873. The checklist was constructed according to available published data, material deposited in the Natural History Museum in Vienna and newly collected material. Individual families contained the following numbers of species: Chthoniidae (8), Neobisiidae (13), Garypinidae (1), Geogarypidae (2), Olpiidae (1), Cheiridiidae (1), Atemnidae (1), Cheliferidae (7), Chernetidae (7) and Withiidae (1). Sixteen species and four families (Garypinidae, Cheiridiidae, Atemnidae, Withiidae) are recorded for the first time in Albania – Chthonius jonicus Beier, 1931, C. rhodochelatus Hadži, 1933, C. tenuis L. Koch, 1873, Ephippiochthonius serbicus (Hadži, 1937), E. tuberculatus (Hadži, 1937), Amblyolpium dollfusi Simon, 1898, Geogarypus italicus Gardini, Galli and Zinni, 2017, Apocheiridium ferum (Simon, 1879), Atemnus syriacus (Beier, 1955), Beierochelifer peloponnesiacus (Beier, 1929), Hysterochelifer cyprius (Beier, 1929), H. meridianus (L. In this paper, we report for the first time two spider species for Albania, four for Bulgaria and two for Greece: Altella lucida (Simon, 1874) (Bulgaria), Eresus moravicus Rezác, 2008 (Bulgaria and Greece), Filistata insidiatrix (Forsskål, 1775) (Albania), Harpactea samuili Lazarov, 2006 (Greece), Loxosceles rufescens (Dufour, 1820) (Albania), Pritha parva Legittimo, Simeon, Di Pompeo et Kulczycki, 2017 (Bulgaria) and Pritha vestita (Simon, 1873) (Bulgaria). The recently described species P. parva is the first report for the Balkan Peninsula, while P. vestita is the first record for mainland Europe. Their congener Pritha nana (Simon, 1868) is removed from the Bulgarian checklist of spiders (misidentification). As a result of our report, the number of spider species increases to 571, 1049 and 1183 in Albania, Bulgaria and Greece, respectively.

The subterranean fauna of both natural and artificial caves in Albania remains poorly studied. Cave colonisation can be clarified by investigating the same process in artificial underground sites. The existence of such a process can be judged by the composition of specific vertebrate and invertebrate species in every site. The biospeleological study carried out in an artificial cave in Përmet in June 2019 provided the following results: two bat species, i.e. Greater horseshoe bat Rhinolophus ferrumequinum (Schreber, 1774) and Mouse-eared bat Myotis myotis species group, probably M. blythii (Tomes, 1857) were observed, a specimen of the Balkan stream frog Rana graeca Boulenger, 1891, representing the first amphibian record for the Albanian cave, was discovered deep inside the cave, nine invertebrate species were found (7 spiders, 1 harvestman and 1 moth), with three of the spider species, i.e. Ceratinella brevis (Wider, 1834), Hogna radiata (Latreille, 1817) and Trachyzelotes barbatus (L. Koch, 1866), being the first records for Balkan caves. All recorded species, except Myotis blythii/myotis (both were previously known), are new to the study area. The total number of species recorded in this site, including the data available in literature, has increased to 29. This high number of species shows that artificial caves, including military installations, represent biodiversity hotspots, comparable to natural underground sites and demand much more attention and further investigations.

In this study, we present new faunistic data on spiders (Arachnida: Araneae) from the Western Balkans. Our findings include the first records of six genera and 23 species for Kosovo: Micaria (2 species), Nomisia (2 species), Allagelena (1 species), Alopecosa (1 species), Ballus (1 species), Cheiracanthium (1 species), Clubiona (1 species), Dipoena (1 species), Enoplognatha (1 species), Eresus (1 species), Hoplopholcus (1 species), Icius (1 species), Mendoza (1 species), Mimetus (1 species), Myrmarachne (1 species), Talavera (1 species), Tegenaria (1 species), Trochosa (1 species), Walckenaeria (1 species), Zodarion (2 species), and Zora (1 species). Additionally, two genera and two species are newly recorded for Albania. One species each is newly recorded for Serbia and North Macedonia. Photographs of the habitus and copulatory organs are provided for all treated species, supporting identification and taxonomic comparisons.

New taxonomic data and distribution records on liocranid spiders in the West Palaearctic are provided. Nine species of Mesiotelus Simon, 1897 are described as new to science: M. alanyensis Zamani, Fomichev, Kaya & Marusik, sp. nov. (female; Türkiye), M. bosmansi Zamani, Fomichev & Marusik, sp. nov. (female; Iran), M. kravetsi Fomichev, Zamani & Marusik, sp. nov. (male; Russia: Dagestan), M. mediterraneus Zamani, Fomichev & Marusik, sp. nov. (female; Türkiye), M. sistanus Zamani, Fomichev & Marusik, sp. nov. (female; Iran), M. tadzhikus Zamani, Fomichev & Marusik, sp. nov. (female; Tajikistan), and M. turanicus Zamani, Fomichev & Marusik, sp. nov. (female; Tajikistan). Due to the misidentification of the first specimen described as the male of M. scopensis Drensky, 1935, all records of this species from Bulgaria, Greece, and Türkiye in fact belong to a different species, which is described here as M. confusus sp. nov. Considering the revised definition of M. scopensis, M. deltshevi Naumova, 2020 syn. n. and M. caucasicus Zamani & Marusik, 2021 syn. n. are proposed as its junior synonyms, and to ensure nomenclatural stability, a neotype is designated for it. The previously unknown females of Agroeca angirasu Zamani & Marusik, 2021 and M. patricki Zamani & Marusik, 2021 are described. The nomen Mesiotelus mersinensis Demircan Aksan, 2023 is here declared to be unavailable. The following species are newly recorded from the listed countries: A. angirasu from Azerbaijan, M. scopensis from Azerbaijan and Georgia, and M. cyprius Kulczyński, 1908 from Türkiye. Three of the previous Iranian records of M. scopensis Drensky, 1935 and the Iranian and Turkmen records of M. kulczynskii Charitonov, 1946 are found to be based on misidentifications. Additionally, the vulva of Sestakovaia annulipes (Kulczyński, 1897) is illustrated for the first time.

Two spider species of the liocranid genus Mesiotelus Simon, 1897 new to the fauna of Turkey are recorded on the basis of female specimens: M. caucasicus Zamani et Marusik, 2021 from Hakkari Province in the Eastern Anatolia and M. deltshevi Naumova, 2020 from Diyarbakır Province in the Southeast Anatolia. The characteristic features are illustarted. In addition, M. scopensis Drensky, 1935 and M. tenuissimus (L. Koch, 1866), two other species found in Turkey, are illustrated. The distribution records of all of these species in Turkey are mapped. With these new records, the number of species belonging to the family Liocranidae in Turkey has increased to 18.

Although the first reports for Albanian spiders date from the 19th century (Simon 1878), the spider fauna of the country is still poorly investigated. Deltshev et al. (2011) compiled all available faunistic data about Albanian spiders and listed 335 species from 36 families. Significant contributions during the last decade were presented by Vrenozi (2012), Vrenozi & Deltshev (2012a, 2012b), Vrenozi & Jäger (2012, 2013), Vrenozi & Dunlop (2013), Helsdingen & IJland (2015), Naumova et al. (2016), Blick (2018), Helsdingen et al. (2018), Komnenov (2018), Deltshev & Indzhov (2018) and Naumova (2020), and the number of species reached 502. The goal of this study is to present the results of a new faunistic survey carried out during short vacation trips throughout four years, to present digital images of some poorly illustrated and difficult to identify species, and to make a contribution to the available knowledge of the Albanian spider fauna.

The small collection of harvestman material from the Vjosa River, from the vicinity of the village Kuta, revealed the presence of 3 species from 3 families: Paranemastoma longipes, Opilio cf. parietinus and Nelima sempronii. The harvestman fauna of Albania is poorly known. The finding of Nelima sempronii at the riversides of the Vjosa is the first record of this interesting species for Albania. The results of the present study, although based on random data, are a valuable contribution to the knowledge of the Opiliones fauna of this country. Furthermore, they emphasize the urgent need for further research as well as protection and conservation of this unique area at the Vjosa River, being seriously threatened by a proposed hydroelectric power dam. Die Auswertung einer kleinen Aufsammlung an Weberknechten aus dem Vjosatal nahe der Ortschaft Kuta erlaubt das Vorlegen einer Artenliste von 3 Spezies aus 3 Familien: Paranemastoma longipes, Opilio cf. parietinus und Nelima sempronii. Die Weberknechtfauna Albaniens ist noch unzureichend bekannt. Der Honiggelbe Weberknecht (Nelima sempronii) wird hiermit erstmals für Albanien genannt. Obwohl die Ergebnisse dieser arachnologischen Untersuchung nur auf Streufunden basieren, sind sie ein wertvoller Beitrag zur Kenntnis der Weberknechtfauna dieses Landes. Zudem unterstreichen sie die Notwendigkeit weiterer Forschung und des Schutzes dieser einzigartigen Landschaft an der Vjosa, die durch energiewirtschaftliche Pläne ernsthaft bedroht ist.

Five spider species were collected at the end of April 2017 in Albania on the River Vjosa near the village of Kutë (40.4754°N, 19.7538°E, 47m a.s.l.). The species are briefly discussed and two of them, Marpissa pomatia and Marpissa nivoyi (Salticidae), are new records for Albania. The importance of the conservation of the natural status of the River Vjosa is discussed. Finally, an updated checklist of the spiders of Albania is presented, which contains 489 spider species.

The IUCN Red List of Threatened Species is the most widely used information source on the extinction risk of species. One of the uses of the Red List is to evaluate and monitor the state of biodiversity and a possible approach for this purpose is the Red List Index (RLI). For many taxa, mainly hyperdiverse groups, it is not possible within available resources to assess all known species. In such cases, a random sample of species might be selected for assessment and the results derived from it extrapolated for the entire group - the Sampled Red List Index (SRLI). The current contribution is the third in four papers that will constitute the baseline of a future spider SRLI encompassing 200 species distributed across the world. A sample of 200 species of spiders were randomly selected from the World Spider Catalogue, an updated global database containing all recognized species names for the group. The 200 selected species where divided taxonomically at the family level, and the familes were ordered alphabetically. In this publication, we present the conservation profiles of 58 species belonging to the famillies alphabetically arranged between Oecobiidae and Salticidae, which encompassed Oecobiidae, Oonopidae, Orsolobidae, Oxyopidae, Palpimanidae, Philodromidae, Pholcidae, Pisauridae, Prodidomidae and Salticidae.

The finding of pseudoscorpion Lamprochernes nodosus (Schrank, 1803) represents the first record of the genus Lamprochernes and only the third record of chernetids in Albania. One female was extracted from compost heap near the field at locality Uznovë, Berat County in Albania. A description of the species is provided based on the main morphological and morphometric characters.

Critical review of the literature on harvestmen from Croatia was made, and data from major collections of harvestmen in Croatia are listed to provide an overview of recent knowledge on the topic. Where needed comments and/or corrections have been added to avoid further confusion. Altogether, 64 valid species and one subspecies have been firmly identified in Croatia. Two further species are undoubtedly present although not yet recorded, bringing the total number of opilionid species to 66 plus one subspecies. Potentially, up to 9-11 further species inhabit the country, and the discovery of further new species cannot be excluded. Taxonomical revisions are required in some taxa. According to present knowledge, the harvestman fauna of Croatia is among the richest ones in the Balkans.

The phalangiid harvestmen genus Graecophalangium Roewer, 1923 is reported from Albania for the first time, by collecting of G. militare (C.L. Koch, 1839) in the Grammos Mts on the southeastern border of the country. The species is redescribed on the basis of the Albanian male specimen. This is the 46th Opiliones reported from the country; notes on its habitat are also given. Distribution of the known Graecophalangium species are depicted on a map, and a key for their identification is given.

Complementary description of Megabunus hadzii (Kratochvíl, 1935) comb. n. is given on a male specimen found in the South Western coast of Albania. Dasylobus arcadius (Roewer, 1956) is redescribed on the basis of the second known specimen found in Evrytania, Greece. Leiobunum rumelicum Šilhavý, 1965 is reported for the first time from Eastern Rhodope Mts., Bulgaria and additions to the original description are presented. Notes on the variability of the Greek populations of Metaplatybunus grandissimus (C. L. Koch, 1839) and Zachaeus crista (Brullé, 1832) are given. Opilio putnik Karaman, 1999 and Opilio dinaricus Šilhavý, 1938 are reported for the first time from Albania, and further notes are given on the distribution and ecology of Megabunus pifkoi Murányi, 2008.

The micro-diverse orders, Opilioacariformes (1 family, 9 genera, 19 species), Ricinulei (1 family, 3 genera, 55 species), Palpigradi (2 families, 6 genera, 78 species), Uropygi (1 family, 16 genera, 103 species), Amblypygi (5 families, 17 genera, 136 species) and Schizomida (2 families, 34 genera, 205 species), are amongst the smallest of all terrestrial arthropod orders. The meso-diverse orders, Solifugae (12 families, 140 genera, 1,087 species) and Pseudoscorpiones (24 families, 425 genera, 3,239 species)[long dash]along with the Scorpiones (1,279 species) and Opiliones (c. 6,000 species) which are not dealt with in this contribution[long dash]are dwarfed by the three mega-diverse arachnid orders, Araneae (c. 36,000 species), Parasitiformes and Acariformes (with a combined total of c. 48,000).

The spider fauna of Albania is still insufficiently studied. The present list was compiled after a critical review of the existing literature data and taxonomic review of some available collections. The study comprises 335 species from 36 families. In this number, 197 species are new to the spider fauna of the country. According to their current distribution the species can be assigned to 18 zoogeographical categories, grouped into 5 complexes (Cosmopolitic, Holarctic, European, Mediterranean, Endemics). Dominant are Holarctic species (56.4%) followed by European (16.4%) and Mediterranean (16.2%). The endemics (8%) are also well presented and reflect the local character of the fauna and the main role of the Balkan Peninsula in its origin and formation.
