Abstract

This study presents two new representations of ships, recently found in Casas del Turuñuelo, Spain, and dated to the end of the 5th century BC. They depict river barges, which supports the importance of river navigation in structuring the central Guadiana region in the Tartessian era. The systematization of all known ship iconography found in the area from the Early Iron Age makes it possible to highlight their homogeneity, and their Mediterranean hallmark. This serves to emphasize the interconnectivity that existed in Iberia's south‐west, fostering a process of cultural hybridization of which the vessels were both result and vehicle. Over the last few decades, river landscapes have been significantly transformed as a result of increased human impact. This transformation is evident in areas such as the middle Guadiana basin, where the impact of both agricultural and hydraulic infrastructures has led to the decontextualization of archaeological sites, resulting in a disconnection between archaeological sites and their own physical environment. In order to analyse the location and geographic contexts of sites from the first Iron Age in the middle Guadiana basin and to detect the existence of human settlement patterns, we designed a methodological approach that combines LiDAR and APSFR data (areas with potential significant flood risk). The main purpose of this method is to detect flood areas and assess the relationship between them and archaeological sites. The result allowed us to obtain a clearer understanding of these societies, their knowledge of the physical environment, and the causes and reasons behind their occupation of certain sites. The validation of the results demonstrated the versatility of this methodological approach, which can be extrapolated to analysing other regions and historical periods.

In this paper we present the results of the research Project “The route of the Estrimnides. Mediterranean Trade and Interculturality in the Northwest of Iberia” (HAR2015-68310-P). The main contribution is the review of the archaeological contexts of several castra (Toralla, Alcabre, A Lanzada, Neixón, etc.) and the imported material, in particular the ceramic finds, including amphorae. This work has made possible to understand the main phases and trade connections, the origin of the material culture, the products in demand, the main agents involved in the transactions and the phenomena of interculturality developed between Mediterranean and local communities along the Late Iron Age and Early Roman stage.

ABstrAct The archaeological interventions carried out in Cacilhas during the 1980s and 1990s have unearthed a pattern of prolonged occupation dating back to the Iron Age. These excavations have yielded large quantities of pottery, the bulk of assemblage recovered , which also includes a crucible and an iron knife. These finds become increasingly relevant when Cacilhas' location in a natural docking area and its proximity to the Quinta do Almaraz settlement are taken into account. This paper aims to evidence the pre-roman finds collected in Cacilhas, analyse the features encountered , in relation to their use and their connection to Almaraz, all the while integrating them in the backdrop of the first half of the 1st millennium BCE in the Tejo estuary. pAlAVrAs-chAVe Idade do Ferro; Estuário do Tejo; Produção local ; Quinta do Almaraz; Cais.

This article presents a new approach towards the territorial model in the central Guadiana valley during the Early Iron Age. The main focus is an analysis of the so-called Tartessian buildings hidden under tumuli. These buildings are large constructions which bear a certain resemblance to the Phoenician architecture of the southwestern Iberian Peninsula. A settlement pattern can be discussed which is unique to the period, and which gives personality to the geographical sphere in which it is found.

The Laja Alta rock shelter paintings (Jimena de la Frontera, Spain) are the clearest existing testimony of sailing vessels from ancient times in the western Mediterranean. The majority opinion of the research has dated the naval scene in the first or the end of the second mill. BC. This article offers new reproductions and data for a better understanding of the figures represented. Based on the results obtained, we propose a different hypothesis. The absolute dates confirm that the rock shelter was used in the IV-III mill. cal. BC., the Late Neolithic and Copper Age. It was a time of important community transformations. Besides, others datas (types of figures, cultural context, pigment analysis by optical reflectance and superposition of figures) do not deviate from the results dates. The topographical distribution indicates that the boats occupy a central position in the rock shelter. Thus, the boats are the main theme of the paintings of Laja Alta and the rest of the motifs are determined by the naval scene. This conclusion has important historical implications for the transfer of technologies, goods and ideas that shaped the societies of the Late Neolithic and Copper Age of the Western Europe and North Africa.
