Who Was the Great Man at Culp's Hill

Abstract

While the history of the Battle of Gettysburg has paid much attention to the events that took place on Little Round Top on July 2, 1863, the events that took place on Culp's Hill have received less attention, they were just as critical to the outcome of the battle. One of the reasons for this phenomenon is the lack of a great man narrative associated with Culp's Hill. This article reviews the events that took place at Culp's Hill over the course of the three days of the Battle of Gettysburg and it notes that while there may be no single individual responsible for the Union victory on that part of the battlefield, it is still a story rich with incidents of heroic action and critical decisions that helped seal the Union victory on July 3, 1863.
