The Association for Fire Ecology (AFE) and Pau Costa Foundation (PCF) are partnering with Regione Toscana and University of Florence to host a conference in Florence, Italy for diverse stakeholders involved in wildfire management. Experts from Europe and around the world are invited to gather in Florence to share fire ecology science and expertise. This conference will be a meeting point for international wildfire and landscape managers, scientists, policy makers, communicators and other representatives from national, regional and local organizations.

BONFIRE – gloBal-scale analysis and mOdelliNg of FIRE behaviour potential (PTDC/AAGMAA/2656/2014)

The overarching goal is to advance the understanding of fire behaviour potential and systematize its prediction on a global scale. This requires compilation of the available fire behaviour informat ion in a worldwide database, and integrated analysis of variation in fire behaviour characteristics. Our expectation is that universal functional relationships will be able to tackle the differences in fire behaviour potential that arise from distinct environmental configurations. The analysis of global fire behaviour and climatic data will enable BONFIRE to accomplish: 1. Characterization and synthesis of regional fire behaviour patterns and assessment of the influences of its environmental drivers, at the scale of broad vegetation types and/or biomes. Results will increase the understanding of fire regime shifts in relation to global change. 2. Development of empirically-based models to predict fire behaviour characteristics, fuel consumption and carbon emissions for (sub)-regional vegetation classification units. Results will provide a sound foundation for fire management and fire research applications. 3. Development of an optimized set of fuel models for (sub)-regional vegetation types to use with semi-empirical fire behaviour simulation tools, as an alternative to empirically-based models. 4. Identification and characterization of regional fire climates and, informed by the fire behaviour models, definition of fire danger classes for (sub)-regional vegetation types. [Show full abstract] years it has been an essential component of many land ecosystems , today wildfires are a recurrent social emergency that modern human and financial resources cannot manage. The present challenges stress the need to enhance the debate on potential solutions according to fire ecology: efficient alternatives to the wildfire suppression at all cost, the use of more traditional landscape management for adaptation of ecosystems under a changing climate, the benefits of prescribing fire to maintain long-term ecosystem services and finally the need to establish a wildfire risk culture through trans-disciplinary science and enhance effective societal engagement. The "Fire Ecology Across Boundaries" Congress to be held in Florence from 20 to 23 October 2020 (http://fireacrossboundaries.org/) will be the opportunity to discuss the ecology and management of fire together with top international experts.

Prescribed burning for land management goals (wildfire prevention, habitat conservation, grazing management) is attracting an increasing interest in Italy. Nevertheless, the lack of a clear legislative framework is one of the main factors which hamper prescribed burning application in our territory. The objective of this study was to analyse the state of art of the normative about prescribed ... [Show full abstract] burning in Italy, stressing the main strengths and weaknesses. In total, 236 legislative documents pertaining the forestry and fire management sectors were analysed. Prescribed burning was ruled in 32 texts of 14 Administrative Regions. The study emphasizes the high heterogeneity at the regional level, which regards the used terminology, objectives, the identification of the personnel involved (the proposer, the planner and the responsible of the implementation), the set of a clear administrative process, the structure of the prescribed burning plan and prescriptions for specific objectives. Innovative and critical aspects are discussed, such as the misunderstanding between prescribed burning and agricultural fire, and between damage and desired effect. In conclusion, useful elements to ameliorate the legislative framework in Italy are suggested.
