Abstract

Between August 2010 and December 2018 monitoring of non-lichenized fungi took place in the garden grounds of the botanical garden of Frankfurt am Main. A total of 523 collections resulted in 341 species of fungi and fungus-like organisms (Oomycota). 315 of the recorded species are new for the garden, including one new record (Diaporthe gloriosa) and five new fungus-host combinations for Germany (Golovinomyces

Three different rust fungi on different bamboo species, Puccinia deutziae [Syn. P. kusanoi], P. longicornis and P. phyllostachydis are portrayed. A former note of P. phyllostachydis within this publication series was revised to P. deutziae. Just recently, Peronospora vincae was reported as new for Germany. A current distribution map of this species is given and the status as neobiont is discussed. New for Austria are Erysiphe akebiae on Akebia quinata and Plasmopara muralis on Parthenocissus tricuspidata and P. quinquefolia respectively. The rare rust fungus Uromyces sublevis on Euphorbia glareosa was confirmed recently at his only known location in Austria. Two recorded host species are matrices novae: Micromeria douglasii for Golovinomyces biocellaris and Euphorbia maculata for Podosphaera euphorbiae. In addition other interesting records are listed, including formerly unknown host species in Germany, e. g. Erysiphe buhrii on Dianthus armeria, Podosphaera euphorbiae on Euphorbia lucida and Uromyces minor on Trifolium campestre. Furthermore, Ranunculus glacialis was found for the first time in Austria being infected with Urocystis ranunculi. A survey of several notes on the occurrence of Arthrocladiella mougeotii in Germany led to a correction of the date of the first record. Successful huntings of several already portrayes fungal species and host species as well as some new records for federal states of Germany and Austria are listed at the end of the publication.

A record of Entyloma on Scorzonera hispanica belongs to a new species that has not yet been described. The plant species was not known as a host for the genus Entyloma before. The North American Microbotryum alsines was found for the first time in Europe on Stellaria media. A record of Erysiphe syringae on Fraxinus pennsylvanica is the first record of this powdery mildew on the genus Fraxinus in Europe. The host species is a matrix nova for this fungus. Puccinia scirpi was rediscovered in Germany after 80 years on Nymphoi-des peltata. Exobasidium schinzianum on Saxifraga rotundifolia, Peronospora ruegeriae on Onobry-chis viciifolia and Urocystis bolivarii on Lolium perenne are reported as new for Germany. Abstract: Some interesting records of plant parasitic microfungi of the Oomycota, Synchytrium (Chytridiomycota), Erysiphaceae, Pucciniomycotina and Ustilaginomycotina collected in Germany and Austria are reported. Several records of the rust fungus Puccinia cynodontis on the aeciaand telia-hosts including the first record on Plantago lanceolata in Germany are presented. The first records of Puccinia scillae-rubrae on Scilla bifolia in Germany since 50 years are portrayed, and furthermore the first record of this rust fungus since 20 years for Austria on the matrix nova Scilla vindobonensis. For Tilletia separata the first collections for Germany since 50 years are presented. A recent distribution map of Melampsora pulcherrima for Germany and the first record of this rust fungus in Austria is given. This paper concludes with a list of some formerly unknown fungi and host species for different plant parasitic microfungi for the federal states of Germany and Austria. The first recent record of Erysiphe geraniacearum on Geranium pratense since more than 100 years in Germany is listed here. Urocystis phlei-alpini on Phleum pratense is reported for the first time in Germany and Caeoma scillae on Scilla bifolia the first time for Austria. Some interesting records of plant parasitic microfungi of the Ustilaginomycotina and Pucciniomycotina are reported from Austria and Germany. Puccinia bellidiastri on Bellidiastrum michelii and Tilletia anthoxanthi on Anthoxanthum nipponicum are presented with the first records from Germany. Melampsora pulcherrima on Mercurialis annua and Entyloma cichorii on Cichorium intybus were found for the first time in the German-speaking area of Central Europe. Furthermore Melampsora liniperda is presented based on collections from Germany from a matrix nova: Linum leonii. Recent collections and the distribution of Melampsora galanthi-fragilis in Germany and Austria are presented and two new host plants (Galanthus elwesii and G. plicatus subsp. byzantinus) for Germany are listed. At the end of the paper some formerly unknown fungi and host species for different phytoparasitic microfungi for the federal states of Germany and Austria are summarised. Zusammenfassung: Vorgestellt werden interessante Funde von Brandpilzen (Ustilaginomy-cotina) und Rostpilzen (Pucciniomycotina) aus Deutschland und Österreich. Puccinia bellidi-astri auf Bellidiastrum michelii und Tilletia anthoxanthi auf Anthoxanthum nipponicum wurden erstmals in Deutschland nachgewiesen, Melampsora pulcherrima auf Mercurialis annua und Entyloma cichorii auf Cichorium intybus erstmalig im deutschsprachigen Raum. Weiterhin wird Linum leonii als matrix nova für Melampsora liniperda vorgestellt. Golovinomyces orontii is a common plurivorous powdery mildew species with wide host range and worldwide distribution, usually occurring as asexual morph. Ascomata (chasmothecia) are rarely formed on most hosts. Phylogenetic analyses based on rDNA ITS and 28S rDNA data of a wide range of powdery mildew collections of G. orontii s. lat. suggested a high degree of genetic heterogeneity of this species, which is undoubtedly not monophyletic. This study revealed that sequences retrieved from numerous collections referred to as G. orontii (s. lat.) split into three distinct main clusters, previously classified as groups 1 to 3. These groups have been genetically and morphologically analyzed, circumscribed, and named. One cluster (group 2), including a sequence retrieved from powdery mildew on the type host of Erysiphe orontii, Misopates orontium, constitutes G. orontii s. str. G. tabaci comb. nov. (≡ E. tabaci) is introduced for the second cluster in group 1 that is genetically and morphologically clearly distinct from G. orontii s. str. The third assemblage of sequences (group 3) comprises powdery mildews on hosts of the composite tribe Cichorieae, including Cichorium and Lactuca spp., and a wide range of hosts belonging to various other plant families for which the name G. bolayi sp. nov. is proposed. Euoidium longipes and Euoidium lycopersici, two additional powdery mildew species on solanaceous hosts, are briefly discussed and, based on previous phylogenetic analyses, reallocated to Golovinomyces. Oidium lactucae-debilis on Ixeris japonica in Asia is tentatively reduced to synonymy with G. sonchicola, i.e., it does not pertain to the G. orontii s. lat. complex. G. orontii s. lat. on Vinca spp. (Apocynaceae), mostly known as asexual morph, represents a separate species only distantly related to G. orontii s. str., which is described herein as Golovinomyces vincae sp. nov. Some re-examined collections on Vinca major from Germany misidentified as G. orontii turned out to belong to Ramularia vincae and represent first records of this species for Germany. Golovinomyces spadiceus is a further plurivorous Golovinomyces species discussed in this work, which, however, does not belong to the G. orontii complex.

The name Golovinomyces cynoglossi s. lat. is traditionally applied to a complex of morphologically similar powdery mildews on hosts of the plant family Boraginaceae. The current species-level taxonomy within this complex is ambiguous due to the lack of phylogenetic examinations. The present study applied phylogenetic methods to clarify the taxonomy of G. cynoglossi s. lat. Phylogenetic analysis of rDNA ITS sequences retrieved from Asian, European and North American specimens revealed that G. cynoglossi s. lat. collections from different hosts involved several species in five clearly separated lineages. Clade I consists primarily of Golovinomyces cynoglossi s. str. on Cynoglossum. Clade III consists of Golovinomyces sequences retrieved from the host genera Symphytum and Pulmonaria. The taxa within clade III are now assigned to G. asperifoliorum comb. nov. Clade V encompasses G. cynoglossi s. lat. on the host genera Bothriospermum, Buglossoides, Echium, Myosotis, and Trigonotis. The taxa within clade V are now assigned to G. asperifolii comb. nov. The species concerned in this study were lecto-and epitypified to stabilize their nomenclature. ARTICLE HISTORY

Plant pathogenic smut fungi in the broader sense can be divided into the Ustilaginomycetes, which cause classical smut symptoms with masses of blackish spores being produced in a variety of angiosperms, and the Exobasidiomycetes, which are often less conspicuous, as many do not shed large amounts of blackish spores. The leaf-spot causing members of the genus Entyloma (Entylomatales, Exobasidiomycetes) belong to the latter group. Currently, 172 species that all infect eudicots are included in the genus. Vánky (2012) recognised five Entyloma species on species of Ranunculus s.lat. Two have been reported only from Ficaria verna s.lat., while three, E. microsporum, E. ranunculi-repentis, E. verruculosum, have been reported to have a broad host range, encompassing 30, 26, and 5 species of Ranunculus, respectively. This broad host range is in contrast to the generally high host specificity assumed for species of Entyloma, indicating that they may represent complexes of specialised species. The aim of this study was to investigate Entyloma on Ranunculus s.lat. using multigene phylogenies and morphological comparisons. Phylogenetic analyses on the basis of up to four loci (ITS, atp2, ssc1, and map) showed a clustering of Entyloma specimens according to host species. For some of these Entyloma lineages, names not currently in use were available and reinstated. In addition, Entyloma microsporum s.str. is neotypified. Six novel species are described in this study, namely, Entyloma jolantae on Ranunculus oreophilus, E. klenkei on R. marginatus, E. kochmanii on R. lanuginosus, E. piepenbringiae on R. polyanthemos subsp. nemorosus (type host) and R. repens, E. savchenkoi on R. paludosus, and E. thielii on R. montanus. For all species diagnostic bases and morphological characteristics are provided. The results in this study once more highlight the importance of detailed re-investigation of broad host-range pathogens of otherwise specialised plant pathogen groups.

The Mycosphaerellaceae represent thousands of fungal species that are associated with diseases on a wide range of plant hosts. Understanding and stabilising the taxonomy of genera and species of Mycosphaerellaceae is therefore of the utmost importance given their impact on agriculture, horticulture and forestry. Based on previous molecular studies, several phylogenetic and morphologically distinct genera within the Mycosphaerellaceae have been delimited. In this study a multigene phylogenetic analysis (LSU, ITS and rpb2) was performed based on 415 isolates representing 297 taxa and incorporating ex-type strains where available. The main aim of this study was to resolve the phylogenetic relationships among the genera currently recognised within the family, and to clarify the position of the cercosporoid fungi among them. Based on these results many well-known genera are shown to be paraphyletic, with several synapomorphic characters that have evolved more than once within the family. As a consequence, several old generic names including Cercosporidium, Fulvia, Mycovellosiella, Phaeoramularia and Raghnildiana are resurrected, and 32 additional genera are described as new. Based on phylogenetic data 120 genera are now accepted within the family, but many currently accepted cercosporoid genera still remain unresolved pending fresh collections and DNA data. The present study provides a phylogenetic framework for future taxonomic work within the Mycosphaerellaceae.

Abstract: Some interesting records of plant parasitic microfungi of the Oomycota, Entorrhizo-mycota, Erysiphales, Pucciniomycotina and Ustilaginomycotina collected in Germany are reported. Entyloma podospermi on Scorzonera laciniata, Erysiphe pulchra on cultivated Cornus florida and Peronospora vincae on cultivated Vinca major are the first records of these fungi for Germany, Austria and Switzerland respectively. The first confirmed collections of Juncorrhiza mari-tima on Juncus ranarius in Germany are portrayed, including a discussion of possible older records. Information about the rare rust fungus Uromyces dianthi and its distribution in Ger-many including comments on its field identification is given. Furthermore, some corrections regarding Phyllactinia species occurring on different hosts in Germany, published in different herbaria or papers, are presented. This paper concludes with a list of some formerly unknown fungi and host species for different plant parasitic microfungi for the federal states of Germany. Zusammenfassung: Vorgestellt werden interessante Funde von Falschen Mehltauen (Oomy-cota), Wurzelgallpilzen (Entorrhizomycota), Echten Mehltaupilzen (Erysiphales), Rostpilzen (Pucciniomycotina) und Brandpilzen (Ustilaginomycotina) aus Deutschland. Entyloma podo-spermi auf Scorzonera laciniata, Erysiphe pulchra auf kultiviertem Cornus florida und Peronospora vincae auf kultiviertem Vinca major sind die ersten Nachweise für Deutschland, Österreich und die Schweiz. Die ersten gesicherten Nachweise von Juncorrhiza maritima auf Juncus ranarius in Deutschland werden präsentiert und es wird auf mögliche ältere Fundangaben in der Litera-tur hingewiesen. Es werden Informationen zur Häufigkeit und zum Befallsbild von dem in Deutschland seltenen Rostpilz Uromyces dianthi gegeben. Für viele Lebewesen bietet die Stadt Frankfurt ein reichhaltiges Mosaik an Lebensräumen, so auch für Pilze. Deren hohe Vielfalt erklärt sich vor allem aus dem großen Waldanteil der Stadt, der Auwald-Bereiche und Standorte mit beträchtlichem Totholz-Anteil beinhaltet. Das Artenspektrum an Waldstandorten entspricht den natürlichen Lebensräumen in der Umgebung von Frankfurt. Friedhöfe, Parks, Spielplätze und Gärten aller Art bieten zudem auch Pilzen Lebensraum, die auf Pflanzen exotischer Herkunft angewiesen sind. Häufig sind dies pflanzenparasitische Pilzarten, deren Anteil insgesamt 25 % des gesamten Artenspektrums der 1528 in Frankfurt gefundenen Pilzarten beträgt. Insbesondere Friedhöfe verfügen häufig über magere Wiesenflächen, auf denen Offenlandarten wie Saftlinge, Wiesenkeulen, Rötlinge und Erdzungen gedeihen, die in der Umgebung von Städten sonst immer seltener werden. Ein wichtiger Standort für bedrohte Pilze in Frankfurt sind die noch vorhandenen Streuobstwiesen. Die Pilzvielfalt in Frankfurt ist trotz der ansehnlichen Zahl registrierter Arten noch keineswegs vollständig erfasst. Viele Pilzarten sind winzig klein und nur mit der Lupe im Freiland zu entdecken. Manche Pilze bilden ihre sichtbaren Fruchtkörper nur in größeren Zyklen, und die Kunst des Kartierers ist es, zur richtigen Zeit am richtigen Ort zu sein. Auch in den Frankfurter Gewässern und im Erdboden leben Pilze. Sie sind nur mit speziellen Methoden zu erfassen. Forschungsergebnisse haben gezeigt, dass auch jahrelange Forschungsbemühungen nur eine Annäherung an die tatsächlich vorhandene Artenvielfalt der Pilze in einem bestimmten Gebiet erbringen. Jedenfalls ist stets mit Neufunden zu rechnen, zu denen aller Voraussicht nach auch Neueinwanderer beitragen werden. Gesichert werden kann die Artenvielfalt der Pilze in Frankfurt durch den Schutz ihrer Biotope, also die Erhaltung von Grünflächen, alten Friedehöfen, Parks, Gärten aller Art, Streuobstwieden und des Stadtwalds mit all seinen Lebensräumen.

This study aims at characterizing the diversity and temporal changes of species richness and composition of fungi in an ecotone of a forest border and a meadow in the Taunus mountain range in Germany. All macroscopically visible, epigeous fungi and vascular plants were sampled monthly over three years, together with climatic variables like humidity and temperature that influence fungal diversity and composition as shown by previous studies. In this mosaic landscape, a total of 855 fungal species were collected and identified based on morphological features, the majority of which belonged to Ascomycota (51 %) and Basidiomycota (45 %). Records of fungal species and plant species (218) for this area yielded a fungus to plant species ratio of 4:1, with a plant species accumulation curve that reached saturation. The three years of monitoring, however, were not sufficient to reveal the total fungal species richness and estimation factors showed that a fungus to plant species ratio of 6:1 may be reached by further sampling efforts. The effect of climatic conditions on fungal species richness differed depending on the taxonomic and ecological group, with temporal patterns of occurrence of Basidiomycota and mycorrhizal fungi being strongly associated with temperature and humidity, whereas the other fungal groups were only weakly related to abiotic conditions. In conclusion, long-term, monthly surveys over several years yield a higher diversity of macroscopically visible fungi than standard samplings of fungi in autumn. The association of environmental variables with the occurrence of specific fungal guilds may help to improve estimators of fungal richness in temperate regions.

Brand-, Rost-, Echte und Falsche Mehltaupilze, Wucherlingsverwandte und einige Flagellatenpilze sind Kleinpilze, die parasitisch auf Gefäßpflanzen (Wirtspflanzen) leben. Alleine im deutschsprachigen Mitteleuropa sind sie mit ca. 1700 Arten vertreten. Sie sind in vielfacher Hinsicht von großem Interesse, nicht zuletzt wegen ihrer hochinteressanten Entwicklungszyklen und wegen der wirtschaftlichen Bedeutung der die Kulturpflanzen schädigenden Arten. Die Erforschung der Kleinpilze erfordert deren Bestimmung. Ein umfassendes Werk liegt nun für die mitteleuropäischen Arten des deutschsprachigen Raums vor. Nach einem allgemeinen Teil folgt ein umfangreicher spezieller Teil mit Bestimmungsschlüsseln. Ausgehend von der jeweiligen Wirtspflanze (Gattung) wird die Bestimmung durch dichotome Bestimmungsschlüssel unter Berücksichtigung makroskopischer und mikroskopischer Merkmale ermöglicht. Angaben zu Verbreitung und Häufigkeit, zum jahreszeitlichen Auftreten sowie Literaturhinweise ergänzen und erleichtern die Bestimmung. Befallsmerkmale werden durch zahlreiche Farbfotos und mikroskopische Merkmale durch Schwarzweißfotos veranschaulicht. Wichtig ist das Buch für all jene Praktiker, die sich mit Naturschutzfragen oder der Bekämpfung dieser Pilzgruppen befassen, aber auch für Wissenschaftler, die in der Grundlagenforschung tätig sind. Das Buch richtet sich somit an Biologen in Beruf und Freizeit sowie an Fachleute in den Bereichen Landwirtschaft, Gartenbau, Pflanzenschutz, Forst, Ökologie und Naturschutz.
