Abstract

Degradation in performance of a 3-phase induction motor has been a major concern in recent times due to unbalance in the power supply. This has given rise to various infiltrates, percolating into the system thus causing massive unbalance in the input side of the workhorses of industry. This paper presents assessment of total harmonic distortion in stator current of an induction motor in presence of unbalance Index Terms-Fast Fourier Transform, d-q plane, Total Harmonic Distortion, Three Phase Squirrel Cage Induction Motor, Unbalance.

Induction motors are known to affect the electrical power system in terms of harmonics. Induction motors fed by unbalanced power systems produce additional current harmonics. These harmonics cause additional power losses in the machine. The method of symmetrical components is often used in this kind of unbalanced operation analysis. In this study, the performance of a three phase induction motor supplied by unbalanced power system due to the various causes has been examined using both experimental method and Matlab/Simulink model.

Induction motors are widely used in industries due to various techno-economic advantages .Voltage unbalance causes a lot of ill effects on induction motors. The problem of voltage unbalanced has attracted special attention amongst electrical engineers dealing with power quality issues in recent past. The adverse effects of voltage unbalance in Induction motors are Over heating, line-current unbalance, derating, torque pulsation, and inefficiency. The overheating leads to winding insulation degradation. This paper examines the proper application of the three phase induction motors when supplied by unbalance Voltage. The proposed work show that poor power quality voltages have bad effects over the motor performance: loss temperature rise, rated hp, efficiency, reliability. Finally this paper presents some recommendations to improve the performance.

The conventional theory of active and reactive power in single-phase or three-phase systems is based on an average value concept, thus making it impossible to define instantaneous active and reactive power in a real sense. On the basis of an instantaneous value concept, the authors have already proposed a new definition of instantaneous active and reactive power in three-phase circuits for arbitrary voltage and current waveforms without any restriction. This is called the instantaneous reactive power theory or the p-q theory, which is considered a basic theory of active power line conditioners such as reactive power compensators and active power filters for harmonic compensation.

This paper estimates motor life when a motor is supplied with a combination of over- or undervoltages with unbalanced voltages. The motor life is predicted by estimating the stator winding insulation life of squirrel cage motors using Arrhenius' equations. Electrical and thermal models are used to calculate motor losses and temperatures, respectively. The thermal model parameters are obtained from simple motor testing techniques rather than from complex methods requiring motor design data
