Fachada variable: método para aplicar una fachada dinámica en Santiago.

Abstract and Figures

There is a growing body of evidence available to indicate that there is often a discrepancy between the in situ measured thermal performance of a building fabric and the steady-state predicted performance of that fabric, even when the building fabric has been modelled based upon what was actually built. However, much of the work that has been published to date does not fully investigate the validity of the assumptions within the model and whether they fully characterise the building. To investigate this issue, a typical pre-1920’s UK house is modelled in Designbuilder in order to recognise and reduce the gap between modelled and measured energy performance. A model was first built to the specifications of a measured survey of the Salford Energy House, a facility which is housed in a climate controlled chamber. Electric coheating tests were performed to calculate the building’s heat transfer coefficient; a difference of 18.5% was demonstrated between the modelled and measured data, indicating a significant ‘prediction gap’. Accurate measurements of air permeability and U-value were made in-situ; these were found to differ considerably from the standard values used in the initial model. The standard values in the model were modified to reflect these in-situ measurements, resulting in a reduction of the performance gap to 2.4%. This suggests that a better alignment between the modelling and measurement research communities could lead to more accurate models and a better understanding of performance gap issues.

Occupant behavior is regarded as one of the major factors contributing to the discrepancy between simulation prediction and real energy use. Over the past several decades, occupants have been represented as fixed profiles of occupant presence in building energy simulation tools. Recently, stochastic models have been introduced to account for dynamic occupant presence. This stochastic approach is based on the premise that occupant presence can be described by empirical and probabilistic transition rules, e.g. Markov Chain.

Low insulation standards and obsolete heating systems of a large amount of buildings in Europe account for disproportional energy consumption. Within this project, the holistic renovation and the results from the monitoring activity of buildings from a field test, located in Southern Germany, are presented. The buildings, built at the end of the 1950s, have been retrofitted with seven different refurbishment layouts. The layouts differ in insulation and engineering system. An installed monitoring system collects thermal indoor environmental conditions and air quality conditions in rooms, as well as data about energy flows at delivery, distribution, storage and generation level, at high time resolution. The monitoring system allows a comparison between the real and the expected energy consumption of the buildings. The energy performance gap was identified and quantified for each refurbishment solution (with values up to 287 % based on calculated savings): on average, the energy performance gap of the entire field test varied from 117 % in 2011, 107 % in 2012, 41 % in 2013 and 60 % in 2014. The occupants’ behavior has been identified as one of the causes for the energy performance gap. Further causes are mistakes in the installation, and malfunctioning of the engineering system. The importance of a monitoring system for buildings with a complex engineering system was confirmed.

A systematic method has been established to perform and analyse in detail the Energy Performance Certification of 21 Faculty Buildings located at the University of Zaragoza (Spain), according to the transposition of Directive 2010/31/EU. First of all, the problem background and a review of the state-of-the-art of the energy certification in buildings is outlined, regarding both the actual state of the Government regulations and the studies undertaken in several countries to assess the energy performance of different types of buildings, residential and non-residential. A summary of the causes found in other studies for the discrepancies between the estimated (by simulation) and actual energy consumption is shown which is afterwards tested and compared with the results found in the present study. Thereafter, the method followed to undertake the buildings’ Energy Performance Certification is explained, and the main results found together with the discussion are detailed, comparing actual vs. estimated energy consumption in the different case studies and proposing reasons for these deviations. The energy consumption breakdown by uses for several buildings is also analysed, and potential improvements for the simulation software are assessed.

Responsive Building Elements (RBEs) are technologies enabling the exploitation of the opportunities offered by the environment and of renewable energy sources at the building scale. Amongst RBE concepts, Advanced Integrated Façades (AIFs) is probably one of the most promising technologies. In fact important players in the field of the façade engineering have started to develop integrated modular façade systems (Multifunctional Façade Modules – MFMs), with a dynamic behaviour interacting with the other building services, to reduce the building energy use and maximize the indoor comfort conditions. In this framework, a research activity aimed at the development of solar and active building skins was carried out. A MFM has been conceived and a prototype realised for experimental evaluations. The work presented in this paper illustrates the outcomes of the experimental investigation of the MFM called ACTRESS (ACTive, RESponsive and Solar), which has been tested by means of an outdoor test cell apparatus. In the paper, the ACTRESS module is presented and its performance assessed by means of standardized and non-standardized building performance metrics. The results of the experimental campaign show an overall very good performance of the technology in terms of improved building energy efficiency, although some critical aspects are revealed too. Moreover the façade module shows a very high degree of adaptability, as different strategies and behaviours can be achieved according to the desired performance or requirements.

Thermal screens are known to reduce heating requirements of greenhouses and therefore are now becoming widely implemented. Previous studies have found that delaying the thermal screens opening after sunrise can increase energy savings. The objective of this paper is to develop an algorithm defining the optimal opening of thermal screens for minimizing heat losses. This control strategy is compared with a control strategy based on a fixed outside irradiance level. Different thermal screens properties are evaluated. Simulations are carried out for a south-facing attached greenhouse located in Montreal. Simulation results quantified the heating energy consumption and the potential energy that can be stored and utilized during the cold period of the year (October to April). A thermally massive north wall acts as a passive thermal storage and buried pipes in the ground are used for additional thermal storage. Results show that for closed greenhouses when excess energy is stored, a control scheme based on heat balance can increase slightly or significantly the total solar heat collected, depending on the type of blind used.

There often is a significant difference between predicted (computed) energy performance of buildings and actual measured energy use once buildings are operational. This article reviews literature on this ‘performance gap’. It discerns three main types of gap: (1) between first-principle predictions and measurements, (2) between machine learning and measurements, and (3) between predictions and display certificates in legislation. It presents a pilot study that attempts an initial probabilistic probe into the performance gap. Findings from this pilot study are used to identify a number of key issues that need to be addressed within future investigations of the performance gap in general, especially the fact that the performance gap is a function of time and external conditions. The paper concludes that the performance gap can only be bridged by a broad, coordinated approach that combines model validation and verification, improved data collection for predictions, better forecasting, and change of industry practice.

Successful building design is becoming an increasingly complex task, due to a growing demand to satisfy more ambitious environmental, societal and economical performance requirements. The application of climate adaptive building shells (CABS) has recently been put forward as a promising alternative within this strive for higher levels of sustainability in the built environment. Compared to conventional façades, CABS offer potential opportunities for energy savings as well improvement of indoor environmental quality. By combining the complementary beneficial aspects of both active and passive building technologies into the building envelope, CABS can draw upon the concepts of adaptability, multi-ability and evolvability. The aim of this paper is to present a comprehensive review of research, design and development efforts in the field of CABS. Based on a structured literature review, a classification of 44 CABS is made to place the variety of concepts in context with each other, and concurrent developments. In doing so, the overall motivations, enabling technologies, and characteristic features that have contributed to the development of CABS are highlighted. Despite the positive perspectives, it was found that the concept of CABS cannot yet be considered mature. Future research needs and further challenges to be resolved are therefore identified as well.
