UBI Global World Rankings of Business Incubators and Accelerators 2019-2020

Authors:

Abstract

Around the world, business incubators and accelerators play a pivotal role in the development of innovative solutions to the technological, economic, and social challenges of the 21st century. Since 2013, UBI Global’s World Benchmark Studies map the proliferation and assess the impact and performance of these key actors in the global entrepreneurship ecosystem. Our research empowers participating organizations to benchmark their capacity to create value for their ecosystems, their client and alumni startups, and for themselves. Since the last iteration of the study (2017-2018), we have significantly increased the sample size from 259 incubators and accelerators to 364 participants in the World Benchmark Study 2019-2020. Moreover, for the first time, we have extended our research beyond university-linked incubators and accelerators to include public, private, and corporate programs. The data collected from the participating programs - hailing from 82 countries - collectively provide fascinating insights into the diversity, agility, and rapid growth of the industry. From Aalborg, Denmark to Zhongshan, China, incubators and accelerators continue the development of visions, business models, revenue streams, and service portfolios that match the requirements of their respective ecosystems. This report presents the Rankings and Recognitions derived from the World Benchmark Study 2019-2020, sponsored by Qatar Development Bank. While traditional incubation and acceleration powerhouses in North America and Western Europe continue to be strongly represented, programs from around the world have captured top spots, underscoring the global importance of university, public, private and corporate incubators and accelerators for successfully nurturing the visionaries and changemakers of tomorrow.

INTRODUCTION
Dear Innovator,
Around the world, business incubators and accelerators play a pivotal role in the

challenges of the 21st century.
Since 2013, UBI Global’s World Benchmark Studies map the proliferation and assess
the impact and performance of these key actors in the global entrepreneurship
ecosystem. Our research empowers participating organizations to benchmark their
capacity to create value for their ecosystems, their client and alumni startups, and for

research beyond university-linked incubators and accelerators to include public,
private, and corporate programs.
The data collected from the participating programs - hailing from 82 countries -
collectively provide fascinating insights into the diversity, agility, and rapid growth
of the industry. From Aalborg, Denmark to Zhongshan, China, incubators and
accelerators continue the development of visions, business models, revenue streams,

This report presents the Rankings and Recognitions derived from the World
Benchmark Study 2019-2020, sponsored by Qatar Development Bank. While traditional
incubation and acceleration powerhouses in North America and Western Europe
continue to be strongly represented, programs from around the world have captured
top spots, underscoring the global importance of university, public, private and
corporate incubators and accelerators for successfully nurturing the visionaries and
changemakers of tomorrow.
I invite you to use this report as a starting point to learn more about these programs
and the amazing work being done by business incubators and accelerators in Africa,

world rankings 19/20 report
the ubi Global world rankings of
business incubators and Accelerators
... No standard definition exists for BAIs [19]; however, some reports and scholars have provided useful descriptions for understanding what these programs are and how they operate. In a 2019 BAI world ranking report, UBI Global provides classifications of incubator, accelerators, and hybrid programs, describing incubators as programs that support early-stage start-ups, accelerators as programs that focus on growing later-stage start-ups, and hybrids as programs that possess characteristics of both incubators and accelerators [20]. Other descriptions of BAIs include Schwartz's [21] discussion on key characteristics of effective incubators, these being networking, subsidized rental space, credibility, business assistance, and collectively shared facilities. ...

The fourth agricultural revolution has resulted in technologies that could significantly support global efforts toward food security and environmental sustainability. A potential means for accelerating the development of these technologies is through business accelerator and incubator (BAI) programs. Using Canada as a case study, this study examines considerations around building agritech BAI capacity for supporting transitions to sustainable, resilient food systems. The research employs expert stakeholder interview and thematic coding methodology to identify opportunities, success factors, challenges/barriers, and actions/approaches for increasing agritech BAIs in a region/country. The study also identifies findings that are broadly applicable to BAIs in general and those that are specific to sectoral (i.e., agritech) and place-specific (i.e., Canada) contexts. The analysis identified four opportunities themes, seven success factors themes, eight challenges/barriers themes, and eight actions/approaches themes. Of the four thematic areas, success factors were the most broadly applicable to different sectoral and place contexts, and challenges/barriers were most specific to the agritech and (to a lesser degree) Canadian contexts. The study elucidates roles, challenges, and ways forward for building agritech BAI capacity in regions and countries for harnessing the opportunities presented by the fourth agricultural revolution and transitioning to sustainable and resilient food systems.
... Whilst there are attempts to rank some of the more measurable aspects of university entrepreneurship such as deliverables from incubators and accelerators (see Meyer and Sowah, 2019), entrepreneurship programmes themselves are notoriously difficult to measure in terms of success. A lack of clarity around outcomes (Fayolle et al., 2016), low level of commitment to evaluation (Duval-Couetil, 2013), and absence of longitudinal analysis (Pittaway and Cope, 2007) represent just some of the obstacles faced in questions of how EE programmes can be measured. ...

Abstract Entrepreneurship education (EE) has become increasingly important for universities. As part of a programme equipping students with the capabilities to start and develop businesses, alongside a broader portfolio of workplace skills, EE is seen as critical at individual and collective levels. Despite these objectives, both models and mediums of EE have seen increased debate, particularly as the entrepreneurship agenda migrates beyond the business school. One prevalent question for EE is which method of delivery is most effective in creating entrepreneurial outcomes. The absence of longitudinal analysis following students’ entrepreneurial careers beyond immediate graduation limits understanding of what types of EE work. Similarly, limitations in the form of EE - formal vs non-formal, focused vs blended - considered in much discussion prevents broader comparative understanding. This working paper sets out a framework and methodology for analysis to address some of these extant gaps. Positioning EE as part of an entrepreneurship centre (EC) model, delivering blended support across an institution via formal and non-formal means, it examines the progress and destination of students engaged with the EC and the blend of EE in which they participate during their studies. The proposed analysis will make three contributions toward EE debates; adding important longitudinal data to evidence on entrepreneurial outcomes, conducting a broader analysis of the effect of different modes of EE, and discussing the value and benefits of an EC model in delivering EE.

Article
Despite significant business opportunities made possible through advancements in technology, readily available digital technologies are often overlooked and not used by new ventures. To address this knowledge gap, this paper looks at the relationships between readily available digital technologies and born-digital new venture capabilities. We use an affordance lens to explore conditions in which born-digital new ventures interact with digital technologies to actualize digital affordances that facilitate the development of important capabilities. First, using the existing literature, we present a research model and its key elements. Then, using data on new ventures in a Canadian university incubator, we conduct fuzzy-set qualitative comparative analysis (fsQCA) and develop seven configurational research propositions as pathways to develop information technology-enabled organizational capabilities in new ventures. Using this retroductive approach, this research builds a context-specific middle-range theory that explains complex interactions between readily available digital technologies and new venture characteristics, where resources are provided by incubators in dynamic environments, to facilitate the development of ITOCs in the new ventures. We close by describing the study’s theoretical and practical implications.
Chapter
As described in Saha and Chakrabarti (South Asian Survey 28:111–132, 2021) ‘COVID-19 has firmly established itself as the single largest security disrupter of this century in the non-traditional sense’. This infectious disease has killed millions, cost trillions of dollars, has put at risk national security, has severely challenged geopolitical relations while closing international borders. It has thus ‘necessitated a recalibration of securitization framework…’. Such events are shaping the security calculus across dimensions such as health, economic, food and energy emerging as interrelated concepts that characterize the security landscape as complex. Within a backdrop of volatility, uncertainty, complexity, and ambiguity (VUCA), the COVID-19 pandemic has stress-tested societal systems and has revealed inherent vulnerabilities and systemic risks nationally and globally. To confront the complex global challenges presented by COVID-19 and those associated with military hypersonic weapons systems, Artificial Intelligence, Climate Change, to name a few, it cannot be business as usual. Secondary to that, we cannot continue to innovate the same way, or at a speed lower than what triggers shocks and disruptions. Deep transformations are required in how we plan, sense, and respond to such shocks and disruptions. The pandemic and other examples of shocks in Defence and Security have highlighted the importance of three things: science in the development of solutions that informs decision making, secondly, building the right internal innovation culture and finally, developing the right external partners to innovate differently and faster. This chapter examines some shocks and disruptions, such as those associated with Defence, Security, infectious diseases, AI and Climate Change and presents how rapidly-developed innovative solutions are now a necessity. The chapter also describes that innovative solutions are not all created the same way, at the same speed or from the same diverse hub/ecosystem—yet must emerge more rapidly to better manage the current crises and to future-proof ourselves against the promises and the perils of the fast arriving volatility, uncertainty, complexity and ambiguity of crises of tomorrow.KeywordsCOVID-19CrisisIdeationInnovation hubsDisruptionVolatilityUncertaintyComplexityAmbiguity

The objective of the paper is to highlight the process behind the design and development of Centech, a world-class incubator located in Montreal and recognized as one of the most successful university incubators in the world. Centech is housed in a cultural heritage building, the old Dow Planetarium, situated in the heart of the innovative district of Montréal, the “Quartier de l’innovation” (QI). Based on a methodology using different sets of data (interviews, series of reports made for the Montréal-Barcelona Summer School on Management of Creativity and Innovation, etc.), the paper shows how the development of Centech was in large part inspired by 22@Barcelona. The conclusion highlights the importance of an iconic collaborative place in the building of a local ecosystem of innovation.

The University of St. Francis’s College of Business and Health Administration operates a campus business incubator for student and community entrepreneurs. The business incubator is an innovative use of space that supports the economic development of the region and entrepreneurial education that includes for-credit and non-credit programming. Incubator programs are not a new concept, but they continue to provide universities a way to connect with businesses in their communities. St. Francis’s program is in its infancy, having opened in 2014, but it provides a model that is contributing value to the small business members utilizing the program, value to regional economic development, and value to the university and its students. This article is a case study of the formation of an incubator program and a general review of initial research questions. The case study is offered as a model for other universities to duplicate in their academic or continuing education units.
