Abstract

The authors report on the findings of case study research, using phenomenological analysis, of eight counseling professionals interviewed in a Western state about the experiences of counseling leadership related to a state counseling association. Participants reported their experiences in leadership in three broad ways: professional identity development, leadership sustainability, and personal barriers/supports to leadership involvement. Implications of findings will be discussed.

We investigated psychological capital (PsyCap) as an antecedent of servant leadership. Findings show that PsyCap was a strong predictor of servant leadership, particularly in counseling students when compared to experienced counseling professionals. Suggestions to develop servant leadership in counseling students, counselors, counselor educators, and supervisors are discussed.

The authors propose the Supervision of Leadership Model (SLM) as an integration and extension of the Discrimination Model (DM) and Socially Just and Culturally Responsive Counseling Leadership Model (SJCRCLM) to address the supervision of counseling leadership for doctoral students. Given the dearth of literature on the supervision of leadership, the SLM addresses a unique and emerging supervisory practice. This manuscript provides a case example and discussion to highlight the model’s enactment and future directions.

This article adapts the Chi Sigma Iota (CSI) Principles and Practices of Leadership Excellence (PPLE) to a school counseling context to enhance leadership excellence. This further bridges the gap between counseling leadership broadly and school counseling leadership. The authors explore the implementation of a Comprehensive Developmental School Counseling Program (CDSCP) through the use of the CSI PPLE to further develop research, training, and practice.

The authors synthesized counseling leadership literature to identify themes of counseling leadership. Using an inductive approach to content analysis, the authors analyzed 11 empirical articles, 9 conceptual articles, and 13 leadership profiles. Results yielded 24 emergent leadership themes that were sorted into 3 groups. Findings pave the way for more comprehensive research on counseling leadership and allow for increased intentionality in teaching, training, and practicing counseling leadership.

The authors used content analysis to explore the application of CSI’s Principles and Practices of Leadership Excellence (PPLE) to CSI chapter leadership through the voices of chapter leaders. With a sample of 50 student leaders, the authors found that CSI chapter leaders engage in behaviors consistent with the PPLE, albeit inconsistently. Implications for research and practice, including emphasis on intentional training to foster leadership excellence, are discussed.

The article aims to advance the use of qualitative research methods to understand group work. The first part of this article situates the use of qualitative research methods in relationship to group work research. The second part examines recent qualitative group work research using a framework informed by scoping and systematic review methods and the synergies between research challenges and qualitative research potential. The third part describes 4 broad quality criteria for qualitative research, illustrates the criteria using examples drawn from examined studies and describes associated pitfalls related to group work research. Implications for training and research are discussed.

This article applies the Integrative Process Model of Leadership to the conceptualization, research, and practice of counseling leadership. The model broadens perspective on leadership to consider processes among leaders, individuals (e.g., followers), groups, and contexts, thereby allowing counselors to better understand how to lead and allowing researchers to study leadership from multiple angles. Implications for counseling leadership research and practice are discussed.

This Q-Methodology study offers a practical understanding of members’ perspectives when joining or renewing state counseling association membership. Four statistically significant views of state association members were suggested by the data and include members valuing active commitment, the latest information, establishment as a professional, and building a community of professionals.

Counselor leadership is vital to advocating for both client wellness and the profession, yet there is little to inform the profession regarding leadership development and practice. A three-year counselor community engagement (CCE) project that provided an opportunity to explore the role of servant leadership and Principles and Practices of Leadership Excellence (PPLEs) is presented. Description of the CCE, project challenges and solutions, implications for practice, and suggestions for future research are provided.

This article familiarizes counseling psychologists with qualitative research methods in psychology developed in the tradition of European phenomenology. A brief history includes some of Edmund Husserl's basic methods and concepts, the adoption of existential-phenomenology among psychologists, and the development and formalization of qualitative research procedures in North America. The choice points and alternatives in phenomenological research in psychology are delineated. The approach is illustrated by a study of a recovery program for persons repeatedly hospitalized for chronic mental illness. Phenomenological research is compared with other qualitative methods, and some of its benefits for counseling psychology are identified. Phenomenology is a qualitative research method originally de-veloped by the philosopher Edmund Husserl. In the tradition of Giambattista Vico, Franz Brentano, and William Dilthey, Husserl broadened the concepts and methods of modern science to include the study of consciousness, profoundly influencing philosophy, other humanities, and the social sciences throughout the 20th century. Husserl formulated scientific methods that are uniquely fashioned to assist psychological researchers in the investigation of human experience and behavior.

Many state departments of education have revised their state school counseling models to reflect the ASCA National Model for school counseling programs. Only a few states have developed statewide evaluation systems to gather information about program effectiveness and/or to promote effective local program evaluation. This qualitative study describes the statewide evaluation systems of two states (Missouri and Utah), which differ greatly in their state educational policy-making contexts. The authors also present recommendations for establishing a statewide evaluation system.

Collaboration among various professional groups to enhance student learning is a very useful strategy. This article describes how one state, Minnesota, over time (1960–1990), employed collaboration among schools, universities, professional organizations, and the State Department of Education to affect student counseling practices where needed. Efforts were directed to investigate and integrate all components of the school counseling profession by beginning with the possible impact of current practice, then researching various implementation models based on appropriate psychological theories, and finally changing counselor certification and graduate education to close the gap between relevant theory and professional practice. Such efforts have supportive implications for the national standards of the American School Counselor Association.

Recognizing, measuring, and developing leadership attitudes and skills in school counselors is needed to support students, school counseling programs, and school communities. Specifically, there is a need to examine transformational leadership attitudes and skills of school counselors that inspire, motivate, and empower individuals to participate in the vision for comprehensive school counseling programs. The construction and exploration of a transformational leadership inventory for school counselors is presented. Through exploratory factor analyses (n = 217) and confirmatory factor analyses (n = 676) with school counselors, a one-factor inventory of transformational leadership evolved. Implications for school counseling research and professional development are offered.

Within the counseling profession, an increase in counselor professional identity development research has been reported. Leadership skills have been assumed to be part of a counselor’s identity; however, leadership identity development of counselors has not received significant attention in the literature. In this article, parallels between professional identity and leadership identity of counselors are explored, and recommendations for supporting this development are provided.

This chapter takes the reader on a step-by-step journey through the process of conducting a qualitative research study using research conducted with Traditional Healers (THs) in Malaysia and how they diagnose and treat cancer. Upwards of 80% of Malaysians consult traditional healers before seeing a medical doctor, resulting in late-stage diagnoses and thus higher mortality rates. However, prior to our research, little was known about the role of healers and their willingness to work with, rather than outside, the Western medical system. Within this context, the theoretical framework, the specific research problem and the research questions were identified. Next, the author discusses purposive sampling and data collection strategies, which included interviews, documents, and observations. She then presents a data analysis exhibit showing how they captured specific data from the interviews to address the research questions. Finally, the author discusses writing and publishing the results of the research.

A phenomenological exploration of multicultural leadership was conducted on the experiences of eight doctoral students identified as emerging leaders by the Association for Counselor Education and Supervision (ACES). Five themes emerged from participant interviews: Awareness of Culture, Programs Fall Short, Depth in Mentorship, Being Inclusive, and In My Future Profession. Recommendations for further research in multicultural leadership within the counseling profession are included.

The authors used grounded theory to explore transformational tasks related to professional identity development of 18 tenured and tenure-track counselor educators in a cross-section sample based on professoriate rank classifications (i.e., Assistant, Associate, or Full). The evolving role of relationships in supporting identity, perceived autonomy in the role of counselor educator, and responsibility in the profession of counselor education developed as the counselor educators transitioned through their careers. Implications for counselor education and the counseling profession are offered.

The purpose of this qualitative grounded theory study was to investigate practicing counselors' professional identity development at nodal points during their career. Through the use of 6 focus groups of beginning, experienced, and expert counselors, 26 participants shared their experiences, and 6 themes emerged to form a theory of transformational tasks of professional identity development. Through these tasks, counselors encountered issues of idealism toward realism, burnout toward rejuvenation, and compartmentalization toward congruency.

The authors used grounded theory to explore professional identity transitions for 23 counselor education doctoral students in a cross-section sample based on nodal points in their programs. The transformational tasks that doctoral students face involve integration of multiple identities, evolution of confidence and legitimacy, and acceptance of responsibility as the source of knowledge about the profession. As the academic and professional honor society of counseling, Chi Sigma Iota (CSI) has been recognized in developing advocacy, leadership, and professional identity in student and professional members. A qualitative, grounded theory study was conducted to investigate experiences of 15 early career counselors who were CSI chapter leaders as graduate students. An emergent theory of CSI chapter leadership and professional identity development in early career counselors is presented. Implications are discussed for counselor educators, CSI leaders, and counseling students and professionals, with suggestions made for future research.

Little is understood about the development of leaders in counseling. This mixed‐method study explored leaders’ progression through leadership endeavors. The quantitative descriptive statistics and qualitative analysis included 58 elected and appointed leaders from the American Counseling Association and Chi Sigma Iota. Data were analyzed to explore experiences that prompted individuals to assume leadership roles in professional counseling organizations. By understanding how leaders evolve, counseling programs and professional associations can foster counselors’ leadership development.

Research traditions serve as a blueprint or guide for a variety of design decisions throughout qualitative inquiry. This article presents 6 qualitative research traditions: grounded theory, phenomenology, consensual qualitative research, ethnography, narratology, and participatory action research. For each tradition, the authors describe its purpose and key characteristics, outline commonly associated fieldwork activities, describe analytic approaches within the tradition, and then discuss strengths and challenges of the approach.

Although advocacy both for clients and for the profession is essential for the future of counseling and counselors, advocacy for the profession has received little systematic attention. A national plan for advocacy is needed, the effectiveness of which depends on achieving consensus concerning professional identity, promoting a positive public image, establishing effective intraprofessional and interprofessional collaboration, and obtaining the participation of each counselor in advocacy activities. Specific professional advocacy skills and techniques are described.

The School Counseling Leadership Team (SCLT) is a model of a collaborative team formed to advocate for the transformed role of professional school counselors. The members of the SCLT included school district counseling supervisors, counselor educators, and lead- ers of statewide school counselor organizations. This article reviews the need for and evolution of the SCLT, its goals, accomplishments, and future plans. Suggestions and guidelines are offered for replicating the model.

This book presents a disciplined, qualitative exploration of case study methods by drawing from naturalistic, holistic, ethnographic, phenomenological and biographic research methods. Robert E. Stake uses and annotates an actual case study to answer such questions as: How is the case selected? How do you select the case which will maximize what can be learned? How can what is learned from one case be applied to another? How can what is learned from a case be interpreted? In addition, the book covers: the differences between quantitative and qualitative approaches; data-gathering including document review; coding, sorting and pattern analysis; the roles of the researcher; triangulation; and reporting.

Leadership and leader behavior are important topics for any professional discipline. However, these issues have been neglected throughout the entire short history of counseling. Despite the fact that many counselors attain various leadership positions, little attention has been paid to training for leadership. While much has been written about the various roles of counselors, leadership and the behavior of leaders are rarely the focus. It is our contention that counselors, because of their unique training, can be effective leaders in a wide variety of settings. This article argues for a greater emphasis by counselor education on the role of counselor as leader.
