Every year about 95% of new products fail for a simple reason that most customers do not have the time or
energy to think about the advantages or disadvantages of the products they place in their shopping carts, so they
rely on shortcuts to make a purchase decision such as quality, beauty and excellence of product packaging.
Packaging becomes part and parcel of our contemporary life especially in the continuous development for the
conception of marketing. It becomes one of the basic dimensions for the concept of production because it plays
big role to emphasize the mental image of the product on the consumer’s side. The importance of packaging
leads several of marketing thinkers to consider it as enclosed marketing mix elements and one of corner stone
in which goods depend on its success process. Therefore, the current study aims to study the c oncept and the
importance of packaging and its role in attracting the consumer’s attention, and to determine the difficulties that
the companies undergo in the field of packaging. The study depends on assembling the primary data on ques-
tionnaire designed especially for this purpose, and distributed to 600 consumers in Riyadh city. In addition to
that secondary data is collected from resources related to the study subject. Simple statistical analysis is used
to analyze the data. The results of research confirm the big role for the packaging in consumer attraction in
study sample with all dimensions (design, color, size, and shape). The most important recommendation of the
study is that to adopt a clear policy for packing in industrial organizations that cope with high technological
development and the fast changing in consumer's tastes. It must be taken into the consideration the modern
marketing orientations in product's packaging including the green marketing that depends on using material that
has a little environmental effect at packaging process compared with traditional methods.

1. Introduction
In the light of the openness of the market and the convergence among the markets, the markets are crowded with the different
commodities, as one can see the one commodity comes in shapes and different substitutes, consequently, it becomes necessary
for the organization to recognize its commodities among other existed ones in the market in order for the customer to find the
commodity very easily (Grönroos, 1982; Klimchuk & Krasovec, 2013). Therefore, the organization relies on the strategy of
packaging in recognizing its commodities from other commodities to attract consumer’s attention to some particular com-
modity. In other words, the packaging or cover may become the main reason behind the consumer’s demand on one commod-
ity among others. The specialized and theoretical references refer that the covers and the packaging are not the newly born
thing of the modern age, but they were used since the ancient time, whereas Leather, baskets, pottery and glassware for
packaging, and in the period of the post-World War packaging have become increasingly important in various countries of
the world. The prevalence of self-service stores and automated sales through machines, the spread of modern materials in the
field of packaging such as plastic, paper, aluminum, wood, glass, carton, iron and other materials, and in recent years the
development of the concept of packaging is no longer limited to the purpose of protecting goods from damage, but has also
become a marketing tool to influence consumer trends in the purchase of goods. Packaging is of great importance for the
consumer and the organization together, so the research started from the question:

Is there any important role for the packaging in attracting the consumer’s attention to any particular commodity? To answer
this question, a research is conducted to examine the changes in the packaging and its role in attracting the attention of the
customers.
Packaging has been under tremendous investigation by different researchers. Azad and Masoumi (2012) determined important
factors influencing competitive advantage associated with packaging and determined eight independent variables including
packaging endurance, easy distribution, customer promotion through packaging, packaging structure, packaging as silent
advertiser, diversity of packaging, clean and healthy packaging and innovation in packaging. The results confirm that all
mentioned factors influence competitiveness, effectively. Azad and Mohammadi (2013) attempted to determine essential
factors impacting on packaging dairy products. The study implemented factor analysis to determine important factors based
on a questionnaire distributed among some employees of Pegah dairy producer and determined five factors including
infrastructure, awareness, design and communication as important factors influencing consumers. Benachenhou et al. (2018)
investigated on the effect of marketing innovation and the visual and verbal elements of packaging on customers purchase
intentions. They demonstrated that marketing innovation and the visual and verbal elements of packaging influenced on the
purchase intentions of the customers of this brand. Arora et al. (2017) identified and analyzed the effect of critical success
factors (CSFs) influencing technology implementation in Consumer Packaged Goods (CPG) supply chain. The study revealed
“Inter-Organizational”, “Organizational”, “CPG Sector Specific”, “Human” and “Program Manage-ment” CSFs influence
successful technology implementation in CPG supply chain. Muslim et al. (2020) examined the effect of social media
experiences on attitudes and behavioral intentions towards Umrah package among generation X and Y in Malaysia. The study
confirmed that sharing of contents of social media experiences could maintain a significant and positive effect on behavioral
intentions. Rundh (2009) described how packaging design could contribute to product development through investigating on
the design process of a package from external and internal factors. According to Lee and Lye (2003), packaging expenses
includng material and direct labor are major part of a product's manufactured expenditure an it is important to reduce such
costs as much as possible. Thus, it is important to manage packaging costs to reduce the unnecessary costs without losing
customer’s demand. Svanes et al. (2017) discussed on how to plan and implement a sustainable packaging to promote business
development. Clement (2007) performed an empirical investigation to determine the visual effect of in-store buying decisions.
The study focused on an eye-track experiment on the visual effect of packaging design.
2. Theoretical framework
2.1 The Research Problem
The companies encounter many problems in the process of packaging their products, among them is the difficulty to choose
covers and packaging that attract the consumer’s attention, In addition, they ignore the role played by the choice of packag-
ing in attracting consumer attention to the commodity, as well as the lack of proper and orderly selection of packaging. Ac-
cordingly, the problem of research can be crystallized in the following question:
Does packaging have a role in attracting consumer attention to the commodity?
This main question the following questions arises from
- Does the design of the casing and packaging have any role in attracting the attention of the consumer towards the com-
modity?
- Does the size of the package and the packaging play an important role in attracting consumer attention to the commodity?
- Does the shape of the package and the packaging play an essential role in attracting consumer attention to the commodity?
- Does the color of the packaging and packaging have any impact attracting consumer attention to the commodity?
2.2 Research Hypothesis
In order to address the problem and to achieve the objectives of the research, a hypothesis scheme is designed which reflects
the relationship of research variables, including packaging and attract the attention of the consumer towards the commodity
and shown in Fig. 1.

2.3 Research Hypotheses
The Main Hypothesis
There is a significant correlation between packaging and attracting the consumer’s attention towards the commodity, and from
this relationship the subdivided hypotheses have been branched as follows
The First sub-hypothesis: There is an important linking between the packaging and attracting customer’s attention towards a
commodity.
The Second Sub-hypothesis: There is a significant correlation between the size of the package and the packaging in attracting
consumer’s attention towards the commodity.
The Third Sub-hypothesis: There is a significant correlation between the shape of the package and the packaging in attracting
consumer’s attention towards the commodity.
The Fourth hypothesis: There is a significant correlation between the color of the package and the packaging in attracting
consumer attention towards the commodity.
3. Research Methodology
In order to achieve the objectives and hypotheses of the research and to address the problem of research, a descriptive and
analytical approach was adopted using the questionnaire. The sample of the research includes 600 consumers in the city of
Riyadh, randomly and the number of questionnaires received and valid for analysis was 480 questionnaires. The collection of
the secondary data was conducted through depending on the available sources and references related to the research variables.
As for the primary data, the questionnaire was adopted as a main tool for collecting this data; where questions were prepared
that clarify the role of packaging in attracting the attention of the consumer. The questionnaire included 26 items distributed
on the research variables. After finishing the preparation of the initial formula of the standards of the study it was presented
in the form of a questionnaire to five arbitrators and experts in the field of marketing and business administration. The experts
were asked to mention their views about the study tool and the validity of the items to represent the its variables, and they
were also asked to edit, delete to what they see as appropriate for the purpose of measuring the credibility of the tool of the
study, and after the questionnaire is returned from the all experts their responses were analyzed and their notes were taken
into consideration, and these items that obtained less than(80%) were deleted. In the light of all that the necessary amendments
for the questionnaire and it was finalized. To ensure the extent of the stability of the standards Cronbach Alpha is calculated
using the following (Anastasi, 1982).

Applying the above equation, it was found that the coefficient of stability of the research scale was 0.79, and that percentage
can be considered acceptable in the researches of administration and humanity from a scientific and statistical point of view.
The researcher has relied on a number of statistical methods in order to examine the hypotheses of the research like frequen-
cies, percentages, Linking Analysis, Inclination analysis. Table 1 shows the results of the data collected.

According to Fig. 1, it can be explained that there were more respondents were male, namely 392 people with a percentage of
81.6%, while 88 respondents were female with a percentage of 18.4%. Also, it was found that respondents with age ≤ 30 years
amounted to 372 people with a percentage of 77.5%, respondents with ages 31-40 years totaling 88 people with a percentage
of 18.3%, respondents with ages 41-50 years totaling 16 people with a percentage of 3.3%, and respondents with age ≥ 50
years amounted to 4 people with a percentage of less than one percent. In addition, nearly 41% of the participants in our
survey hold university education. Finally, the majority of the people who participated in our survey earned more than 7000
Saudi Riyal.
4. The results, discussion and conclusion
In this section, we present the results of testing the hypotheses of the survey.
4.1. The hypotheses of the linkage
The Main Hypothesis
This hypothesis has stipulated that there is a positive and significant relationship between the independent variable (Packag-
ing) and the dependent variable (attracting the attention of the Consumer towards the commodity). The implementation of
Kolmogorov Smirnov test has indicated that the data were normally distributed and use Pearson correlation to test the hypoth-
eses. Table 2 shows the results of testing the components of the main hypothesis.

As we can observe from the results of correlation test, all independent variables have positive correlation with dependent
variable when the level of significance is one percent. The highest correlation is between packaging and customer attention
followed by design, shape, color and size of packaging. Next, we have implemented a regression test to verify the relationship
and Table 3 shows the results of some basic statistics such as t-student, f-value.

According to the results of Table 3, the coefficient of R-Square is equal to 0.47 which means the independent variables can
describe approximately 47% of the changes of the dependent variable. T-value is meaningful when the level of significant is
one percent and F-value is also meaningful which means there is a linear relationship between the variables. Table 4 also
shows the results of the regression analysis.

According to the results of Table 4, the following results can be achieved:
- The first sub-hypothesis: This hypothesis reports that there is a significant relationship between the design of the packaging
in attracting consumer’s attention to the commodity, and according to the results we understand that the design of the pack-
aging affects the attention of the consumer towards the commodity by (0.38, p-value=0.000) and the hypothesis is confirmed.
-The Second sub-Hypothesis: This hypothesis reports that there is a significant relationship between the size of the packaging
in attracting consumer’s attention to the commodity. The results show that the size of the packaging affects the attention of
the consumer towards the commodity by (0.23, p-value=0.000) accordingly the hypothesis is accepted.

-The Third Sub-hypothesis: This hypothesis reports that there is a significant relationship between the shape of the packaging
in attracting consumer’s attention to the commodity. According to the results the shape of the packaging affects the attention
of the consumer towards the commodity by (0.46, p-value=0.000) which confirms the hypothesis.
- The Fourth Sub-hypothesis: This hypothesis reports that there is a significant relationship between the color of the packaging
in attracting consumer’s attention to the commodity, and the results show that the color of the packaging affects the attention
of the consumer towards the commodity by (0.30, p-value=0.000) and the hypothesis is accepted.
Based on the results of our survey, we suggest for the development of a clear policy for packaging in industrial organizations
in line with the huge technological developments and rapid changes in consumer tastes. Moreover, there is a need to consider
modern marketing trends in packaging products, including the concept of green marketing, which is based on the use of
materials for packaging with a relatively lower environmental impact compared with traditional methods. Moreover, the In-
dustrial Revolutions in particular need to be considered by looking at the consumers’ opinions and impressions towards their
products, services which are introduced to them in order to know the deficiencies in its productive and promotional activities.
The institutions have to rely on the practical steps in introducing their products for the market and focus more on the
knowledge for determining the factors of success or failure of the products, and the care of satisfying the desires and the
requirements of the consumer, as it is the corner stone and the starting point and ending point as well in any productive or
promotional process.

The research looks into which factors engineers, contractors, dealers, and customers in Tamil Nadu's Virudhunagar District consider while making paint purchases. Manufacturers and sellers must comprehend these preferences in order to improve their market position. Using structured questionnaires and advanced data analysis tools, the study collected primary and secondary data using exploratory and descriptive research approaches. The results showed that the most important elements were brand recognition, cost, durability, and product quality. While consumers were more influenced by brand image, promotional offers, and after sales support, engineers and contractors placed a higher priority on performance and technical features. Dealers prioritized customer recommendations and product availability. Long term partnerships, specialized projects, and credit facilities increased brand loyalty, making Asian Paints and Nippon the most popular brands in the area. According to the research findings, customized marketing tactics can greatly increase market share and brand loyalty. Paint manufacturers may better match their goods and advertising campaigns to local consumers expectations by being aware of these regional preferences, which will support the Virudhunagar market's steady growing.

This study systematically reviews 97 publications from 1997 to 2024 to analyse the intellectual structure of research connecting green production processes and consumer behaviour. We identify five distinct knowledge clusters through bibliometric analysis and the theory-context-characteristics-methodology framework: strategic consumer sustainability innovation, green marketing and circular economy integration, supply chain carbon management, sustainable development and energy management, and green product development. China is the leading contributor with 18 documents, while the Journal of Cleaner Production emerges as the most influential publisher. This study also identifies eight theoretical directions for future research, with digital technology integration and cross-cultural analysis emerging as primary areas for development. Additional research directions include how artificial intelligence can predict sustainable consumption patterns, how cultural influences affect green marketing effectiveness, and how stakeholder engagement affects sustainability promotion. The findings contribute to understanding the dynamic interaction between production processes and consumer behaviour in sustainability contexts while providing a comprehensive framework for future research. The study’s limitations include its focus on Scopus-indexed and English-language publications, suggesting opportunities for broader investigation.

Sheeting machines play a crucial role in the packaging industry, making parameter optimization essential for enhancing efficiency. This study applies the Taguchi method to optimize key operational factors: roller speed, brake frequency, and pressure. Using ANOM and ANOVA, roller speed was identified as the most influential factor, contributing 82.76% in ANOM and 87.29% in ANOVA, followed by brake frequency (7.08% in ANOM, 7.36% in ANOVA). The F-test (95% confidence interval) confirmed that pressure had an insignificant effect, leading to its exclusion via a pooling-up strategy. Error contributions remained below 15%, ensuring that no critical factors were overlooked. Among interactions, only the roller speed–pressure (A × B) interaction significantly impacted production speed. The optimized parameters increased throughput from 33 to 42 sheets/min (27.3% improvement) and enhanced production robustness (S/N ratio) from 30 to 32.49 (8.3% increase). These findings confirm the effectiveness of the Taguchi method in refining sheeting machine performance.

This study systematically examines POP MART's unique circumstances using the blind box business model. Conclusion: This research will aid other companies that want to enter or grow their blind box market or adopt a similar business approach. This study applied the POP MART and blind box brand case studies, specifically the theoretical and applied marketing implications.

The rapid growth of the Ethiopian dairy supply chain has raised concerns regarding food-borne pathogens and antibiotic-resistant bacteria. Therefore, it is crucial to have reliable methods for identifying bacteria and testing their susceptibility to antimicrobials in order to address public health concerns. The Vitek 2XL compact system is emerging as a promising tool due to its user-friendly nature and faster reporting times for microbial identification and antimicrobial susceptibility testing (AST). However, its application in yogurt analysis has been limited so far. To the best of our knowledge, this study is the first to use the Vitek 2XL system to assess the occurrence and antimicrobial susceptibility profiles of Escherichia coli, Salmonella spp., and Staphylococcus aureus isolates from unbranded and branded yogurt sold in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. The findings from this research provide valuable insights into yogurt safety and aim to improve food safety practices in the region. A total of 40 yogurt samples, consisting of 20 branded and 20 unbranded were collected from retail markets. The samples were cultured using International Organization for Standardization reference analytical methods. The VITEK 2 XL Compact system (bioMérieux) was employed to confirm the presumptive colonies and perform antimicrobial sensitivity testing, following the manufacturer’s instructions. The overall prevalence of E. coli and Salmonella spp. was 14/40 (35%) and 3/40 (7.5%), respectively. However, S. aureus was not detected in the examined yogurt samples 0/40 (0%). The antimicrobial susceptibility testing revealed that 7% to 28% of E. coli isolates were resistant to 13 different antibiotics. However, high susceptibility was observed to Gentamicin (100%), Amikacin (93%), Marbofloxacin (93%), and Pardofloxacin (93%). For Salmonella spp., all isolates were resistant to Ampicillin (100%), Pardofloxacin (100%), Doxycycline (100%), and Tetracycline (100%). In contrast, 67% of Salmonella spp. isolates were susceptible to Amoxicillin/Clavulanic acid (67%), Cefpodoxime (67%), Cefovecin (67%), Ceftiofur (67%), and Neomycin (67%). The results indicate that the tested yogurt samples may pose a risk of foodborne illnesses due to the presence of pathogenic bacteria. Additionally, the findings highlight a public health concern related to potential antibiotic resistance.

Food packaging attributes are some of the main drivers of consumer choice and food waste, an ongoing and significant problem worldwide. Food packaging material, packaging graphics and colours, and packaging size and shape influence consumers. This study aims to establish the relationship between food packaging attributes such as packaging material, graphics and colours, and size and shape, and how these factors influence the purchase decisions of Food Services students. In the present study, a set of questionnaires was distributed through an online survey to 133 respondents, focusing only on UiTM Terengganu Food Services students' stay within the college accommodations. The reliability test, normality test, and multiple linear regression analysis were conducted. The factors that appear to influence food product purchase decisions among Food Services students at UiTM Terengganu colleges include the packaging material, the graphics and colors of the packaging, as well as the size and shape of the packaging. This research thus proves the potential role of packaging design in reducing food waste and promoting more sustainable patterns of student consumption

So, this research paper discusses consumer buying behaviour towards product packaging emphasizing how various packaging elements such as package design, package colour, package material, and package sustainability affect consumer perceptions and purchasing decisions. The relationship between the independent and dependent variables was also determined by this study. Research Objectives: The main objective of this study is to understand the product packaging effects on consumer buying behaviour. Research Method: Structure questionnaire 105 responses were taken for the study. Data analysis with the regression, coefficient, and Kruskal-Wallis Test. Results: From the study it has been revealed that eco-friendliness and the colour of the package significantly affect the buying behaviour of the customers. Other factors like package material, attractiveness, quality packaging, and hygiene packaging have no effect on the buying decisions of customers. Conclusion: The analysis showed that packaging has been shown to be the important component which impacts consumer buying behaviour. Colour of the packet which attract customers similarly these days' people have shown concerned on environment which is good for society and people prefer eco-friendly packaging of products. Local perfume brands are typically successful due to their distinct strategies and product features. The purpose of this study is to determine how packaging visual elements influence consumer purchase intentions, focusing particularly on the packaging, material, and typography of information. Furthermore, the study examines how perceived quality mediates the relationship between selected packaging elements and consumer purchase intentions. We used quantitative data collected through a field survey using structured questionnaire adapting survey items from previous studies. Total 347 respondents from Oman participated in the survey. We used the Partial Least Square Structural Equation Modelling (PLS-SEM) to analyse data. The findings revealed that packaging design and typography of information positively influence purchase intention of customers. Packaging material was found to be insignificant to influence the purchase intention. It was found that perceived quality partially mediated the relationship between independent variables (packaging design, typography) and purchase intention. In addition, there was full mediation of perceived quality in the relationship between packaging material and purchase intention. This study contributes to the literature by providing an insight into Omani consumers' attitudes regarding the aesthetics of packaging, perception of quality, and purchase intention. In the context of local market, the study suggests managers use visual elements of packaging to attract customer for increasing the likelihood of purchase. To gain a better understanding of marketing communication efforts, future research might look at the type of material as a predictor and assess the effect of gender and prices on packaging elements and purchase intention.

This study explores the impact of product packaging on consumer buying behavior, focusing specifically on Jambo Drinking Water in Nyegezi Ward, Mwanza City, Tanzania. The research investigates two key aspects of packaging: design and convenience, using the AIDA (Attention, Interest, Desire, and Action) model as a framework to understand how packaging influences consumer decision-making. A quantitative research approach was employed, with a population of 28,454 and a sample size of 379 respondents, determined using the Krejcie and Morgan table. Random sampling was used to ensure an equal chance of selection for all participants. Data was collected through questionnaires and analyzed using multiple regression analysis with SPSS version 20.0. The results revealed that packaging design significantly influences consumer choices, with a coefficient of 0.322, while convenience emerged as the most influential factor, positively affecting buying behavior. The study found that packaging plays a crucial role in capturing consumer attention and stimulating interest and desire, ultimately driving action. The findings suggest that Jambo Group of Companies should focus on improving packaging design and enhancing convenience to better align with consumer preferences. Limitations of the study included challenges in respondent engagement and time constraints. Based on these findings, recommendations include ongoing improvements in packaging strategies and greater collaboration across departments within Jambo Group of Companies to enhance product appeal and customer satisfaction.

This article investigates the impact of product cost management on the performance of the food manufacturing companies in Tripoli, Lebanon. This article purpose is to explore the suitable application related to cost management and the performance of the food manufacturing. The methodology style applied is the descriptive method and the quantitative style were examined. A sample size of 84 respondents is distribute between 12 companies with 7 respondents per company. The SPSS version 26 was interpreted for analyzing the collected data from the sample size. The results of this article define that product cost management has a positive impact of on the performance of companies of the food manufacturing companies in Tripoli, Lebanon. It is recommended to control the level of fixed and variable cost below to the total cost of the competitor’s product.

The development of Islamic tourism such as Umrah does not get much attention in the literature though there are 6 million people all around the world performing Umrah every year. Nowadays, social media has been recognized as an important tool in building and maintaining the image of tourist destination especially in the Umrah context. Thus, the purpose of this study was to examine the effect of social media experiences (interactions and sharing of contents) on attitudes and behav-ioral intentions towards Umrah package (booking decisions and electronic Word of Mouth) among generation X and Y. Sums of three hundred eighty-four respondents were engaged as the respondents. The population of this study was among Malaysian Muslim citizens who had social media experiences in seeking online information and knowledge about Umrah and already performed Umrah. The data then was analyzed using the Statistical Package for Social Science (SPSS) and Partial Least Squares (PLS) software. The findings of this study confirmed that sharing of contents of social media experiences has significant and positive relationship on behavioral intentions (book-ing decisions and electronic Word of Mouth).

The aim of this article is to study the impact of marketing innovation and the visual and verbal ele-ments of packaging on customers purchase intentions. After a brief literature review, an empirical study is conducted among 140 customers of Coca-Cola brand in Tlemcen city. To this end, a model of intention has been developed to be tested by structural equations modeling. The results of this study showed that marketing innovation and the visual and verbal elements of packaging directly affect the purchase intentions of the customers of this brand.

Packaging plays an essential role on supplying different materials such as dairy products. The first thing people may look into when they purchase dairy products such as milk, cheese, etc. is associated with the packaging characteristics. This paper attempts to find important factors influencing on packaging dairy products. The study uses factor analysis to detect important factors based on a questionnaire consists of 28 questions in Likert scale, which is distributed among 200 regular employees of Pegah dairy producer. Cronbach alpha, Kaiser-Meyer-Olkin Measure of Sampling adequacy and Bartlett's test of Sphericity approximation Chi-Square are 0.81, 0.679 and 844.475, respectively and they are within acceptable limit. The study has determined five factors including infrastructure, awareness, design and communication as important factors influencing consumers.

The primary objective of this paper is to detect important factors, which are influencing competitive advantage. The proposed model of this paper uses sampling technique to measure characteristics of society. There are eight independent variables for the proposed study of this paper including packaging endurance, easy distribution, customer promotion through packaging, packaging structure, packaging as silent advertiser, diversity of packaging, clean and healthy packaging and innovation in packaging. The proposed study uses structural equation modeling to either accept or reject all hypotheses associated with the proposed study of this paper. The population of this study includes all managers and experts who are involved in packaging products. We used simple sampling technique and chooses 300 from a population of 450 people who are considered as the population of this survey. Cronbach alpha was determined as 0.732, which is above the minimum acceptable level. The results confirm that all mentioned factors influence competitiveness, effectively.

This article describes the impact of visual attention on consumers' in-store buying behaviour. Through an eye-track experiment, it demonstrates the advantage of a behaviour model that addresses visual attention and an increase in visual stimuli during the process. It reveals that consumers exhibit a muddled search strategy where packaging design influences the decision process in several phases. Five phases were found in an in-store decision process, and the post-purchase phase seems to be essential for even low-level in-store decision processes. Further knowledge on packaging design elements is needed for a broader understanding of visual influence during in-store purchase decisions.

Describes how service businesses, who have most direct contact with consumers, seem to be the last to adopt a consumer-oriented marketing concept. Theorizes over service marketing and how it stands at the same point as industrial marketing did some ten years ago. Postulates that general theories or frameworks for service marketing development seems to have followed two quite different paths. Says that one approach, which covers services offered by service companies, should be changed in a more product-like manner, enabling the application of existing marketing theories. Compares the second approach, which is a notion that services are different, compared with physical products, holding that marketing concepts and models have to be developed in a more service-like direction. Reports that findings herein are based on both theoretical and empirical research and that service marketing theory is the result of an ongoing research project, begun in 1976. Concludes by theorizing that service-marketing theory, as presented, can only be applied to part of a service firm's total marketing function.

This study describes a holistic methodology for sustainable packaging design. This methodology studies the combined systems of packaging and the packaged products across the whole distribution chain from manufacturer to end consumer and the life cycle from raw material extraction to the waste phase. It contains a number of indicators that are grouped into the following main categories: environmental sustainability, distribution costs, product protection, market acceptance and user friendliness. The methodology integrates a number of different analytical methods. It is intended to be used in packaging design and optimisation, for idea generation, decision support and as documentation of properties of existing packaging systems. The study describes experiences with the methodology from one case study in the Norwegian Food Industry. The experiences show that the methodology is very comprehensive, and gives a good overview of the properties of a packaging solution. It enables quantitative comparisons between different packaging solutions throughout the design process. The methodology reduces the risk of implementing sub-optimal packaging solutions. An additional benefit of the methodology is gained by working in cross-functional teams. One potential drawback is that the methodology can be resource and data intensive. The methodology can be used as a tool box in packaging design, i.e. it is not necessary to use all methods and quantify all indicators to gain benefit. However, all indicators and requirements should be evaluated and considered. In all cases, it should be considered to include additional indicators if important sustainability issues have not been addressed. Copyright © 2010 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Packaging costs (direct labor and material) account for a substantial portion of a product's manufactured cost and so it is desirable to minimize these costs. And since major productivity gains have already been realised in manufacturing operations, the last frontier for productivity improvements appears to be in logistics. A formal methodology is therefore proposed to assess the efficiency of manual insertion and packing operations such as folding, insertion, labeling, sealing and scanning. Through this methodology, inefficient packaging operations can be identified and improved upon. This paper also discusses how standard manual handling and insertion times can be computed from raw data collected from industry. These standard manual handling and insertion times form the basis for the computation of the manual packaging efficiency expressed as a packaging index. The closer the index is to 1, the more efficient are the packaging operations. Tables of standard times for labelling, scanning barcodes, sealing with adhesive tape, and insertion into Zip-Lock™ bags and cardboard boxes with two, three and four flaps are presented. A simple five-step procedure records the ideal and actual packaging times in a worksheet, from which the packaging efficiency may be computed. The methodology was applied to the packaging of mobile phones, hard disk drives, a desk-jet printer, a notebook computer, a video cassette recorder and a microwave oven. The packaging efficiencies of the three popular mobile phone models were computed to be 81.5 percent, 76 percent and 74.4 percent. By adopting the best packaging features of two competitor models, it was found that the packaging efficiency of one model of mobile phone could be improved by 13.7 percent. Arising from the research, the authors postulated a general manual packaging line consisting of all conceivable manual packaging operations. This generic manual packaging line is significant in a specific line for a specific product may be quickly configured from it. Finally, arising from the experience of the authors in this research, guidelines for the design of efficient packaging lines are proposed.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to study how packaging and packaging design can contribute to competitive advantage for marketing a consumer product. Design/methodology/approach Different influences from actors in the packaging design process are discussed in a conceptual model. A single case study based on five “corporate stories” about packaging development resulting in a new package are presented and analysed. Findings The present study demonstrates influences on the design process of a package from external and internal factors. The outcome of the design process is, to a great extent, dependent on the interaction between the main actors in this process. The study argues for the importance of the interaction with customers for planning and conducting the design. The result of such a process is a package that can trigger customers make a purchase and/or re‐inforce the brand name for a re‐purchase of the product. Practical implications The main implications for management are that packaging is a vital instrument in modern marketing activities for consumer goods, for example in the competitive food industry. The study highlights a few factors that trigger a customer to purchase a product by designing a suitable package for the product. Packaging design makes it possible to introduce new and better solutions for diverse marketing and logistic problems in a supply chain. Originality/value This paper fulfils an identified need for contributions to more research on packaging and marketing strategy.
