Positive Behaviour Support in learning disability services: What stops us using it?

Abstract

People with learning disabilities (LD) are at high risk of marginalisation because of “challenging behaviour”. NICE guidelines 1 and family led organisations endorse Positive Behaviour Support (PBS) as an effective, person centred, intervention. PBS places the service user and their quality of life at its centre. Despite this, PBS is not widely used in many adult community learning disability services, raising the question, what stops us using it? We sought to investigate staffreported barriers in Cambridgeshire Learning Disability Partnership (LDP) to identify what would be needed to promote this approach.
