First record of Leptoglossus occidentalis Heidemann, 1910 (Heteroptera:
Coreidae: Coreinae: Anisoscelini) in Algeria
Leptoglossus occidentalis Heidemann,
1910 is a highly dispersible Nearctic
coreid native to western North America
which has colonized the major part of
Europe since its first appearance in Italy
twenty years ago. Very recently, the
species has been reported especially from
Europe’s southeastern part in the
Mediterranean Region (van der Heyden,
2019d; van der Heyden & Zettel, 2019).
Recently, L. occidentalis has been
reported from Costa Rica in Central
America (van der Heyden, 2019a), from
Argentina (Kun & Masciocchi, 2019),
Chile (Faúndez et al., 2017) and Uruguay
(Faúndez & Silvera, 2019) in South
America as well as from the Golan
Heights (van der Heyden, 2018), Israel
(van der Heyden, 2019c), Lebanon
(Nemer, 2015; Nemer et al., 2019) and
Palestine (Handal & Qumsiyeh, 2019) in
the Middle East. The species occurs in
Iran, too (Hassan Ghahari, personal
communication).
Leptoglossus occidentalis Heidemann,
Heyden, 2019c), Líbano (Nemer, 2015;
Nemer et al., 2019) y Palestina (Handal &
Qumsiyeh, 2019) en Oriente medio. La
especie también se encuentra en Irán
(Hassan Ghahari, com. pers.).

In the Maghreb, L. occidentalis has
been reported from Morocco (Gapon, 2015;
van der Heyden, 2019b) and Tunisia (Ben
Jamâa et al., 2013) so far.
On 8.XII.2019, a photograph of a dead
adult specimen of L. occidentalis was taken
in the area of Algiers at the Mediterranean
coast of Algeria. The photograph was
published in the online database iNaturalist
by a user with the pseudonym rania7
(2019). As L. occidentalis was reported
from the neighbouring countries Morocco
and Tunisia, the presence of the species in
Algeria had been expected.
As L. occidentalis has not been reported
for Algeria in scientific publications yet,
the record reported in this note is the first
one for this country.

Mediterranean stone pine nut is appreciated for its high economic and nutritional value. Starting in 2012, Pinus pinea nut production declined throughout the Mediterranean area. The dry cone syndrome associated with this decline and the introduction of Leptoglossus occidentalis occurred simultaneously. This study aims to evaluate potential reasons behind the decline in pine nut production in Lebanon, considering climatic factors and the invasion of L. occidentalis. Correlation analysis was used to examine a potential relationship between cone yield and the percentage of damaged seeds per cone. Climatic variables were also tested. Two time periods were considered for analysis: before and after 2012. Cone production and the percentage of damaged seeds were negatively correlated (r = 􀀀0.42). From 2012 to 2017, cone production declined by 50% and the percentage of damaged seeds increased on average from 3% in 2012 up to 60% in 2017. Correlations were detected between cone production and the temperature of the hottest three months of the year of harvesting, and between cone production and average temperatures during the year of cone initiation. A conjunction of factors that include L. occidentalis and climatic factors might have affected the pine nut production in Lebanon.
