DIGITIZATION OF FLORISTIC DIVERSITY OF RAINY SHADOW AREA OF TAHSIL
INDAPUR

Abstract
The present study focuses on developing virtual herbarium for botanists and botanically interested non-
specialists. The study includes digitization of flowering plants from study area. The digital library is prepared
which helps users to access the taxonomic information of plants from database.
Introduction
A digital herbarium is a referral system for plants
that maximizes the usefulness of the
collections..The present article represent the
construction of virtual herbarium of rainy shadow
area of tahsil Indapur. The studied area is near a
small village, known as Shetfalgade in Tahsil-
Indapur, Dist- Pune, Maharashtra, which shows
rich angiospermic flora and included under hot
semi-arid region according to Sen12.
Geographically area is situated at the south eastern
part of Pune district and it lies between 18.24175
latitude and 74.70862 longitude. The average
altitude of area is about 527 m above sea leveland
receives maximum rainfall during monsoon season
from June to October. The annual rainfall is about
500 mm.
Material and Method
The study area is visited frequently for observation
and collection of plants during August 2013 to
March 2013. Field images of observed plants were
taken to record the morphological and reproductive
characters . All specimens were idntifed using
different National, State and local floras.
Digitization is done using computer software which
is nothing but a webpage prepared using PHP
language of computer which can run offline. The
software gives access to search botanical
information of studied plants by using keywords
which are provided in search windows. The result
of search is in the form of list of genera with their
thumbnail ( Fig.1). The subsequent click on the
genus name displays a detailed information of plant
with its image ( Fig.2). Taxonomic data of each
species includes all information such as botanical
name, family, morphological and reproductive
characters.

Results and Discussion
The digital herbarium includes 50 angiospermic
plants of 28 families which are tabulated following
Bentham and Hooker’s system of plant
classification (Table 1), out of them 41 are
dicotyledons and 9 are monocotyledons. Life forms
reported were trees, shrubs, herbs and climbers
(Table. 2 and Fig. 3) The rainy season was
dominated by herbs like Cynodon
dactylon(L.)Pers, Commelina diffusa Brum.,
Crotolaria hebecarpa (D.C.)Rudd. The dominant
shrubs in study area are Prosopis julifera (Sw.)Dc.
and Capparis deciduas,Forssk. Frequently
observed trees are Acacia nilotica (L.)Willd. ,
Morinda pubescence J. E. Sm. The area is
characterised by prescense of succulent xerophytic
plants such as Sarcostemma viminale (L.)R.Br.
Caralluma fimbriata Wall.Based on species
contribution, Legumonosae and Poaceae families
were found as dominant families occuring in
vegetion.
