Abstract

Substantial application potential in enterprises is commonly attributed to Robotic Process Automation (RPA). This potential encompasses automation of routine tasks, improvement of data quality, improvement of process stability, or reduction of monotonous tasks. However, our observation from projects with enterprises is that this potential is visible in bigger companies, but not so obvious in small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). SMEs often show a lower readiness to invest time and resources in new technologies and, thus, hesitate to explore new technology applications unless they see a clear business case. This article investigates the application potential of RPA in SMEs by trying to identify typical application scenarios with potentially high benefits that SMEs should focus on. The application potential is primarily addressed from a qualitative perspective, i.e., the aim is not to quantify the potential but to qualify the application fields. The contributions of this article are (1) a structured literature review of the state of RPA use in SMEs, (2) RPA application scenarios visible in the literature and functionality of RPA platforms to support these scenarios, and (3) experiences from implementing three SME-focused use cases with off-the-shelf RPA tools and a concluding evaluation by experts.
... These new technologies shaped the structure of the process automation solutions and became the framework for these tools. The automation software work by explicitly mimicking the activities currently undertaken by today's workforce, such as working with desktop applications, generating reports, sending/receiving emails, using websites, creating documents etc. Generally speaking, automation of business processes involve tasks of working with multiple data sources, such as spreadsheets and PDFs, interpreting and coinciling them, entering data into core systems such as Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) and Customer Relationship Management (CRM) and creating outputs such as reports and notifications (Kukreja and Nervaiya, 2016). ...

Business process automation has been helping companies by eliminating mundane and repetitive tasks. Automation tools have been used in many sectors, providing high full-time employee (FTE) savings and low error rates to the companies. Banks have been utilizing the automation tools for core banking and branch operations. In addition, banks receive hundreds of notice documents from courts, municipalities and third parties; which usually contain private and time-sensitive information about their customers. Automated document processing requires special solutions such as optical character recognition (OCR), natural language processing (NLP) and taxonomy; and modern process automation tools can utilize these solutions to provide end-to-end automation. This paper discusses how the notice documents such as account closure, payment blockage in Turkey can be automated.

More and more IT organizations or IT outsourcing service providers are embracing Information Technology Process Automation (ITPA) as it has transformed the way IT services are delivered to end users. As a result, one of the highly claimed benefits of ITPA is total cost reduction in IT operations. However, ITPA subjects to different interpretations on topics like ITPA criteria, use cases as well as its effects on organizations. Today, there is limited literature and conflicting views on such ITPA topics. The objective of this study is to shed some lights on ITPA criteria, use cases as well as the effects ITPA brings. The effects include the benefits as well as negative effects of ITPA. Moreover, some factors to guide organizations how to adopt and deploy ITPA are also discussed. This study has taken a qualitative approach in which ITPA literature was reviewed and some IT professionals were interviewed. Lastly, limitations of the study, future research and conclusion were also provided.
