Rasa w mieście. Zakorzenione w niemieckim volkizmie rozważania Houstona Stewarta Chamberlaina i Theodora Fritscha
In Nazi Germany a small proportion of influential catholic priests openly professed National Socialist ideology and identified themselves with the purposes of the Nazi movement, treating Adolf Hitler as the national Messiah. They were called ‘brown priests’ (braune Priester). Among them was Karl Adam, considered the most distinguished German Catholic theologist of the time. Adam argued in favour of the validity of racist ideas of the National Socialism and proposed a Nazi interpretation of the Jewish origin of Jesus, supporting it with an anti-Jewish interpretation of dogmas on the immaculate conception of Mary and the virgin birth of Jesus. After the Second World War, Adam never admitted his Nazi theological and pastoral activity and never apologised for it. His actions are presented by the authors of this article. Even today, Adam is, not rarely, considered an eminent religious thinker, a precursor of the Second Vatican Council and the renewal of the Church. In the last two decades, Polish translation of Adam’s two prewar books were published: (Natura katolicyzmu) Das Wesen des Katolizismus and Jezus Chrystus (Jesus Christus). The authors of this paper put forward a thesis that Adam’s collaboration with the National Socialism can no longer be ignored in the assessment of him as a person and of his theological oeuvre.
Der Begriff des Naturzustandes, wie ich ihn hier verwende, unterscheidet sich von demjenigen, wie er gemeinhin im sozialwissenschaftlichen Diskurs verwendet wird. In diesem bezeichnet er den Gegensatz von Geschichte oder Zivilisation, ist demnach mit Begriffen wie “Wildnis”, “Barbarei” und “Zivilisationslosigkeit “oder auch “paradiesische Unschuld”, “Harmonie mit einer objektiven Ordnung der Schöpfung” und dergleichen mehr assoziiert. Häufig taucht er auch im Zusammenhang einer affirmativen, romantisch oder auch faschistoid verklärenden Orientierung an den vermeintlichen oder auch tatsächlichen Werten traditionaler bzw. alteuropäischer Gesellschaften auf. Im Zeitalter der großen Industrie, wo also das göttliche Schöpfertum mitsamt seinen eschatologischen Implikationen auf die Menschen und ihre Maschinen übergeht, scheint die unüberbrückbare Differenz von Natur- und Geschichts- zustand alle Plausibilität für sich zu beanspruchen.
This essay focuses on the relationship between biopolitics and race theory. Starting from Foucault, many authors have considered totalitarian anti-Semitism as a depravity of biologism. This essay would like to challenge this alltoo-simple positivist, materialist, and evolutionist picture of biopolitics in the Third Reich. It examines another “tradition” of racial theories, central to National Socialism, much closer to the revered Western philosophical tradition than Darwinism ever was. This kind of racism presents itself as the authentic heir of that “Metaphysics of Form,” which traces its roots back to classical antiquity, in particular to Plato's work. Through the analysis of some Platonist and racist texts the essay tries to point out the ambivalences that connect some of the assumptions of our philosophical tradition to Nazi totalitarianism.
