TOPIC: Healthy and unhealthy food

● Cooking tools (mixing bowl, knives, cutting board, plates, cutlery etc.)
To provide the preparatory work necessary to facilitate the listening and speaking
skills on topic “Healthy and unhealthy food”.
The lesson consists of three stages that are outlined below:
I Pre stage: Timing: 10 minutes ( GROUP WORK)
1. Brainstorming main issues concerned with the topic; giving different type of
questions( open –ended questions, comparing and contrasting and etc) in
order to activate main discussable points. ( Material 1. )
II While stage: ). Timing : 15 minutes ( TEAM WORK)
1. Matching task “Myplate” Material 2
Teacher show the class the diagram of the 'Myplate' (either on board, or give each
pair / group a print out) and describe that it shows the proportion of your whole
diet that should be made up of the different food groups. Each group gets a print
out of the cards of all the foods. Using the Myplate, they put the foods into the
correct groups. Groups, or individuals from groups, can then move around the
room, assessing how another group arranged their foods and comparing their own
groupings. The teacher checks students understanding the message of balance and
variety by discussing these questions:
Would it be healthy if I just ate foods from the fruit and vegetable section? (No,
that is not a balance). Would it be healthy if I always ate one particular food from
each group, e.g. peas, yogurt, tuna and candy? ( Material 2)
2. Find a word game ( 10 minutes) ( TEAM WORK)
The teacher invites one student from each team and presents a word concerning the
topic (malnutrition, anorexia, obesity, etc) to the group without showing it to the
student whose work is to find the word by definitions of other group members. It
can be a fun way of learning new words. ( Material 3)
3. Watching a video activity ( 15 minutes) ( GROUP WORK)
Teacher gives examples to variety of healthy alternatives to the unhealthy ones.
Then students watch a video and do filling gap exercise on alternatives of junk
food with the healthy ones. ( Material 4)
Post activity
1. “Adapting a healthy daily menu” activity ( 15 minutes) ( INDIVIDUAL
Students are given two tables for filling their daily menu and suggesting a healthy
alternative to their meals. The teacher asks some of the students to read their own
menu. (Material 5)
2. (Real cooking task) 15 minutes ( TEAM WORK)
The teacher prepared various healthy and unhealthy products and asks two
teams make a healthy meal from healthy ingredients. The other half of the
students sing a song and encourage their team members.
Students prepare and cook a simple healthy meal with the class (fruit salad,
vegetable salad, toasts for breakfast). The teacher separates students into
manageable groups. All students will focus on the same dish, but each group will
make their own. (Variation – the class can plan a whole meal, but each group will
focus on one piece of it (i.e. starter, main, sides, dessert) including healthy
ingredients, tools, and budget. (Discuss knife safety. Give each student an
opportunity to do each step of the preparation and cooking.) Each member speaks
about nutrients of the dish they prepared.
