The concept of the atelier plays an essential role within the educational approach of NHL Stenden University of Applied Sciences. In these ateliers, students, together with teachers, researchers and the professional field, design groundbreaking new solutions. But, what exactly is an atelier? Some people talk about a studio. Others talk about a workshop. Still others talk about a living lab, a design factory or an innovation hub. This publication tries to map out the developments in the field of ateliers in NHL Stenden. By comparing different approaches we want to gain more insight into the critical success factors in the development of new studios. The research was coordinated by the Open Innovation Research Group, part of the research group Innovation in Education and Research.

Workshops play an essential role within NHL Stenden. In these workshops, students work together with lecturers, researchers and the professional field on developing innovative solutions. Online Intervision to Enhance Workplace Learning for Student Teachers: Online Professional Developme...

In this paper we will describe an experimental research project aimed at establishing how an online intervision tool may enhance the output of workplace learning by second year student language teachers. This research project was the first of a series of pilot projects carried out within the framework of the lectorates "ICT and workplace learning" and "Open Innovation" of the NHL University of ... [Show full abstract] Applied Sciences in the Netherlands. In this first pilot study designed and built an online intervision tool and we researched how students scored the added value of this online intervision compared to traditional "physical" peer intervision or counselling. For the purpose of our research we asked 28 students who had followed the physical and online intervision trajectory to fill out a questionnaire, the results of which will be described below. Where 100 % of the students are of the opinion that workplace learning and face-to-face intervision are excellent to develop most of their teaching competencies, 68% indicate that they see online peer intervision as a valuable addition to the more traditional face-to-face approach. In qualitative terms students indicated that online intervision is a valuable addition a. since it gives a chance to elaborate on dilemmas outside the classroom and b. since it gives the dilemmas a more permanent status. This document containts the updated research plan of the Open Innovation Research Group of NHL Stenden University of Applied Science. The research group wants to enable innovative students, lecturers, professionals and organisations to design new products, services and other solutions, systematically, and in a design-oriented manner, which both contribute to the aims of the organisation itself, ... [Show full abstract] as well as to the larger social goal of creating a smarter, sustainable and inclusive society. In addition to the perspectives of the individual professional and organisation, the research group works from a societal perspective, with the underlying goal of contributing to the realisation of a ‘smart, sustainable and inclusive region’. This involves complex organisational, socio-cultural, economic, social, political and technological changes. These take place at the interface of different sectors and will depend on the contributions of many different actors. It is expected that collaborative design in a Living Lab environment can help to bring about this kind of complex innovations. The research group employs a design-oriented approach, wherein every professional is considered to be a ‘designer’ designing their own working environment. We could refer to this as ‘Design for non-designers’. The expectation is that a design approach will be capable of bringing about changes in all sectors and should not only be reserved for ‘real’ designers. The Living Lab concept is an important means to facilitate such complex co-creation processes. A Living Lab is a physical and organisational environment in which citizens and businesses collaborate on innovation in a realistic context of use. The question then is how this very diverse group of ‘non-designers’ can effectively organise the collaborative design process. To answer this question, the research group will develop knowledge of multidisciplinary design processes, where different types of actors will work together to solve complex social issues, specifically within a Living Lab environment.

In this research paper the implementation of a new method of peer consultation will be described. Face to face (f2f) peer consultation or " intervision " is traditionally a structural part of Dutch teacher training programmes under the assumption that " intervision " – or the discussion of workplace dilemmas during traineeship – will bridge the gap between workplace learning and formal learning ... [Show full abstract] and that " intervision " will lead to short-term improved professional performance. However, extensive research has demonstrated that this is not the case. What can be demonstrated, however, is that participants develop a shared professional discourse (Joyce & Showers, 2002). Moreover, face-to-face intervision has a number of limitations (Wierda & Barendsen, 2011) which will be discussed in this paper. To meet these drawbacks an online intervision tool was developed and tested with a group of student teachers (n=46) Hence, the overall hypothesis of our research study is that online intervision – in combination with f2f intervision-leads to a stronger development of the shared professional discourse than f2f intervision alone. The online intervision tool was developed as an integral part of the multifunctional educational platform MySchoolsNetwork (Wierda & Barendsen, 2011). We have not been able to demonstrate a development of shared professional discourse as a consequence of f2f intervision alone. When complemented with online intervision the data did show a substantial degree of growth of a shared professional discourse.
